Deze drie zelfbruiners bevatten geen parfum en zorgen voor een ik ben net een weekje naar de zon geweest-tintje.

Sneeuwwitte benen een egaal tintje geven met zelfbruiner zonder dat je eindigt met een kleurtje à la Trump (of strepen) lijkt moeilijker dan het is. Er bestaan tegenwoordig voldoende goede producten die je niet omtoveren tot een Oompa Loompa, in elke prijsklasse. (De bodylotion met een vleugje zelfbruiner van Dove blijft een aanrader wegens budgetproof, hydraterend, makkelijk in gebruik en een mooi kleurtje dat dag na dag opbouwt.)
Maar als je allergisch bent aan parfum, zijn de opties een stuk beperkter. Na twee jaar zoeken geef ik mijn benen (die nooit bruinen) een kleurtje met deze drie producten én een aangepaste handschoen om strepen en oranje handpalmen te vermijden. (En om de illusie staande te houden dat je kleurtje het gevolg is van een weekje op Ibiza en niet omdat je het zelf hebt aangebracht.)
Spraytan Express Instant Zelfbruiner van Curasano (€ 39,95)
Twee in één: deze spray zorgt instant voor een kleurtje, wat handig is omdat je meteen ziet waar je het product al hebt uitgewreven, en na een paar uur doet de DHA in de formule haar werk en krijgt je huid nog meer kleur.
Begin zuinig, zeker als je een bleke huid hebt: één laagje is voldoende voor een natuurlijk resultaat. Hoe meer je sprayt, hoe bruiner je wordt.
(Goed om weten: de formule bevat alcohol denat – een uitdrogende alcoholsoort – als tweede ingrediënt. Je huid goed blijven hydrateren met een bodylotion is dus geen overbodige luxe. Mocht deze spray een bodylotion zijn, smeerde ik haar niet, maar aangezien je selftan niet élke dag gebruikt (tenzij je een geschikte kandidaat zou zijn voor het Britse tv-programma Snog, Marry, Avoid?), zie ik er weinig graten in.
Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster for Face van Clarins (€ 29)
Clevere Clarins: het Franse merk stopte een paar jaar geleden een vloeibare zelfbruinerformule in een klein flesje. Je mengt twee à drie druppeltjes onder je dagcrème (of bodylotion, want er bestaat ook een iets groter flesje voor het lichaam) en bouwt zo geleidelijk aan een natuurlijk kleurtje op.
Handig en tijdbesparend omdat je op die manier hydratatie en een kleurtje combineert. Niet goedkoop, maar je doet erg lang met één flesje. En mocht je zowel op je gezicht als je lichaam zelfbruiner willen gebruiken, dan is het grote flesje voor het lichaam (met dezelfde formule als die voor het gezicht) voordeliger.
Self Tan Mousse van TanOrganic (€ 45, bij Ici Paris XL)
Je houdt van natuurlijke skincare? Dit Ierse merk ontwikkelt biologisch gecertificeerde, veganistische zelfbruiners die de huid ook voeden en hydrateren dankzij ondermeer een stevige dosis aloe vera. Naast een lotion en olie is er ook deze mousse die een intensere kleur belooft dan de lotion.
Uit vrees voor oranje benen (ik vertrouw de term “intens” in het geval van zelfbruiners niet), smeer ik de eerste keer zuinig en zie ik weinig kleurverschil. Een tweede, iets overvloedige laag schuim twee dagen later zorgt voor een mooi, natuurlijk effect.
De handschoen van het merk (€ 13,90) is een aanrader om de mousse (of een andere zelfbruiner) uit te smeren en heeft in tegenstelling tot de doorsnee selftanhandschoen ook een duim waardoor je meer grip krijgt bij het smeren. (Dat vond ik toch.)

These three selftan products are fragrance-free and give you that I have just spent a week in a sunny place-tan.
Creating a streak-free tan that does not resemble Trump’s on legs that can compete with Snow White’s is not as hard as you may think. There are a lot of products nowadays that do a proper job, not making you look like an Oompa Loompa, for every budget. (Dove’s bodylotion with self tan is still a very good one as it is budget proof, easy to use, hydrates and gradually leaves your legs looking all summery.)
But if you are allergic to fragrance, there are not many options left. After a two year search I make my pale legs – they do not tan at all – look a lot more sun kissed with these three products. (And a self tan glove to avoid streaks and orange palms that give away that you helped your tan a bit and did not spend a week on Ibiza.)
Spraytan Express Instant Zelfbruiner by Curasano (39,95 €)
Two in one: this spray gives skin an immediate hint of colour, which is handy as you can see where you have put the product and where you need to add some more, and after a couple of hours the DHA in the formula deepens the effect.
Build up the colour carefully, especially if you are pale: one layer is enough for a natural result. The more you spray, the darker the effect.
(Good to know: the formula contains alcohol denat – a drying type of alcohol – as the second ingredient. Hydrating skin with a nourishing bodylotion is a good idea. If this were a bodylotion that you use every day, I would not use this spray. As I only use this once, maybe twice a week, I do not think it will dry out my skin that much.)

Clever Clarins: the French brand bottled a fluid self tan formula a couple of years ago. You simply add two to three drops to your usual day cream or bodylotion – there is a bigger bottle for the body – and you gradually build up a very natural looking tan.
Handy and time saving as you combine hydration with tan. It does not come cheap but a little goes a long way so the tiny bottle lasts you a long time. Also: the formula of the body self tan booster is the same as the one for the face but it comes in cheaper. If you use self tan on both body and face, it might be more interesting to buy the large bottle.
Self Tan Mousse by TanOrganic (45 €, at Ici Paris XL)
You prefer your skincare natural? This Irish brand develops certified organic and vegan self tanning products that nourish and hydrate skin too. There’s a lotion, an oil and this mousse that promises a more intense tan than the lotion.
Out of fear I’ll end up with orange legs – I never trust the term “intense” when it comes to self tan formulas – I use the mousse sparsely and I end up with legs that look very slightly more tan. A second layer two days later leaves my legs looking tan in a very natural way.
The glove (13,90 €) is a good investment to apply the mousse (or any other self tan formula) in an easy way and it even has a thumb, which – I felt – makes it even easier to apply the product smoothly and evenly.
