Van bouncy formules over capsules tot serums: de nieuwe generatie oogcrèmes speelt hard in op aangename texturen en belooft een uitgeslapen, rimpelloze, stralende blik.

De meningen over het nut van een oogcrème liggen wat uiteen in de beautywereld. Sommige merken ontwikkelen er geen omdat ze vinden dat je even goed je serum of dagcrème op je oogcontour kan smeren en een oogcrème weggegooid geld is. (Als het parfumvrije formules zijn, is de kans op een reactie van de gevoeligere oogcontour kleiner en kan je dat inderdaad doen.)
Andere professionals opperen dan weer dat de huid van je oogcontour een stuk fijner en gevoeliger is dan die van de rest van je gezicht en een aangepaste verzorging dus geen slecht idee is. Zeker niet als die ook nog eens inspeelt op zonespecifieke problemen als donkere kringen, wallen en fijne lijntjes.
Ik neig naar die tweede visie. Hoewel een oogcrème geen wonderen kan verrichten – maar welk skincareproduct kan dat wél? – geloof ik dat ze kan helpen om je oogcontour langer “fris” te houden. Je eerste rimpeltjes duiken het vaakst op aan je ogen omdat de huid er dunner is en dus vatbaarder voor dehydratie en fijne lijntjes. (Denk maar aan je blik na een te korte nacht met iets te veel alcohol.) De huid rond je ogen goed hydrateren is daarom belangrijk. Dat kan inderdaad met je dagcrème, maar een product dat specifiek voor de oogzone werd ontwikkeld is meestal zachter en wat rijker en bevat vaak ingrediënten als cafeïne en gember die donkere kringen of wallen moeten helpen verminderen. Hoewel je op dat vlak zeker geen mirakels moet verwachten – je wallen en donkere kringen gaan niet helemaal verdwijnen – kan het juiste product wel verschil maken. Net als een goede concealer.
De nieuwste generatie skincare voor de oogcontour speelt bovendien hard in op zogenaamde “sensorialiteit”, wat je ook smeergenot kan noemen. Nieuwe texturen maken het nog aangenamer om skincare te gebruiken waardoor consumenten de producten effectief smeren tot het potje/de flacon leeg is. Je kan tegenwoordig ook kiezen uit serums, concentraten en capsules naast de klassieke oogcrème, mocht je de voorkeur geven aan een meer vloeibare, frisser aanvoelende formule. Zoals één van deze producten.
Premier Cru The Eye Cream van Caudalie (€ 56,30, in de apotheek)
Het Franse skincaremerk bundelt in de Premier Cru-lijn al zijn gepatenteerde ingrediënten uit wijnstokken en druiven (resveratrol, viniferine en polyfenolen) en klassieke anti-ageingingrediënten als hyaluronzuur om alle tekenen van huidveroudering aan te pakken.
Het merk onderzoekt samen met Harvard Medical School-professor David Sinclair, “the longevity doctor”, de invloed van de mitochondriën (de batterijtjes in ons lichaam die voor energie zorgen) op onze huidcellen. De Premier Cru-producten beloven die batterijtjes opnieuw op te laden zodat onze huidcellen weer energie krijgen en huidveroudering kunnen aanpakken. De oogcrème met hyaluronzuur en peptiden moet ook wallen en kringen helpen bestrijden. Micropigmenten verdoezelen meteen donkere kringen.
Nero Sublime Precious Pearls Eye Contour van Collistar (€ 48,95 voor 40 parels, bij Ici Paris XL)
De in zwarte pareltjes verpakte formule belooft een heldere, jeugdige oogopslag dankzij een mix van orchidee- en gardenia-extracten, arganolie en gemberextract dat vocht moet afvoeren en ontstekingen moet remmen. Sacha-Inchi- en kokosolie voeden de tere huid. Anders gezegd: minder wallen en een frissere blik. Gevoelige huidjes, opgelet: er zit jammer genoeg parfum in de 15 ingrediënten tellende formule.
Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Eye Cream Rich van Estée Lauder (€ 201,74)
Deze crème is duur. Erg duur, klopt. De reden: het exclusieve Floralixir Dew-extract met een kostbare bloem uit de Himalaya en eentje uit de Braziliaanse bergen die allebei een ijzig koud klimaat kunnen overleven. De idee: die bloemen in skincare stoppen moet de huid helpen zichzelf te vernieuwen en beter te herstellen. Het extract moet ook de collageenproductie boosten. De beloftes: een gladdere, stevigere huid en een versterkte huidbarrière. De rijke crème belooft verder ook minder kraaienpootjes en droogtelijntjes en wallen en donkere kringen aan te pakken. Zuidzeeparels en glansdeeltjes zorgen onmiddellijk voor een meer stralende huid. Hoewel de formule erg rijk aanvoelt, trekt ze snel in en doet ze je huid onmiddellijk zacht en glad aanvoelen.
