Sofie Albrecht en ik hebben een boon voor Belgische beauty (en de marshmallows met donkere chocolade en zoute karamel van het Belgische Barù, maar dat geheel terzijde). De Belgische beautywereld is veelzijdig, erg uitgebreid en goed. En ze kan in deze bizarre tijden je steun extra goed gebruiken. Winkelhieren en #ikkoopbelgisch voor je badkamer, dus. Wat? Luxegeurkaarsen met een boodschap, gelanceerd op 6 december 2019.
Wie? De West-Vlaamse Julie Velghe, die een verleden heeft als PR en marketeer in de beautywereld, wil je met haar lifestylemerk aanzetten om even tijd voor jezelf te nemen én even stil te staan bij alles wat je hebt. Omdat dankbaarheid leidt tot gelukkig zijn. Ze woont in San Francisco, maar het merk verzendt alles vanuit België.
Waarom kopen? Als je houdt van lekkere geuren, mooie verpakkingen en puur vakmanschap. De kaarsen worden gegoten uit 100% natuurlijke was (dezelfde als die van Cire Trudon) en zitten in houders uit Limogesporselein of glas. Parfumeur Anaïs Fournial stelde de drie subtiele geuren samen, Confiance, Joie en Sérénité. Ervaren Indische ambachtslui maken de kandelaars, kaarsendovers en kaarsdeksels uit messing.
Waar? Op de webshop en bij Fin du Jour.
Onze aanrader. Voor kerst is er Winter Memories, een limited edition-geurkaars met winterse illustratie. Confiance is de meest winterse geur en doet denken aan een open haardvuur.
Wat? Artisanale geurkaarsen geïnspireerd door de Afrikaanse natuur, vandaar de naam Baobab, een boom die vooral in Afrika voorkomt. Aanvankelijk waren het design en de geuren geïnspireerd door Afrika, maar later werden echte parfumeurs aangetrokken en Europese ambachtslui die de potten maken in mondgeblazen glas. De kaarsen zelf worden met de hand gevuld in het atelier in Brussel.
Wie? De Belgische Valerie Bietlot raakte zo geïnspireerd door de natuur in Tanzania dat ze kaarsen maakte in haar keuken. Toen ze een zakenpartner vond, professionaliseerde en internationaliseerde het merk.
Waarom kopen? De kaarsen zijn niet goedkoop, maar wel echte eye catchers in je interieur. En wanneer ze opgebrand zijn, kan je de glazen potten nog gebruiken als vaas of om je make-upborstels in te bewaren bij voorbeeld.
Waar? Baobab heeft twee eigen winkels in Antwerpen en Brussel en wordt verkocht in interieurwinkels. Op de website vind je de verkooppunten, maar je kan er ook kaarsen kopen.
Onze aanrader. Baobab heeft naast de vaste collecties regelmatig samenwerkingen met creatievelingen die vaak tot verrassend design leiden.
Wat? Acht parfums met een eigenzinnig design, geïnspireerd door de muziek, boeken en sferen waar opper-Billy Ellen van houdt. Meer uitleg over de geuren en het merk vind je in deze post van Sofie.
Wie? Ellen de Veirman besloot iets met haar fascinatie voor parfums te doen en liet enkele parfums ontwikkelen door een parfumeur. Zelf bouwde ze het hele Billy X-universum op.
Waarom kopen? Toegankelijk met een twist, zo zou je Billy X Club kunnen omschrijven.
Waar? Billy X Club vind je uitsluitend online.
Onze aanrader. Sofie heeft het hele gamma getest dankzij de sample set die je online kan bestellen voor € 25.
Wat? Een gloednieuw, Gents parfumhuis dat plezier centraal stelt. Dat merk je aan de toegankelijke geuren, vaak geïnspireerd door fijne herinneringen. Maar ook aan het mooie moderne design dat naadloos in elk type interieur past. Behalve parfums heeft Miglot ook een badlijn, geurkaarsen, reed diffusers, geparfumeerd keramiek, textielsprays en wasverzachter.
Wie? Kristof Lefebre zag in zijn apotheek dat de parfumtesters altijd een lach toverden op de soms erg bedrukte gezichten van zijn klanten. Hij raakte gefascineerd door het effect van geuren en besloot zich om te scholen tot parfumeur.
