These new or slightly older products were my favourite beauty discoveries of 2021. Part 2: skin and haircare.

Skincare: face
Tata Harper’s Superkind Radiance Mask for Sensitized Skin, 66 €, at Labelchic in Brussels
My skin tends to not like AHA acids – I blame glycolic acid – but this peeling face mask leads to no reaction at all and leaves my skin feeling smooth and soft. (And it’s free from fragrance and essential oils, as is the entire Superkind range. Which is great if, like me, you are allergic/sensitive to those.)
Catrice’s Pore 2 in 1 Peeling & Toner, 5,99 €, at Kruidvat
I’m not sure whether this peeling toner was a new launch but I was sent it last year. I think it is a good option if you have never tried AHAs or BHA before and want to see whether they work for your skin. 1% BHA and 3% AHA help gently remove dead skin cells and keep pores clean. Catrice picked mandelic acid as its AHA, which is one of the more gentle acids.
I switch between using this toner (I put some on a reusable cotton pad after cleansing in the evening and apply it all over my face) and Paula’s 2% BHA cult classic. I use acids about two times a week, certainly not every day as my skin would not respond well to daily acid use.
Celestetic’s Global Eye Care Serum, 48 €
This isn’t a new launch but I started using this Belgian eye serum last year. Its formula with peptides, hyaluronic acid, caffeine and l-carnitine promises to tackle wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes and puffiness. So all the major eye contour concerns.
I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and am under the impression my dark circles aren’t as visible as they used to be. I also love the light serum texture: it penetrates quickly but leaves time enough to give myself a depuffing, wake me up in the morning massage with my Cryo Ice Sticks (more about those in a later blog post!). And it’s a good base for concealer.
Shiseido’s Waso Shikulime Gel-to-Oil Cleanser, 26,04 €
This is one of the finest oil-based cleansers I have ever used. Massaging this gel-to-oil formula in your face feels like a treat: it just feels so silky and nice on skin and dissolves make-up (and other ‘dirt’ you want to get off your face) easily.
Beautical’s Eyelash Enhancing Serum, 69,95 €
I used this Belgian eyelash serum with panthenol and biotin as a lash boosting cure last summer and I feel like my eyelashes have been longer and stronger ever since. (Good to know: mother nature’s blessed me with pretty good lashes to start with. It’s not like I started with a lash line of 15 short, brittle hairs.)
I now use the serum one to two nights a week to maintain the result. (If I don’t forget.) I am still using the same bottle. So yes, it is quite pricey but you need little to get (and maintain) results.
Vichy’s Capital Soleil UV-Age Daily, 19,97 €
This formula is great if you are looking for a daily SPF to wear all year round: you don’t feel (or see) it on your skin and it works well with make-up.
I think it’s a pity this one doesn’t come in a fragrance-free version but its fragrance is hypoallergenic and my skin does not seem to react to it.
Skincare: body
Skin by Dings’ Foam Tastic Things Hydrating Foam Serum Body & Face, 40 €
This is the only fragranced body product I used last year because it’s just so nice to massage a soft foam into your legs and arms. It has a very subtle, hypoallergenic chamomile scent I do not seem to react to. You can use this foam serum on your face, too. And it’s 100% Belgian to boot.
YUN’s VGN Wash Prebiotic Wash Gel, 19,90 €
I’ve been on the ‘you only need lukewarm water to clean your vulva’ team for a long time, but writing articles on V-care and interviewing experts did pique my interest in specific care for down there. If it’s formulated properly, that is, so with the right pH and the right ingredients.
Ever since using this wash gel from Belgian YUN a few times a week, I am under the impression I itch less down there (blame the daily morning workouts in tight synthetic yoga leggings).
Boiron’s Dermoplasmine Calendula Mousse, 12,90 €
You don’t expect a feather-light, airy mousse to have very great healing and nourishing powers, but this one with calendula proves otherwise. The fragrance- and essential oil-free formula is a pleasure to apply, absorbs immediately and helped repair and soften the cracked skin of my phalanges.
Haircare
The Inkey List’s Haircare, starting from 10,99 €
While sipping cava al fresco on a nice summer evening, two beauty colleagues remarked that my hair looked so glossy. At the time, I had been using these The Inkey List products for a while. They are not new launches, but I bought them at Cult Beauty last year to try out.
The Peptide Volumizing Hair Treatment really seems to give my hair more volume, especially when I blowdry it. The hyaluronic acid in the Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Hair Treatment is supposed to attract and retain moisture, just like it does in skincare products, and thus preventing frizzy hair. Now, I have read articles in which experts explain why the acid is not interesting to use in haircare formulas. However, I do not know whether it is the acid or other ingredients in the formula, but this product does something for my hair.
