Gevoelig aan gewone deo? Misschien moet je eens eentje zonder (of met hypoallergeen) parfum testen. Ik gebruik(te) deze vier exemplaren.
Was een fris deodorantgeurtje kiezen vroeger een leuke bezigheid, sinds ik allergisch blijk aan linalool en parfum, ga ik geurloos door het leven en gebruik ik dus antiperspiranten en deodorants zonder parfum. Dat was even zoeken.
Hoewel er in de apotheek een vrij ruim aanbod is, bevatten die formules soms nog andere bestanddelen waaraan ik ook allergisch ben. Ik vond gelukkig (en bovendien goedkopere) alternatieven bij de drogist en in de supermarkt. Deze deodorant en drie antiperspiranten gebruikte ik de voorbije jaren.
Ter info. Persoonlijk geef ik de voorkeur aan een antiperspirant, geen deodorant. Die tweede verdoezelt zweetgeurtjes, de eerste bevat aluminiumzouten die je zweetklieren tijdelijk verstoppen waardoor je minder/niet zweet en geurtjes dus ook minder vrij spel krijgen.
Nu hebben veel mensen schrik gekregen om nog een antiperspirant te gebruiken door de beweringen van (een deel van de) clean beauty-beweging. Dat je van klassieke antiperspiranten borstkanker krijgt, bij voorbeeld. De huidige wetenschappelijke kennis en het degelijk, betrouwbaar wetenschappelijk onderzoek die we vandaag hebben wijzen erop dat we ons geen zorgen over onze gezondheid hoeven te maken wanneer we cosmetica gebruiken die bij voorbeeld parabenen bevatten.
Wil je toch liever het zekere voor het onzekere nemen, schakel dan gerust over op een “cleane” (een wettelijk nietszeggende, niet-gecontroleerde term) en/of natuurlijke deodorant. Maar weet dat veel essentiële oliën OOK potentiële hormoonverstoorders zijn, net als parabenen. en dat je huid van sodium bicarbonaat, dat vaak in natuurlijke deodoranten zit, geïrriteerd kan raken. En dat een aluinsteen ook zweetklieren tijdelijk blokkeert.
Ray Deodorant in Oolong Tea, € 34 voor een flesje en een refill die goed is voor 2 keer navullen
Dit is een deodorant, geen antiperspirant. De formule verstopt je zweetklieren dus niet tijdelijk waardoor je minder/niet zweet. Toch belooft het Belgische Ray droge oksels: rijstzetmeel moet zweet absorberen. Salvia (salie) moet zelfs overmatig zweten verhinderen.
De vegan formule is vrij van (betwiste) aluminiumzouten en triclosan en ook van alcohol, natrium bicarbonaat, limonene en linalool die de huid kunnen irriteren. (Zo ben ik allergisch aan linalool.)
Het parfum is hypoallergeen. Daarom neem ik het risico om deze deodorant uit te testen. (In theorie bevat hypoallergeen parfum geen allergene bestanddelen en zou je dus geen allergische reacties mogen krijgen wanneer je die bij “gewoon” parfum wél krijgt.)
Ik krijg geen uitslag of irritatie van de deodorant van Ray, maar durf hem toch niet goed een week aan een stuk gebruiken, uit vrees dat ik er toch op ga reageren. Ik wissel daarom af met mijn oude vertrouwde antiperspirant zonder parfum.
Ik vind dit overigens wel een fijne deo: mijn oksels blijven inderdaad grotendeels droog en ik ruik geen vieze geurtjes aan het eind van de dag. Alleen vind ik het Oolong Tea-parfum érg aanwezig. (De geur is gelukkig aangenaam en perfect uniseks.) Maar dat ligt aan mijn neus die, sinds ik ongeparfumeerde cosmetica gebruik, veel gevoeliger is geworden voor geuren. Zo ruik ik het wasmiddel en de wasverzachter in de kleren van joggers die me in het park voorbij lopen.
Eén klein nadeel: op mijn net geschoren oksels brandt de deodorant licht, ook al bevat hij geen alcohol.
Een mooi voordeel: je kan het glazen flesje navullen. Sommige mensen vinden het misschien wat vies om een roldeodorant te blijven gebruiken, ik zie daar zelf geen graten in zolang je het flesje niet deelt met anderen.
Anti-Perspirant Roll-on van Neutral, € 3,99, o.m. bij Kruidvat
Deze rechttoe rechtaan antiperspirant zonder parfum gebruik ik nu een jaar of twee, sinds ik niet meer aan die van Simple geraak. Helemaal wat je van een antiperspirant verwacht: ik merk geen vieze geurtjes op en mijn oksels blijven goed droog.
Ik koop deze roll-on bij Kruidvat, maar vind hem niet op de webshop van de keten. Als je even googelt, kan je deze antiperspirant wel bij online webshops vinden.
Soothing Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Stick van Simple
Ik kocht deze stick voor het eerst vier zomers geleden bij Tesco, op onze vakantie in Kent. Ik vond dit een erg aangename antiperspirant en liet een collega die naar Londen trok nog een paar sticks meebrengen. Ik vond het dan ook erg jammer dat Unilever dit merk in België lanceerde met een erg beperkt aanbod van de gezichtsverzorging en helemaal niets van de lichaamsverzorging. (Simple heeft goede basic skincare voor de droge en/of gevoelige(re) huid aan een goede prijs. Intussen is het merk bij ons helemaal niet meer beschikbaar.)
