An iconic serum, AHAs that my skin actually tolerates and likes and comfy colour for my lips: these are the beauty products I loved using this month.

Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex, 114,50 € for 50 ml

Years ago I had a bottle of ANR on my desk at the magazine I was working for to counter the drying effect the airco had on my skin. After lunch, I would apply some of the serum on top of my make-up. I put the latest version of the iconic serum in my to test box quite a while ago and finally opened the brown bottle at the end of June. (I am the kind of beauty editor that does not test 20 skincare products at a time: been there, done that, got the contact allergies thank you very much. If I test a product and my skin likes it, I keep on using it until it is empty.)

Now, ANR – does anyone EVER call this by its complete name? – has an iconic status in the beauty world and I get why. It simply is a very nice, soothing, hydrating anti-ageing serum that is suited for any skin type. I love its silky texture: it is quickly absorbed by my skin and does not feel sticky. The formula leaves my skin (I think) looking plump and glowy. In time it should also tighten pores but visible pores aren’t a skin problem I have (yet). I also love its soothing scent: it reminds me of prescription products a pharmacist makes. (The product is fragrance-free by the way but it has a scent.)

If you would like to try the serum but aren’t sure whether it will work for your skin: you can buy the 20ml at 45,55€ as a sort of tester to see whether you like it or not. A big bottle is quite an investment for a lot of people.

Jaren geleden had ik een flesje ANR op mijn bureau op de redactie staan om het uitdrogende effect van de airco na de middag te bestrijden. De nieuwe versie van het iconische ANR-serum ligt al een hele tijd in mijn testdoos op me te wachten, maar eind juni opende ik het bruine flesje eindelijk. (Ik ben van het beautyjournalisttype dat geen twintig skincareproducten tegelijkertijd test: been there, done that, ik heb er contactallergieën aan over gehouden. Als ik een product test dat me bevalt, gebruik ik het tot het op is.)

ANR heeft een iconisch statuut en ik begrijp waarom. Het is een erg fijn hydraterend anti-ageingserum dat geschikt is voor elk huidtype. Ik houd van de textuur ervan: die dringt snel in en plakt niet. De formule zorgt (vind ik) bovendien voor een mooie gloed. Op termijn zouden poriën ook minder moeten gaan opvallen, maar verwijde poriën zijn geen probleem op mijn huid. Ik vind ook de geur aangenaam en geruststellend: die doet me denken aan producten die apothekers zelf maken. De formule is ongeparfumeerd trouwens.

Ben je niet helemaal zeker of het serum wat voor je huid is, maar wil je het wel proberen? ANR komt ook in een 20 ml-formaat aan € 45,55 dat je misschien eerst kan gebruiken om te zien of het serum je ligt. Want het blijft een vrij stevige investering.

Tata Harper’s Radiance Mask for Sensitized Skin, 66 €, at Labelchic in Brussels (and on its webshop).

This is a nice, gentle peeling mask that is free from essential oils or fragrance, which makes it suited for a lot of sensitive/sensitized/reactive skins. (Not that every sensitive skin reacts to those ingredients but there is always a chance it will as they are the most popular allergens.) The AHAs dissolve dead skin cells, prebiotics feed the microbiome and a hydrating complex promises long-lasting hydration.

My skin isn’t the biggest fan of AHAs but it loves this mask. After using it, my skin feels soft and smooth and does not turn red. Lactic and phytic acid are gentle acids. The latter does not exfoliate that much but works as a great antioxidant. Lactic acid not only exfoliates but hydrates, too.

I like combining this mask with a hydrating/calming mask like La Roche-Posay’s Tolériane sheet mask or Kiehl’s avocado mask.

Dit is een aangenaam peelend masker zonder essentiële oliën of parfum, wat het ook geschikt maakt voor veel gevoelige/reactieve huidjes. (Niet dat elke gevoelige huid gevoelig is aan die bestanddelen, maar de kans bestaat.) De AHA-zuren lossen dode huidcellen op, prebiotica voeden het microbioom en een hydraterend complex belooft langdurige hydratatie.

Mijn huid is niet de grootste fan van AHA-zuren, maar vindt dit masker wél aangenaam. Ze voelt na elk gebruik glad en zacht aan en slaat niet rood uit. Melkzuur en fytinezuur zijn dan ook zachte AHA’s. Die laatste zou niet heel hard exfoliëren, maar wel een erg goede antioxidant zijn. Melkzuur exfolieert niet alleen, maar hydrateert ook.

Ik gebruik het masker graag in combinatie met een hydraterend en/of kalmerend masker zoals het nieuwe Tolériane-sheetmask van La Roche-Posay of het avocadomasker van Kiehl’s.

Kiko Milano’s Jelly Stylo in 511 Fuchsia, 7,49 €

We spent four days in Thorn, the White Town in Dutch Limburg, at the beginning of July. I try to travel as light as possible, especially for short trips, and stick to basic make-up: concealer, tinted day cream, mascara and blush. (Basic for a beauty editor, I should probably write.) To add some colour to my face I added this fuchsia lipstick to my toilet bag.

I generally prefer matte lipsticks but this Jelly Stylo turns out to be a very nice discovery and a musthave if you like a glossy lip but do not like the stickiness or short-lastingness of a lot of lip glosses. The Jelly Stylo feels comfortable and hydrating on lips, dry lips get away with it (while a matte lipstick only accentuates their dryness) and its formula stays put pretty good for a glossy finish lipstick. (I have to reapply after a meal though.) One layer of lipstick has a good colour pay-off but the more layers you add, the intenser the colour and the glossiness.

Tip: the brand’s webshop offers a 30% discount on this lipstick right now. (I just hope that does not mean it will be discontinued.)

Begin deze maand waren we vier dagen op vakantie in Thorn, het Witte Stadje in Nederlands Limburg. Ik reis altijd zo licht mogelijk, zeker voor korte trips, en houd het bij heel basic make-up: concealer, getinte dagcrème, mascara en blush. (Basic voor een beautyjournaliste, moet ik waarschijnlijk schrijven.) En voor een vleugje kleur en peps stopte ik deze fuchsia lippenstift in mijn toilettas.

Ik geef normaal gezien de voorkeur aan matte lippenstiften, maar ik vind deze Jelly Stylo een aangename ontdekking en een absolute aanrader voor wie van een glossy lip houdt, maar niet van het plakkerige gevoel en de korte houdbaarheid van veel lipglossjes. De Jelly Stylo voelt comfortabel op de lippen, je kan hem ook dragen als je lippen wat droger zijn (en matte lipstick vaak droge velletjes extra in de kijker zet) en de formule blijft vrij goed zitten voor een glanzende lippenstift. (Even bijwerken na een maaltijd is bij mij wel een must.) Eén laagje zorgt ook voor best veel kleur. Hoe meer laagjes, hoe intenser het kleur- en glanseffect natuurlijk.