The bottles look small, but I’ve been using them for quite a while now about twice a week and they are still not empty. Once they are, I think I am going to repurchase them as I think they do make a difference for my hair. Also, it’s extremely difficult to find haircare products I am not allergic to. (Thanks for not adding fragrance or essential oils to your hair care, The Inkey List!) And I’ll also add the brand’s Shea Oil Nourishing Treatment to my basket, to test out as well.
L’Arin’s Softening, Strengthening, Vitalizing Conditioner, 32,95 €
I did not try this Belgian natural conditioner myself: the formula contains lavender hydrolate and I’m allergic to lavender. But it did prove to be the ideal product for combing through my stepdaughter’s hair with a lice comb to try and get the lice out of her hair. (Ooh, what joy that was! And it went on for weeks!) Her curly hair smelled nice afterwards and felt really, really soft.
Plus, lice are supposed to hate the smell of lavender, so I’m hoping its scent will keep new lice from other kids away. (I can’t imagine the lice already living in her hair trying to escape because they don’t like the smell of lavender.)
Laguune’s Paradise Found Tropical Leave-in Hair Mask, 27,90 €
Belgian hair care brand Laguune launched with this leave-in hair mask last year. Its formula with coconut oil and tropical fruit extracts from açaí, papaya, goji and pequi promises shiny, nourished, frizz-free locks.
I like using it from time to time on my stepdaughter’s hair. It makes the TangleTeezer glide through her curls effortlessly (so without any screaming from her part) and it seems to give her slightly curly hair more definition. And I think she really likes its tropical holiday breeze smell.
Deze zowel nieuwe als wat oudere beautyproducten waren mijn favoriete ontdekkingen van 2021. Deel 2: skincare en haarverzorging.
Skincare: gezicht
Superkind Radiance Mask for Sensitized Skin van Tata Harper, € 66, o.m. bij Labelchic in Brussel
Mijn huid reageert doorsnee niet geweldig goed op peelende producten met AHA-zuren, ik vermoed dat vooral glycolzuur het probleem vormt. Maar dit peelende masker leidt tot geen enkele reactie, wél tot een gladde, zachte huid. (Het is vrij van parfum en essentiële oliën, net als de rest van de Superkindlijn. Goed om weten voor wie gevoelig/allergisch is aan die bestanddelen.)
Pore 2 in 1 Peeling & Toner van Catrice, € 5,99, bij Kruidvat
Of deze toner vorig jaar echt een nieuwe lancering was, weet ik niet, maar ik kreeg hem vorig jaar toegestuurd. Ik vind dit een fijn product voor wie nog nooit eerder peelende zuren heeft gebruikt en wil ontdekken of die wat voor zijn/haar/hun huid zijn.
1% BHA en 3% AHA-zuren helpen dode huidcellen zachtjes verwijderen én poriën schoon houden. Catrice koos voor amandelzuur, wat één van de zachtere AHA-zuren is. Ik wissel deze af met de 2% BHA van Paula’s Choice. Ik verdeel wat over een herbruikbaar watje en ga daar zacht mee over mijn gezicht na mijn reiniging ‘s avonds. Ik gebruik zo’n twee keer per week een peelend product: van meer wordt mijn huid niet gelukkig en ik gebruik ook nog retinol. (Je combineert liefst geen retinol en peelende zuren in dezelfde sessie.)
Global Eye Care Serum van Celestetic, € 48
Geen nieuwe lancering, maar ik begon dit Belgische oogserum vorig jaar te gebruiken. De formule met peptiden, hyaluronzuur, cafeïne en l-carnitine belooft minder rimpeltjes, donkere kringen en wallen. De grote ‘problemen’ van de oogcontour met andere woorden.
Ik heb al een paar maanden de indruk dat mijn donkere kringen minder opvallen en ik houd van de lichte serumtextuur die een goede basis vormt voor concealer.
Waso Shikulime Gel-to-Oil Cleanser van Shiseido, € 26,04
Dit is één van de allerfijnste oliecleaners die ik al heb getest en ik heb er al wel wat gebruikt. Je gezicht inmasseren met deze reiniger is een plezier omdat hij zo fijn ‘glijdt’ en hij maakt alle make-up makkelijk los, ook mascara.
Eyelash Enhancing Serum van Beautical, € 69,95
Ik heb dit Belgische wimperserum met panthenol en biotine vorige zomer als kuur gebruikt en heb de indruk dat mijn wimpers sindsdien langer en sterker zijn. (Goed om weten: ik heb van nature al vrij lange en vrij veel wimpers. Ik doe zo’n kuurtje af en toe als extra kuurtje, maar echt nodig is dat niet.)
Intussen gebruik ik het serum één à twee avonden per week om het resultaat te onderhouden. (Als ik dat niet vergeet.) Nog steeds met hetzelfde flesje trouwens. Dus ja, het serum is stevig geprijsd, maar je doet er ook lang mee.
