You have no idea what to buy as a Secret Santa? One of these small beauty gifts is sure to be well received.

The US and UK know them as stocking fillers, small gifts that that Santa can easily drop into the Christmas socks hanging ready for him on the night of Christmas Eve. (Just like Belgian and Dutch children put an empty shoe ready for Sinterklaas on 5 December.)
We might not do stocking fillers in Belgium but they are perfect little gifts to surprise a colleague at work or if you want to add a small extra to the Christmas gift you bought your mother (in law).
These three gifts cost 15 € or less and are sure to be used by their receiver.
The Body Shop’s Comfort & Cheer Body Butter Trio, 15 €
Instant throwback to your teens when you probably owned a Body Shop Body Butter or two or three. Back then it might have been more about the fruity smells – I think the brand really stepped up its game and that the current fragrances are much more sophisticated and natural smelling, the mango really smells like mango, not like synthetic mango – right now we get that the creamy formula with fair-trade shea butter is simply a treat for dry skin.
These 50 ml tins are easy to take with you on holiday, to discover new fragrances or to use a different scent every morning without you having to invest in three big jars. (Once they are empty, I think you could upcycle them and use them to make your own travel-size body cream out of your large tin.)
L’Occitane’s Shea Limited Edition Hand Cream, 8 €.
L’Occitane’s fair-trade shea butter hand creams are cult products and with reason. Their formula easily penetrates skin, so your hands don’t feel slippery, their high amount of shea butter, glycerin and plant-based oils nourish skin and they smell nice. (Which is unfortunate if, like me, you are allergic to fragrances. The brand has no fragrance-free hand cream I know of.)
The small tubes are the perfect size to put in your hand bag and nowadays are made of 95% recycled aluminium, thus reducing their environmental impact. This year French illustrator Tristan Bonnemain got to decorate the hand cream and other products from the Christmas collection.
Savonneries Bruxelloises’ Small Box Ginger & Lime, 15 €.
100% Belgian, 100% handmade and they smell fantastic. What’s not to like? Plus, these soap bars also contain shea butter, almond oil and glycerin to prevent the drying effect soap can have on skin.
These are a great gift in these frequent hand washing times but I also like to put small soap bars between the folded clothes in my wardrobe to make them smell nice.
You can find the Brussels brand at some niche beauty shops and the brand has its own webshop but it also has a pop-up at the moment in the Galerie de la Reine in Brussels.
Je bent de Secret Santa van je collega en hebt geen idee wat kopen? Met één van deze kleine beautycadeautjes zit je altijd goed.
In de VS en het VK staan ze bekend als stocking fillers, kleine cadeautjes, doorsnee ook aan een klein prijsje, die de kerstman makkelijk in de kerstsokken kan stoppen die in de nacht van 24 december voor hem klaar hangen aan de schouw. (Net zoals kinderen bij ons op 5 december hun schoen zetten zodat de Sint die kan vullen.)
Wij mogen dan niet aan stocking fillers doen, in onze contreien zijn zo’n cadeautjes ideaal als je op het kerstfeest van het werk een collega moet verrassen, of nog een klein extraatje aan je (schoon)moeder wil schenken bovenop je ‘grote’ kerstcadeau.
Hierbij alvast drie ideetjes van onder de of net € 15, waaraan de krijger ook écht wat heeft.
Comfort & Cheer Body Butter Trio van The Body Shop, € 15
Wie heeft er als tiener géén Body Butter van The Body Shop gehad? Instant jeugdsentiment dus, maar de romige lichaamsboter is ook simpelweg een fijn product met fairtrade karitéboter dat de (droge) huid goed gevoed belooft te houden. En ik vind dat The Body Shop erg fijne geuren in het gamma heeft zitten: de mango ruikt écht naar mango, niet naar synthetische mango zoals zo vaak het geval is.
De potjes van 50 ml zijn handig om mee te nemen op vakantie, om de geuren te leren kennen of om elke dag van geur te veranderen zonder dat je fullsize producten moet kopen. (Ze lijken me ook handig om na gebruik te upcyclen. Goed reinigen en je kan ze als travel-size gebruiken en vullen met je bodycrème uit een grote pot.)
Shea Limited Edition Handcrème van L’Occitane, € 8.
De handcrèmes met fairtrade karitéboter van L’Occitane zijn terechte cultproducten. Ze trekken snel in, laten geen glibberig laagje achter, het hoge percentage karitéboter, glycerine en plantaardige oliën in hun formule voeden de (droge) huid goed en ze ruiken lekker. (Jammer genoeg bestaan er geen ongeparfumeerde handcrèmes bij het merk, voor wie, net als ik, allergisch of gevoelig is aan parfum.)
Het kleine formaat van de bekende tube stop je makkelijk in je handtas of het handschoenkastje van je wagen en bestaat intussen voor 95% uit gerecycleerd aluminium, waardoor zijn voetafdruk wordt beperkt. Dit jaar mocht de Franse illustrator Tristan Bonnemain aan de slag met de tube en andere producten voor de kerstcollectie.
Small Box Ginger & Lime van Savonneries Bruxelloises, € 15.
Helemaal Belgisch en helemaal artisanaal, deze twee zeepjes van het Brusselse Savonneries Bruxelloises. Die ruiken niet alleen heerlijk, de formule bevat ook karitéboter, amandelolie en glycerine om het uitdrogende effect dat zeep op de huid kan hebben te counteren.
Erg fijn om je handen mee te wassen en dat moeten we tegenwoordig genoeg doen, maar ik leg lekker ruikende zeepjes ook graag tussen mijn à la Marie Kondo opgevouwen kledij in mijn kledingkast.
Het Brusselse merk is te koop in sommige nicheparfumerieën, maar heeft ook een eigen webshop en momenteel ook een pop-up in de Brusselse Koninginnegalerij.