Blue Serum Eye Eye Revitalizing Concentrate van Chanel (€ 65)
Vorig jaar lanceerde Chanel het Blue Serum, geïnspireerd door mensen die in zogenaamde blue zones leven en uitzonderlijk oud worden met dank aan een gezonde levensstijl en uitmuntende ecosystemen. Het huis stopte drie ingrediënten – groene koffie uit Costa Rica, olijfolie uit Sardinië en Grieks mastiekboomextract – die deze mensen consumeren in een serum dat de huid langer jong moet houden. Nu is er ook een oogconcentraat.
Het hele Blue Serum-verhaal klinkt nogal als een mooi verkoopspraatje, maar de drie ingrediënten worden al langer door de beautywereld gebruikt als antioxidanten en helpen zo huidveroudering bestrijden. Het oogconcentraat bevat bovendien een anti-wallen- en donkere kringencomplex. Ingrediënten als glycerine, squalaan en hyaluronzuur helpen het vochtreservoir van de huid optimaal houden.
Orchidée Impériale Exceptional Complete Care The Eye and Lip Contour Cream van Guerlain (€ 180)
Ook duur, ja. Deze oog- en lipcontourcrème bevat ingrediënten die zowel overdag (wanneer de huid zichzelf moet beschermen tegen vrije radicalen) als ‘s nachts (wanneer ze herstelt en ontgift) goed van pas komen. De formule met orchidee- en jasmijnextract, hyaluronzuur en Centella asiatica belooft naast hydratatie en een meer heldere blik en een gladdere lipcontour ook de huid te ontgiften en tekenen van vermoeidheid én ontsierende gerstekorreltjes aan te pakken. De fijne balsemtextuur trekt snel in en doet de huid onmiddellijk glad aanvoelen.
Elixir Jeunesse Repair + Anti-Pollution Roll-on van Yves Rocher (€ 24,90)
Deze oogcrème moet de huid helpen herstellen, haar beter beschermen tegen pollutie en donkere kringen, wallen en fijne lijntjes verminderen. Het geheim van het Elixir Jeunesse-gamma is extract van duurzaam gekweekte Aphloia. Die plant uit de hoogvlakten van Madagaskar staat bekend om haar herstellende eigenschappen. (Ze kan haar schors vernieuwen.) In je huid helpt ze tegen pollutie beschermen en collageen te herstellen. De kop met drie metalen massagebolletjes is een leuke bonus om je oogcontour te helpen draineren en onmiddellijk te verfrissen. De formule is voor meer dan 90% natuurlijk en vrij van minerale olie, parabenen en siliconen, als je die ingrediënten liever mijdt.
Drops of Youth Youth Bouncy Eye Mask van The Body Shop (€ 20)
Laat je niet misleiden door de naam: je kan deze verende formule met vormgeheugen ook als dagelijkse dag- en/of nachtcrème gebruiken. Komkommerextract kalmeert, stamcellen uit edelweiss, zeevenkel en blauwe distel boosten de celvernieuwing, en adenosine helpt de huid herstellen. Verschillende voedende bestanddelen waaronder glycerine, sojaolie en caprylic triglyceride (een kokosolie- en glycerinederivaat) houden je huid aangenaam zacht. De formule is 100% vegan, mocht je dat belangrijk vinden, maar bevat wél parfum.

Bouncy formulas, capsules, serums… The new eye cream generation feels lovely on skin and promises an eye contour that looks like you have had your 8 hours of sleep.
Not everyone in the world of beauty thinks eye cream is a necessary purchase. Some brands do not develop eye creams as they think it is a waste of money and you can just as well apply your serum or day cream around your eyes. (If they are fragrance free formulas the chances of an allergic reaction of the more sensitive eye area are slightly smaller so you could as well try that.)
Other beauty professionals claim the skin around your eyes is much thinner and more sensitive than on the rest of your face, so an adapted skincare product is a good idea. Especially since it also works on the problems typical for the eye area: dark circles, bags under the eyes and fine lines.
I tend to stick to that second opinion. Even though an eye cream cannot work miracles – then again which skincare product really can? – I do believe it can help to keep your eyes look “fresh” for a longer time. The first wrinkles most often appear around the eyes because the skin is so much thinner there, making it more prone to dehydration and fine lines. (Just think of the way your eye contour looks after a night with too much alcohol and not enough sleep.) Keeping your eye contour well hydrated is key. You could just do that with your day cream but eye creams tend to have softer and a bit richer formulas and contain ingredients like caffeine and ginger that should help in your battle against dark circles and bags under your eyes. Do not expect miracles – they will not disappear completely – but the right eye cream can make a difference. Just like a good concealer can.