Waarom kopen? Het gamma is ruim, waardoor iedereen wel iets vindt naar zijn of haar smaak. De goede prijs-kwaliteit verhouding is een andere troef. Je kan online bestellen, maar de winkel in hartje Gent is echt een aanrader. Mooi en huiselijk, met het labo van Kristof in het midden van de winkel. Achteraan is een ruimte waar je workshops kan volgen.
Waar? Miglot Fragrance Lab ligt op het Koophandelsplein 17 in Gent, vlakbij de Veldstraat.
Onze aanrader. De sample set, die je online kan bestellen, geeft een goed idee van het hele gamma. De favoriet van Sofie is Formula 28, een ongewone peperachtige houtgeur. (Tijdens een bezoek aan de winkel raakte ze ook geïntrigeerd door de geurkaarsen, die ze wil herontdekken van zodra ze weer zonder zorgen naar Gent kan.) Ik houd van Formula 06, een kruidige fougère, en Formula 16, een bloemige muskusgeur.

The Belgian beauty world is versatile, extensive and good. And it can really use your support in these bizarre times. What? Luxurious, natural scented candles.
Who? Julie Velghe, who used to work in PR and marketing in the beauty world, created her lifestyle brand hoping it will inspire its customers to take some time for themselves and be grateful for all the good things they have. Because being grateful leads to being happy. Julie lives in San Francisco but Aayali ships everything from Belgium.
Why should I buy it? Because these scented candles are a pure delight. They are 100% natural wax (the same one Cire Trudon uses), come in Limoges porcelain or glass holders and their scents – Confiance, Joie and Sérénité – were created by perfumer Anaïs Fournial. Indian craftsmen make the chandeliers, candle lids and candle extinguisher from messing.
Where? On the webshop and at Fin du Jour.
We recommend. Aayali created Winter Memories, a limited edition scented candle for Christmas with a very wintry illustration. (Confiance is the most wintry scent, it reminds you of a cozy burning fireplace.)
What? Artisanal scented candles, inspired by African nature, hence the name Baobab, a tree that mainly grows in Africa. At the launch of the brand, the design and scents were inspired by Africa. Later on, perfumers were involved into the scent creating process and European artisans make the mouth-blown candle jars. The candles are filled by hand in the atelier in Brussels.
Who? Valerie Bietlot was so inspired by Tanzanian nature that she started making candles in her own kitchen. She found a business partner and turned her DIY candle making into a professional, international brand.
Why should I buy it? These candles are far from cheap but they are true eye catchers in your interior. Once they have burned up, you can upcycle the glass jars and use them as make-up brush holders or vases.
Where? Baobab has two Belgian stores, one in Antwerp, one in Brussels, and is sold in interior shops. You can find its points of sale on the website where you can also buy candles.
We recommend. Baobab does regular collabs with artists that result in surprising designs.
What? Eight fragrances in whimsical bottles, inspired by the music, novels and other things that inspire Chief Billy Ellen. More info on the fragrances and the brand in this blog post Sofie wrote.
Who? Ellen de Veirman decided to turn her fascination with fragrance into her own brand. She let a perfumer create fragrances and built the entire Billy X universe herself.
Why should I buy it? It’s an accessible brand with a twist.
Where? Billy X Club is only sold online.
We recommend. Sofie tested the entire range thanks to the sample set you can order online for 25 €.
What? A brand new fragrance house in Ghent that is all about joy. The accessible fragrances are often inspired by happy memories, the modern design suits any interior style. Miglot not only produces fragrances, you can also buy scented body products, scented candles, reed diffusers, fragranced ceramics, fabric sprays and laundry softener.
Who? Pharmacist Kristof Lefebre discovered that the fragrance testers in his pharmacy always made his clients smile. He became fascinated with the effect of scent and decided to retrain to become a perfumer.
Why should I buy it? The range is large, meaning everyone will find something to suit his/her liking. The products are good value for money to boot. You can order them online but visiting the store is a must. The shop is styled beautifully and Kristof’s lab is the center piece of the store. There is a workshop space in the back, too.
Where? Miglot Fragrance Lab, Koophandelsplein 17 in Ghent, close to the Veldstraat.
We recommend. Its sample set gives you a good idea of what the range is all about. Sofie’s favourite is Formula 28, an unusual peppery wood scent. (During her visit of the store she also got fascinated by the scented candles that she wants to rediscover once she can visit Ghent in a more comfortable way than during this second lockdown.) I like Formula 06, a fougère, and Formula 16, a floral musk.