Dankzij de Brexit lijkt het me ook moeilijk en wat omslachtig om een antiperspirant te laten overkomen uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Ik wil niet het driedubbele van de prijs van een deodorant neertellen aan verzending en douanekosten. Mocht je binnenkort naar het VK reizen: deze is een aanrader en check dan meteen ook de rest van het aanbod.
Dove Sensitive Deodorant van Dove
Dit is niet de stick die ik vier jaar geleden in de supermarkt kocht en erg graag gebruikte, wel de sprayversie. Die koop ik persoonlijk liever niet omdat er butaangassen in zitten die niet erg milieuvriendelijk te noemen zijn. De stick lijkt niet meer te bestaan. (Of toch niet in onze contreien.)
Dove heeft aangename anti-transpiranten die zijn befaamde “1/4 hydraterende crème” bevatten die de huid van de oksel goed gehydrateerd moet houden.

Does a regular deodorant give you a rash? You might want to try a fragrance-free one, or one with hypoallergenic fragrance. I have tried and tested these four.
Picking a new fresh deodorant scent used to be a fun activity in the supermarket. But ever since the linalool and fragrance family 1 allergies diagnosis, I have only used fragrance-free cosmetics. So I had to go and look for fragrance-free deodorants and anti-perspirants. Although the pharmacy has a good range of those, they often still contain other ingredients I am allergic to. Luckily for me, I have found (cheaper) options at the supermarket and drug store.
Good to know. I personally prefer using an anti-perspirant instead of a deodorant. The latter simply masks body odour, the former contains aluminium salts that temporarily block sweat glands so you do not sweat (as much) and the bacteria in your armpits do not get a chance to create nasty smells.
Now, a lot of people are afraid to use a classic anti-perspirant due to claims that (a part of) the clean beauty movement makes. That classic anti-perspirants lead to breast cancer for instance. I have talked to many professionals about this topic and they assure me that we have nothing to worry about, based on the scientific knowledge and the decent scientific research we have today.
If you like to play it safe, you can of course switch to a “clean” (that word has no legal background and can mean anything) and/or natural deodorant. Just know that a lot of essential oils are potential hormone disturbers, too, just like parabens. And that your skin can get irritated by sodium bicarbonate, which is often used in natural deodorants. And that an alum stone also temporarily blocks sweat glands, like a traditional anti-perspirant does.
Ray Deodorant in Oolong Tea, 34 € for a bottle and two refills
This is a deodorant, not an anti-perspirant. Its formula does not temporarily block your sweat glands. Still, Ray promises dry arm pits: rice starch has to absorb sweat and salvia (sage) has to prevent excessive sweating.
The vegan formula is free from (disputed ingredients) aluminium salts and triclosan and from alcohol, natrium bicarbonate, limonene and linalool, ingredients that can irritate skin. (I am allergic to linalool.) Its fragrance is hypoallergenic. Which is why I take the risk to try this deodorant.
(In theory, a fragrance that is hypoallergenic does not contain any known allergens, which means you should not react to it. But it is not a legally controlled term. So a brand could call a product hypoallergenic, even when it is not.)
Ray’s deodorant does not give me a rash or irritate my skin but I am still a bit hesitant to use it a whole week at a time, just in case I do react to its fragrance. So I alternate between it and my regular anti-perspirant.
I do like this deodorant though. My armpits stay dry and I do not smell nasty at the end of the day. My only problem with the fragrance is that it is a bit too much for me. (The Oolong Tea scent is nice though. And perfectly unisex.) My nose has become more sensitive to scent, ever since I went fragrance-free. When a jogger passes me in the park, I can smell the laundry detergent in his/her clothes for instance.
One small disadvantage: the deodorant burns slightly on my freshly shaved armpits, even though it is free from alcohol.
I like the fact that you can refill the glass bottle. Some people might not like the idea of refilling a roll-on deodorant but I do not see the problem as long as you do not share the bottle with your partner.
Neutral’s Anti-Perspirant Roll-on, 4,49 €, at Etos among other stores
I switched to this straightforward fragrance-free anti-perspirant about two years ago, when I could no longer find the Dove one or get the Simple one in Belgium. It does what it says on the tin: I do not smell any body odour when I wear this one and it keeps me dry.
I buy it at Kruidvat but cannot find it on its webshop. But Etos sells it, too.
Simple’s Soothing Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Stick
I bought this stick four summers ago at Tesco, when we were on holiday in Kent. I really liked this anti-perspirant and had a colleague bring me a stash when she went to London. I was disappointed Unilever Belgium decided to only launch some to the brand’s skincare products in Belgium but not the body care. (I think the brand lasted about a year here before it disappeared again. Which is a pity because it has good basic but effective products for dry and/or sensitive skin.)
Thanks to the Brexit it seems pretty difficult (and expensive) to have an anti-perspirant shipped from the UK to Belgium. I don’t want to pay more than double of its price to customs and shipping costs. But if, one day, you travel to the UK, make sure to check out this brand.
Dove’s Sensitive Deodorant
This is the spray version of the anti-perspirant stick I used to buy four years ago and that I really liked using. I personally avoid buying sprays that contain butane and other propellants that aren’t exactly environment-friendly. (This one does contain them.)
Unfortunately for me, the stick seems to be discontinued. (Or it is in Belgium.) But this spray seems to be pretty hard to buy, too. Which is a pity as I do like Dove’s anti-perspirants. I think they are good quality and the brand’s “1/4 hydrating cream” is a nice extra to keep the skin of your armpits hydrated.