Capital Soleil UV-Age Daily van Vichy, € 19,97
Een erg fijne formule die je niet op je huid voelt of ziet zitten en dus ideaal is om élke dag van het jaar te smeren om je huid tegen uv te beschermen. Ze werkt ook prima onder make-up.
Jammer dat er geen ongeparfumeerde versie bestaat, maar het parfum is hypoallergeen en ik leek er alvast niet op te reageren.
Skincare: lichaam
Foam Tastic Things Hydrating Foam Serum Body & Face van Skin by Dings, € 40
Het enige geparfumeerd lichaamsproduct dat ik vorig jaar gebruikte omdat het zo fijn is om een schuim te smeren. (Het zachte hypoallergene parfum ruikt naar kamille en ik lijk er niet op te reageren.) Je gebruikt het op je lichaam of op je gezicht. Helemaal Belgisch op de koop toe.
VGN Wash Prebiotic Wash Gel van YUN, € 19,90
Ik ben lang van het principe ‘je hebt enkel lauw water nodig om je vulva te reinigen’ geweest, maar door een paar artikels over V-care te schrijven en experts te interviewen, raakte ik geïntrigeerd in specifieke verzorging voor daar beneden. Als die goed geformuleerd is, toch: dus met de juiste pH-waarde en de juiste bestanddelen.
Sinds ik deze wasgel van het Belgische YUN een paar keer per week gebruik, heb ik de indruk dat ik minder last heb van jeuk. (Die ik, gok ik, te danken heb aan ochtendworkouts in strakke synthetische yogaleggings.)
Dermoplasmine Calendula Mousse van Boiron, € 12,90
Je verwacht van een luchtige mousse niet dat die erg grote helende en voedende krachten heeft, maar deze met calendula bewijst het tegendeel. De niet-geparfumeerde formule zonder essentiële oliën is een plezier om te smeren, trekt onmiddellijk in en hielp mijn gebarsten vingerkootjes herstellen en verzachten.
Haarverzorging
Haarverzorging van The Inkey List, vanaf € 10,99
Tijdens een zomerse apero merkten twee beautycollega’s op dat mijn haar zo mooi glansde. Ik gebruikte toen al een tijdje deze The Inkey List-producten. Het zijn geen nieuwe lanceringen, maar ik kocht ze vorig jaar op Cult Beauty om uit te proberen.
De Peptide Volumizing Hair Treatment lijkt mijn haar echt meer volume te geven, toch wanneer ik het föhn. De Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Hair Treatment moet net zoals in huidverzorging vocht aantrekken en vasthouden en zo pluishaar voorkomen. De meningen over het nut van hyaluronzuur in haarverzorging liggen uit elkaar (volgens sommige experts haalt het niets uit), maar ik heb echt de indruk dat dit serum wat voor mijn haar doet. Of dat aan het hyaluronzuur of andere bestanddelen in de formule ligt laat ik in het midden.
De flesjes ogen klein, maar ik gebruik ze intussen al een hele tijd elke keer ik mijn haar heb gewassen (zo’n twee keer per week) en ze zijn nog steeds niet leeg. Wanneer dat het geval is, ga ik ze opnieuw bestellen. En dan voeg ik ook de Shea Oil Nourishing Treatment toe aan mijn mandje, om ook eens te testen.
Softening, Strengthening, Vitalizing Conditioner van L’Arin, € 32,95
Deze Belgische, natuurlijke conditioner probeerde ik jammer genoeg niet zelf uit: de formule bevat lavendelhydrolaat en ik ben allergisch aan lavendel. Maar hij bleek wel ideaal om het haar van mijn stiefdochter door te kammen met een luizenkam glad in het hele luizen uit haar haar kammen-proces. (Ooh, wekenlange fun!) Haar haar rook lekker erna en voelde érg zacht aan.
Er wordt ook wel eens beweerd dat luizen niet graag lavendel ruiken, dus ik hoop dat de geur ervan nieuwe luizen van andere kindjes op afstand houdt. (Van de luizen IN haar haar kan ik me niet inbeelden dat die gillend uit haar haar vertrokken omdat ze niet graag lavendel ruiken.)
Paradise Found Tropical Leave-in Hair Mask van Laguune, € 27,90
Het Belgische haarverzorgingsmerk Laguune lanceerde vorig jaar dit leave-in haarmasker. De formule met kokosolie en tropische vruchtenextracten van açaí, papaya, goji en pequi belooft glanzend, gevoed, pluisvrij haar.
Ik gebruik dit af en toe graag op het haar van mijn stiefdochter: het zorgt ervoor dat de TangleTeezer moeiteloos door haar krullen glijdt (dus zonder gegil van haar kant) en het lijkt haar licht gekrulde haar meer definitie te geven. En ik denk dat ze ook fan is van de tropische vakantie-geur.
