The worldwide pandemic not only messed up our daily lives, it also messed up the launch dates of new beauty products. In the past two years, there have been remarkably little lip make-up launches but the interest in caring lip balms and lip oils increased, products that keep lips smooth, soft and well hydrated while giving them a hint of colour. They fit in nicely with the quick, natural make-up look that seems to have banished over contoured Instagram make-up looks. (Even Huda Kattan keeps it more natural nowadays.)
The new lip gloss generation launched in recent months also fits in with this trend. It likes to combine care with colour and shine, without a sticky feeling. Plus, these glosses are a worthy alternative for fans of Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes, the legendary lip gloss that was re-launched in the US last year.
Personally, I am not the biggest lipgloss fan and that’s quite an understatement. But I do see its advantages: dry lips can still wear gloss and seem (more) hydrated while (matte) lipstick only accentuates their dryness. Gloss makes very thin lips look bigger. And if you think lipstick looks too harsh on you, lip gloss is a good alternative if you still want some colour on your lips.
I like to wear lip gloss when I’m wearing a very heavy smokey eye or a lot of glitter on my eyes (and I think lipstick would be a bit too much). Or when I simply want a bit of colour and some shine on my lips to finish off a natural, glowy make-up look.
These new glosses promise to add some sparkle to your life.
Maybelline New York’s Lifter Gloss in 008 Stone, 9,99 €, at Di and Kruidvat
This one seems to be a bit of a social media hype. Its formula contains hyaluronic acid to make lips look full(er). The big wand makes it easy to give your lower/upper lip colour in one go but might be a bit too big if you have very thin lips. There are five colours to choose from, with or without glitter. You do have to like its very sweet caramel scent. (I never liked Maybelline’s lipstick and lip gloss scents but I do like their textures and colours.)
L’Oréal Paris’ Brilliant Signature Plump Gloss in 408 I Accentuate, 12,99 €, at Di and Kruidvat
This formula promises to nourish lips and have a plumping effect thanks to hyaluronic acid and collagen and comes in 5 colours. Peppermint oil gives it its minty scent and tingling sensation. I personally do not like tingling lip products as they can irritate or dry out your lips but that is a very personal issue.
Pat McGrath Labs’ Lust: Gloss Lip Gloss in Flesh Fantasy, 30,90 €, at Ici Paris XL
Granted, this lip gloss deluxe is not new new but it is pretty new in our country. As it is fragrance-free, I decided to try it. (It contains ethyl vanillin that gives it a vanilla scent). This gloss feels like a lip balm and the colour Flesh Fantasy is the ideal Brigitte Bardot nude for my complexion and lip colour. (I think it will suit a lot of different skin tones.) Its formula stays put for a pretty long time for a lip gloss and does not feel sticky. I would highly recommend if you don’t actually like lip gloss but still want to try one.
Flesh Fantasy is currently out of stock but there are 17 other pretty colours to choose from.
Shiseido’s Shimmer GelGloss in 04 Bara Pink, 25 €
Shiseido launched this gloss that comes in 10 colours last year. (Some have an extra glittery finish.) The formula with shea butter feels like a rich, comforting lip balm and is free from fragrance or aroma. (Just like the brand’s other make-up products.) It promises to keep lips nourished and supple and has a very glossy look but does not feel sticky. The pink colour is very transparant. So if you like a bit more colour, you might want to start by filling in your lips with some lip pencil before putting this one over it. The tube might not be the easiest way to apply the product/get it on your lips, I prefer a traditional lip gloss wand.
Millie by Florence Mills’ Get Glossed Lip Gloss in Mellow Mills, 14,90 €, at Ici Paris XL
This is a perfect product for the target group of the cosmetics brand of Millie Bobby Brown, whom you probably know as Eleven from Stranger Things. Gen Z is concerned about the environment and gravitates towards “clean” and vegan products, preferably in cute packaging. (Check out the whale-shaped packaging of the tinted lip balm.) However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use this lip gloss if, like me, you’re a bit older.
I like that Mills decided to not add any fragrance or aroma to her gloss. (Her (tinted) lip oil is also fragrance-free btw. Her tinted lip balm, however, is not.) That not only means I could test it but also that teens with a fragrance allergy can use this lip gloss. (Most products targeted at teens seem to smell sickly sweet.)
Its formula with vitamin E, castor oil and shea butter promises to care for lips and feels like a nice lip balm. It does not stay put that long: I had to reapply after two hours. The tint Mellow Mills is a very soft pink and does not give my lips that much colour. There are two nudes and two reddish hues to choose from.