The new skincare generation works hard on sensoriality, on the way a cream feels when you apply it and after you have massaged it in. New textures make it even more of a treat to use skincare, which means you will use up your product. Plus, you can choose between serums, concentrates and capsules on top of your regular eye cream if you prefer more fluid, fresher formulas. Like one of these products.
Premier Cru The Eye Cream, Caudalie (56,30 €)
The French skincare brand uses all of its patented ingredients from vines and grapes in its Premier Cru range – resveratrol, viniferine and polyphenols – mixing them with classic anti-ageing ingredients like hyaluronic acid to tackle all signs of skin ageing.
The brand and Harvard Medical School professor David Sinclair, “the longevity doctor”, did extensive research on the influence of mitochondria (the little batteries in our body that provide energy) on skin cells, resulting in Premier Cru to give those tiny batteries a boost zo our skin cells get new energy and can tackle ageing.
The eye cream with peptides and hyaluronic acid has to tackle fine lines, bags under the eye and dark circles. Micro pigments help blur the latter immediately.
Nero Sublime Precious Pearls Eye Contour, Collistar (48,95 € for 40 pearls, at Ici Paris XL)
These little black pearls contain a formula that promises a wide awake and youthful eye contour thanks to a mix of orchid and gardenia extracts, organ oil and ginger extract that is supposed to tackle bags under the eyes and skin inflammation. Sacha Inchi and coconut oil nourish skin. But the formula is not fragrance free, which might be a problem if you have sensitive skin or a fragrance or linalool allergy.
Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Eye Cream Rich, Estée Lauder (201,74 €)
This is a very expensive eye cream, yes. The reason: the exclusive Floralixir Dew extract with a Himalayan and Brazilian flower that can both survive a freezing cold climate. Estée Lauder chose extracts from these flowers to help skin renew and restore itself and to boost the production of collagen in skin. It promises smoother and firmer skin and a stronger skin barrier and to tackle your regular eye contour problems: crows feet, bags and dark circles. South Sea pearls should make skin look more radiant immediately. The formula feels very rich but penetrates quickly, leaving skin feel soft and smooth.
Blue Serum Eye Eye Revitalizing Concentrate, Chanel (65 €)
Last year Chanel launched its Blue Serum, inspired by the people that live in so called blue zones and get exceptionally old thanks to a healthy life style and particular ecosystems. The brand put three ingredients that these people consume – green coffee from Costa Rica, olive oil from Sardinia and Greek mastic tree extract – in a serum that is supposed to keep skin younger for a longer time. And now there is an eye concentrate.
The whole Blue Serum story sounds a bit like a good sales pitch but the three blue zone ingredients work as strong antioxidants, thus helping skin fight ageing. The eye concentrate also contains a complex to beat bags under the eyes and dark circles and ingredients like glycerin, squalane and hyaluronic acid to help keep skin well hydrated.
Orchidée Impériale Exceptional Complete Care The Eye and Lip Contour Cream, Guerlain (180 €)
Another extremely expensive one. This eye and lip contour cream contains ingredients that help skin during the day – when it has to protect itself against free radicals – and during the night – when it repairs itself. The formula with orchid and jasmin extract, hyaluronic acid and Centella asiatica promises hydration, more radiant skin, a skin detox, a smoother lip contour and to tackle signs of fatigue and even milia, you know, those tiny bumps often found under your eyes.
Elixir Jeunesse Repair + Anti-Pollution Roll-on, Yves Rocher (24,90 €)
This eye cream has to help skin repair itself, protect it against pollution and diminish fine lines, dark circles and bags under the eyes. The secret of the Elixir Jeunesse range is sustainable Aphloia extract. That plant from Madagaskar is known for its repairing qualities: it kan renew its bark. In skin it helps protect against pollution and repair collagen. The applicator with three metal massage balls is a nice bonus to help drain and freshen up your eye contour. The more than 90% natural formula is free from mineral oils, parabens and silicones.
Drops of Youth Youth Bouncy Eye Mask, The Body Shop (20 €)
Do not let its name mislead you: you can simply use this bouncy formula as a daily eye cream, too. Cucumber extract soothes and cools, plant stem cells from edelweiss, sea holly and criste marine help boost cell renewal, adenosine helps repair skin. Different nourishing ingredients like soybean oil, glycerin and caprylic glyceride (a coconut oil and glycerine derivate) keep skin feel well-hydrated and soft. The formula is 100% vegan if you find that important but does contain fragrance.
