Goede beautyproducten hoeven echt geen aanslag op je bankrekening te zijn. Deze beauty bargain is budgetvriendelijk, gewoon goed en betekent meer geld op de ‘Ooit koop ik een Kelly van Hermès’-spaarrekening.

Nivea lanceert zijn allereerste bodymousse, een luchtige slagroomachtige formule die niet plakt en snel intrekt waardoor je je in enkele minuten kan insmeren en onmiddellijk erna (letterlijk) vlekkeloos je kleren kan aantrekken.
De formules – momenteel is er eentje voor de erg droge huid en één voor de droge huid – beloven de huid bovendien 48 uur diepgaand te hydrateren en bevatten allebei veel glycerine en wat karitéboter. Net als de andere bodylotions van het merk zit er ook paraffinum liquidum in.
Drie jaar geleden sprak ik met iemand van het research & development-team van Nivea en vroeg hem waarom het merk zo vaak paraffinum liquidum gebruikt, een goedkoop ingrediënt dat veel tegenkanting kent omdat het een ondoordringbaar laagje op de huid zou leggen en haar ‘lui’ zou maken waardoor je steeds meer product moet smeren om haar gehydrateerd en zacht te houden.
Volgens de man is dat niet het geval: er blijft wel een laagje op je huid liggen, maar dat is niet ondoordringbaar en zorgt ervoor dat de huid beter vocht kan vasthouden. Je vindt het ingrediënt (of minerale olie) dan ook vaak terug in formules voor de (erg) droge huid omdat het haar snel opnieuw comfortabel doet aanvoelen.
Zelf mijd ik het ingrediënt zoveel mogelijk, maar door mijn allergieën heb ik vaak geen andere optie en moet ik wel een parfumloze hydraterende formule mét paraffinum liquidum gebruiken. Ik volg wel het advies van verschillende dermatologen: zodra mijn huid beter aanvoelt en meer gehydrateerd is, schakel ik over op een paraffinum liquidum-loze formule om eventuele gewenning te voorkomen.
Ondanks de paraffinum liquidum vind ik de formule van de Body Mousse goed klinken. Ik mag haar niet gebruiken omdat er linalool in zit en schakel een collega met een droge huid in om de Body Mousse voor zeer droge huid testen omdat ik de formule ervan net een tikje beter vind dan die voor de droge huid. Naast glycerine en karitéboter zorgen ook amandelolie en Nivea verzorgend serum, een mix van lipiden, oliën en hydraterende bestanddelen, voor hydratatie.
Mijn collega meldt me na enkele dagen dat ze het schuim een aanrader vindt. “Het hydrateert goed, smeert goed uit en voelt aangenaam. Het trekt ook snel in, wat meestal niet het geval is met producten voor de zeer droge huid.” Haar enige bedenking: “Wat is het nut van een schuimpje?” Tja. Omdat dat zacht aanvoelt en eens wat anders is dan een klassieke bodylotion smeren?

Nivea launched its very first body mousse, a light and airy non-sticky formula that quickly penetrates skin so you can put on your clothes immediately after using it.
The formulas – one for very dry skin, one for dry skin – promise to hydrate skin for 48 hours thanks to glycerin and shea butter. They also contain paraffinum liquidum, like the other body lotions of the brand.
Three years ago I asked a member of Nivea’s R&D team why the brand uses paraffinum liquidum so much, a cheap ingredient that has a lot of opponents that claim it forms an impenetrable layer on skin and that it makes skin ‘lazy’, so you have to apply even more product to keep skin hydrated and soft.
According to the man that is not the case: it does leave behind a layer on skin but it is not impenetrable and helps keep moisture in the skin. Which is why you often find the ingredient in skincare formulas for (very) dry skin.
I avoid the ingredient as much as possible but due to my allergies I often have no other choice than to use a fragrance free skincare formula that contains paraffinum liquidum. But I stick to the advice I heard of different dermatologists: once my skin feels better and is well hydrated, I switch to a paraffinum liquidum free formula so my skin does not get used to it.
Still, even with the paraffinum liquidum, I do think the Body Mousse formula sounds good enough to give it a go. I cannot test it as it contains linalool but I find a colleague with dry skin who is willing to try the Body Mousse for very dry skin. Its formula sounds a bit better than the one for dry skin as it also contains almond oil and Nivea nourishing serum, a mix of lipids, oils and hydrating ingredients.
After a couple of days she lets me know that she really likes the Body Mousse. “It hydrates well, is easy to use and feels comfortable. It penetrates quickly, which is not often the case with body products for very dry skin.” Her only remark: “I do not really get why they put the formula in a mousse. What’s the advantage?” I guess because it feels soft and because it is a nice change from a classic bodylotion.