Ilia’s Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil in Tahiti, 30 €, at Bella Mi Beauty in Ghent among other stores
Great if you like your make-up formulas to be “natural”. This formula with hyaluronic acid (yes, that’s one very popular ingredient in lip glosses right now) and botanical extracts helps keep lips hydrated and promises a glossy hint of colour on the lips. Don’t let the name mislead you: the texture is much more reminiscent of a classic lip gloss than it is of a lip oil but the formula contains sun flower seed and Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil.
This lip oil is free from added fragrance. However, it does contain essential oils from citrus fruits and limonene, which might lead to an allergic reaction if you are allergic from fragrance. Which is why I decided not to test it.

The Body Shop’s Vinyl Lip Gloss, 9 €
This limited edition comes in four bright colours to give your self-confidence a boost, hence their empowering names, too. The vegan, non-sticky formula promises 12 hours of hydration, vitamine E and shea butter care for lips.
Sisley’s Le Phyto-Gloss, 42 €
Sisley launched this care meets shine lipgloss last year. Its Hydrobooster complex with hyaluronic acid and konjac glucomannan promises full and smooth lips but the formula also contains shea butter, vitamin E and macadamia nut oil to care for lips. It is available in 10 colours.
essence’s Extreme Shine Volume Lip Gloss, 1,99 €, at Kruidvat
I don’t think you can find a lot of better priced lip glosses than this one. It comes in 15 colours and promises a wetlook effect for fuller looking lips.
NYX Professional Make-Up’s This is Milky Gloss, 8,40 €, at Di
8 milky hues (no idea what the brand exactly means by that), a sweet scent and a nourishing formula that promises 12 hours of hydration.

Ben jij klaar voor een lipglossrevival? De nieuwe generatie glossjes combineert transparante, glanzende kleur met verzorgende bestanddelen. En – grote bonus – een losgewaaide haarlok blijft er niet langer in plakken.
De wereldwijde pandemie gooide niet alleen ons dagelijkse leven overhoop, maar ook de planning met nieuwe lanceringen van beautymerken. Er kwam de voorbije twee jaar opvallend weinig nieuwe lipmake-up bij, wél steeg de interesse in verzorgende lippenbalsems en lipolie, al dan niet met een tintje, die lippen soepel, zacht en zacht getint houden. Die passen mooi binnen de snelle, natuurlijke make-uplook die de overgecontourde Instagramlooks lijkt te verdrijven. (Zelfs Huda Kattan houdt het tegenwoordig natuurlijker.)
Binnen die trend passen ook de lipglossjes nieuwe generatie die de voorbije maanden werden gelanceerd. Die combineren graag verzorging met kleur en glans, maar zonder plakkerig gevoel. En zijn een waardig alternatief voor de fans van Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes, de legendarische lipgloss in een knijptube die vorig jaar in de VS werd geherlanceerd met twee nieuwe finishes.
Zelf ben ik geen grote fan van lipgloss, maar ik zie er wel het voordeel van in: droge lippen komen perfect weg met een laagje gekleurde glans en lijken/worden instant gehydrateerd, terwijl een (matte) lipstick droge velletjes net in de kijker zet. Heel dunne lippen lijken instant wat voller door gloss. En oogt lipstick te hard op sommige mensen, dan is lipgloss een waardig alternatief voor wie toch wat kleur op haar/zijn/hun mond wil.
Zelf draag ik lipgloss graag in combinatie met een zware smokey eye of glitterogen (wanneer lippenstift too much zou zijn), of wanneer ik een vleugje kleur en wat glans wil om een natuurlijke make-uplook helemaal af te maken.
Deze nieuwe lipglossjes beloven alvast wat meer glans aan je (dagelijkse) leven te geven.
Lifter Gloss in 008 Stone van Maybelline New York, € 9,99, bij Di en Kruidvat
Een hype op sociale media. De formule bevat hyaluronzuur om lippen vol(ler) te doen ogen. Dankzij de grote applicator maak je in één haal je onder/bovenlip op, maar kan misschien wat moeilijker werken zijn als je erg fijne lippen hebt. Kiezen kan uit vijf kleurtjes, met glitterdeeltjes of zonder. Je moet wel houden van het erg zoete karamelgeurtje. (Ik heb nooit wat gehad met de geuren van de lippenstiften en lipglossjes van Maybelline, maar vind hun texturen en kleuren doorsnee heel aangenaam.)
Brilliant Signature Plump Gloss in 408 I Accentuate van L’Oréal Paris, € 12,99, bij Di en Kruidvat
Deze formule belooft verzorging en een plumping effect dankzij hyaluronzuur en collageen en komt in vijf kleuren. Pepermuntolie zorgt voor een dito geurtje en tintelend effect. Ik houd niet van dat laatste en tintelende producten kunnen eventueel je lippen irriteren of uitdrogen, maar dat hangt van persoon tot persoon af.
