Beauty bargain: Nivea’s Q10 Plus C Eye Cream

Goede beautyproducten hoeven echt geen aanslag op je bankrekening te zijn. Deze beauty bargain is budgetvriendelijk, gewoon goed en betekent meer geld op de ‘Ooit koop ik een Kelly van Hermès’-spaarrekening.

Q10 Plus C Anti-rimpel + Energy Oogcontourcrème (€ 11,49) van Nivea 

Deze oogcrème bevat de populaire antioxidanten CoQ10 (co-enzyme Q10) en vitamine C, een slimme zet van Nivea. De actieve ingrediënten versterken elkaars anti-oxidantwerking in de huid. Bovendien koos het skincaremerk voor de stabiele vormen ubiquinone en ascorbinezuur die langer hun krachten behouden eens je de tube opent voor gebruik.

CoQ10 zit van nature in de huid, voedt haar en stimuleert de collageenproductie, maar neemt af met het ouder worden. Oplossing: een product smeren waarin het ingrediënt verwerkt zit.

Vitamine C staat erom bekend je huid een mooie glow te geven, maar werkt ook in op huidoneffenheden en rimpeltjes, helpt irritaties en ontstekingen voorkomen, de huid herstellen en de collageenaanmaak stimuleren (en de huid dus te verstevigen).

Door de twee actieve ingrediënten te combineren gelooft Nivea dat de collageenproductie in de huid wordt verhoogd en dat ze (opnieuw) straalt. Zijn belofte voor deze oogcrème: een stralende, uitgeruste blik, zichtbaar verminderde kraaienpootjes en een verstevigde oogcontour.

Veel mensen (ook in de beautyindustrie) geloven niet in oogcrèmes en zeggen dat je even goed je dagcrème rond je ogen kan smeren. Dat kan – zeker als het een parfumloze formule is – maar oogcrèmes bevatten vaak ingrediënten die de specifieke problemen van de oogcontour – donkere kringen, fijne lijntjes, wallen – beloven aan te pakken. Je huid is bovendien het dunst en fragielst rond je oogcontour, waarom zou je haar dan niet wat extra verzorgen?

Mirakels moet je natuurlijk nooit verwachten, maar deze oogcrème voelt fijn aan, smeert erg goed uit en trekt snel in. Je kan er makkelijk concealer over aanbrengen en ik had de indruk dat ik er iets meer uitgeslapen uitzag dan anders (lees: dat mijn donkere kringen iets minder opvallend waren). Glycerine en karitéboter, het tweede en derde ingrediënt, houden de huid goed gevoed.

Het grote nadeel aan een vitamine C-formule is dat de vitamine snel oxideert in contact met zuurstof en dan haar werking verliest. (Als je de tube van deze oogcrème na elk gebruik niet schoon maakt, zie je dat de restjes oranjebruin verkleuren, dat is een teken van oxidatie. Volgens Nivea heeft dat geen invloed op de formule die in de tube zit waar ze stabiel wordt gehouden.) Dat oxidatieproces doet me licht twijfelen of de formule (of om het even welke met vitamine C) na 3 maanden nog even krachtig is als wanneer je de tube voor het eerst opent. Maar in het slechtste geval houd je dan een goed voedende formule over.

This eye cream is packed with the popular antioxidants CoQ10 (co-enzyme Q10) and vitamin C, which is pretty clever of Nivea as these active ingredients enhance each other’s antioxidant power in the skin. The brand chose the stabile forms ubiquinone and ascorbic acid for its formula so it keeps its powers for longer once you open the tube and start using the cream.

CoQ10 is found in your skin, nourishes it and helps with the collagen production but as you get older, the amount of Q10 starts to diminish. The beauty industry’s solution: use a cream packed with the ingredient to replenish skin.

Vitamin C is known to give your skin a healthy, even glow but it also helps with skin tone irregularities and wrinkles, helps boost the collagen production and prevent irritations and inflammation.

By combining these two active ingredients Nivea believes the collagen production can be boosted in skin and that your skin will get its glow back. The brand promises a firmer, more awake eye contour when using the eye cream.

A lot of people – even in the beauty industry – do not believe in eye contour creams, claiming you could just as well use your day cream and save some money. You might do that – especially if you are using a fragrance free cream – but eye creams have been formulated to tackle the eye contour’s problems: dark circles, fine lines, bags. Plus, the skin around your eyes is very thin and fragile so why shouldn’t you give her some extra TLC?

This eye cream has a very comfortable formula that you can easily tap into skin and it is a perfect base for concealer. I was under the impression I looked a bit more awake than before I started using it, meaning the dark circles under my eyes were a bit less prominent. Glycerin and shea butter, the second and third ingredient of the formula, keep skin well hydrated and comfortable.

The big disadvantage of vitamin C formulas is that the vitamin oxidates quickly  and loses its powers. (If you do not clean the end of the tube you will notice the cream turns brownish. Nivea claims this does not affect the formula inside the tube where it can stay stable.) The oxidation of vitamin C makes me doubt that a formula is still as powerful after 3 months of use as when you first opened the jar/tube. If not you are left in this case with a soothing, nourishing eye cream.