Lust: Gloss Lip Gloss in Flesh Fantasy van Pat McGrath Labs, € 30,90, bij Ici Paris XL
Niet nieuw nieuw, wel recent beschikbaar in ons land, deze lipgloss van Dame Pat McGrath. Vrij van parfum, dus testte ik hem uit. (Hij bevat wél ethyl vanillin dat voor een vanillegeurtje zorgt.) Deze gloss voelt meer aan als een rijke lippenbalsem. De kleur Flesh Fantasy is voor mijn huids- en lippenkleur een ideale Brigitte Bardot-nude en past volgens mij bij ontzettende veel huidskleuren. De formule blijft voor een gloss lang zitten en plakt niet. Een aanrader voor wie eigenlijk niet van lipgloss houdt.
Deze tint is (tijdelijk) uitverkocht, maar er zijn nog 17 andere kleuren om uit te kiezen.
Shimmer GelGloss in 04 Bara Pink van Shiseido, € 25.
Shiseido kwam vorig jaar met deze gloss in tien kleuren, al dan niet met extra glitterdeeltjes. De formule met karitéboter voelt aangenaam op de lippen en is, net als de rest van de make-up van het Japanse merk, vrij van parfum en aroma. Ze moet lippen gevoed en soepel houden en geeft véél glans, maar plakt niet. Deze gloss voelt eerder als een dikke, voedende lippenbalsem. Deze tint is héél transparant. Wil je meer kleur, zou ik eerst lippotlood aanbrengen. De knijptube is niet de meest praktische om gloss aan te brengen, ik werk liever met de gebruikelijke lipglossapplicator.
Get Glossed Lip Gloss in Mellow Mills van Millie by Florence Mills, € 14,90, bij Ici Paris XL
Een perfect product voor de doelgroep van het cosmeticamerk van Millie Bobby Brown, je waarschijnlijk beter bekend als Eleven uit Stranger Things. Gen Z is begaan met het milieu en grijpt naar “cleane” en vegan producten, liefst in schattige verpakkingen. (Check de verpakking met walvisje van de getinte lippenbalsem.) Maar dat betekent niet dat je deze lipgloss ook niet kan gebruiken als je, zoals ik, wat ouder bent.
Heel fijn dat Mills besloot geen parfum of aroma aan haar gloss toe te voegen. (Ook niet aan haar (getinte) lipolie trouwens, wel aan haar getinte lippenbalsem.) Want dan kon ik hem uitproberen en kunnen tieners met een parfumallergie ook eens lipgloss gebruiken.
De formule met vitamine E, ricinusolie en karitéboter belooft te verzorgen en voelt inderdaad aan als een fijne lippenbalsem. Erg lang blijft ze wel niet zitten: na twee uur moet ik bijwerken. De tint Mellow Mills is een érg zacht roze en geeft dus niet superveel kleur. Er zijn nog twee nudetinten en twee rode.
Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil in Tahiti van Ilia, € 30, o.m. bij Bella Mi Beauty in Gent
Voor fans van “natuurlijke” formules. De formule met hyaluronzuur (jawel) en plantenextracten helpt lippen gehydrateerd houden en belooft een glanzend waasje kleur op de lippen. Laat je niet misleiden door de naam: de textuur is veel meer die van een lipgloss dan die van een lipolie, maar bevat wel zonnebloem- en donzige moerasbloemzaadolie.
Er werd geen parfum toegevoegd aan deze lipolie, maar essentiële oliën van citrusvruchten en limonene kunnen eventueel tot een reactie leiden als je gevoelig/allergisch bent aan parfum. Vandaar dat ik het niet aandurf deze uit te testen.

Vinyl Lip Gloss van The Body Shop, € 9
Deze limited edition komt in vier fellere kleuren die je zelfvertrouwen moeten boosten, ook al door hun empowering namen. De vegan formule belooft 12 uur hydratatie, maar voedt ook dankzij vitamine E en karitéboter. Dat alles zonder plakkerig gevoel.
Le Phyto-Gloss van Sisley, € 42
Sisley lanceerde vorig jaar deze lipgloss die glans met verzorging combineert. Het ‘Hydrobooster’-complex met hyaluronzuur en konjacglucomannaan moet voor volle en gladde lippen zorgen, maar de formule bevat ook karitéboter, vitamine E en macadamiaolie. Beschikbaar in 10 kleuren.
Extreme Shine Volume Lip Gloss van essence, € 1,99, bij Kruidvat
Voordeliger geprijsd ga je moeilijk vinden. 15 kleuren en wetlook-finish voor voller ogende lippen.
