These new beauty products and some oldies but goldies were my favourite beauty discoveries of 2021. Part 1: make-up and fragrance.

Make-up
Pat McGrath Labs’ MatteTrance Lipstick, 38,90 €, at Ici Paris XL
Not a new launch but the brand itself is newly available in Belgium since last year. (It is exclusively sold at Ici Paris XL.) This lipstick comes in beautiful, very richly pigmented colours, stays put well for a ‘classic’ lipstick and feels comfortable for a (very) matte formula. It is perfect if you like a full-on bold lip. But I also like using it to create more stained, hint of colour effect: I simply dab some on my lips and blend the colour with my finger.
I was sent the gorgeous classic red Elson when Ici Paris XL launched the brand here but unfortunately lost it after wearing it maybe three times. (I still haven’t found it.) I now am the happy owner of the fuchsia Full Panic.
Rouge Dior Forever Liquid, 41 €.
You don’t notice you are wearing this liquid lipstick once its formula has completely dried but the colour is full-on. I own the 100 Forever Nude (a perfect nude tone for my complexion) and the red 741.
Sleek’s Lip Dose in Problematic, 7,19 €, via Douglas
This lipstick was a bit of an impulse buy when I ordered some beauty products I needed at Douglas. What can I say? There was a 21% discount on almost everything for Singles Day. Did I really need a new lipstick? No. But after I did a big lipstick clean-out I noticed a fuchsia-like colour was missing in my collection. And at € 5.39, I could justify a possible misbuy.
The formula is very well pigmented, feels nice on my lips and hardly dries them out. One click of the pen gives the right amount of lipstick to make up your lips once. (I can even apply it twice.)
Should I need a new orange-red lipstick soon, the colour You Already Know seems like a good option.
Pixi Beauty’s Endles Silky Eye Pen, 15,50 €, at Ici Paris XL
Pixi Beauty was yet another brand Ici Paris XL added to its shopping range last year. This creamy eye pencil glides effortlessly over the eyelid. You can blend the formula out for a smokey eye effect or stick to a neat classic eyeliner. Its formula stays put all day long without smudging. It is well priced, too.
I have the deep brown Black Cocoa but there are 13 other colours to choose from.
Kjaer Weis’ Im-Possible Mascara, 34 €, at Beauty by Kroonen in Brussels
This isn’t the only mascara I loved using last year but the fact that it is refillable gives it an advantage over the others. The formula and brush give my lashes a nice curl and make them more voluminous and longer without looking fake.
Kruidvat’s Go Magic Eye Crayon in Copper Love, 3,79 €
This eyeshadow pencil can easily keep up with its much more expensive brothers. It glides easily over the eyelid, can be smudged quickly with your finger and stays in place all day.
I already got several messages from people who bought one or more of these pencils after my review and Instagram Reel to tell me they are all sold on this pencil too. Need I say more?
Shiseido’s POP PowderGel Eye Shadow, 27 €
I tend to prefer eyeshadow sticks and liquid formulas that dry into a powder that stays put all day long but this new Shiseido launch got me excited about eyeshadow powder again. The formula is very well-pigmented, feels silky-soft and applies easily. Even without a primer, it stays put well thanks to its gel polymers. By the end of the day it has faded slightly but it doesn’t crease. Bonus: in addition to classic shades, there are also bright colors in the range. There are 16 colors to choose from in Belgium.
Huda Beauty’s Bombbrows Microshade Brow Pencil, 17 €, at Ici Paris XL
I’m normally not a fan of eyebrow pencils, but this one won me over: its very fine tip makes it easy to draw extra hairs where needed, the built-in brush blends everything together for a natural finish and combs brow hairs into place.
Elin Cosmetics’ Foundation brush 1, 27,95 €
MUA Sabine Peeters launched her line of vegan makeup brushes last December. This foundation brush quickly became my favorite in my stash: its slanted, firm shape makes it quick and easy to buff foundation/tinted moisturizer/BB cream into the skin. And I don’t notice any ‘lines’ afterwards that give away I am wearing foundation, unlike with other brushes I tried. (And the hairs feel so soft.)
Huda Beauty’s Glowish Multi Dew Skin Tint, 37 €, at Ici Paris XL
Few face products make my skin as glowy as this tinted moisturizer does. I am not really convinced Skin Tint was the best name for this product: you might think it offers very light coverage but that’s not the case. The formula masks red cheeks, I just dab on some extra product where needed.
If you have (very) dry skin, the Multi Dew Skin Tint might not be for you. It can accentuate dry spots on my face. Using it on very well hydrated skin (use a hydrating primer or good moisturizer first) can help.
Bonus: Skin Tint is inclusive and has a colour that will match nearly everyone. Good to know: one shade fits multiple skin tones. I have colours 02 and 03, depending on the season. I use 02 in winter, 03 in summer.
L’Oréal Paris’ Accord Parfait Nude Tinted Serum, 19,99 €
Ever since the first lockdown or even before that, I gave up on wearing full-cover foundations. (Not that I ever was that big a fan of them.) Nowadays, I prefer tinted moisturizer meets foundation hybrids that give light to medium coverage, nourish/care for skin and have a natural, slightly glowy finish.
This one is/was a hype on social media and I get why. Its liquid serum texture means it is easy to apply, both with your fingers as with a brush, and you don’t feel it on your skin.
It offers light to medium coverage. I like to dab on a little bit of extra product where needed aka any redness on my cheeks to get more coverage. I like the addition of hyaluronic acid to make skin look fuller and smoother.
Fragrance
Chanel N°5, 139 € for 100ml
Chanel N°5 celebrated its 100th birthday last year and I finally felt mature enough to start wearing it. I never thought the iconic fragrance was for me but now I feel chic and sophisticated when I spray it on my wrists. It’s just so powdery in the best roaring 20’s kinda way.
Miglot Pure Sandalwood Edition 1 (limited edition), 344,50 € for 50 ml
A fragrance that consists of one fragrance raw material? Yes! Miglot selected a beautiful quality sandalwood from India. I think it is a sophisticated “skin perfume” that smells warm and creamy.
Deze nieuwe als wat oudere beautyproducten waren mijn favorieten van 2021. Deel 1: make-up en parfum.
MatteTrance Lipstick van Pat McGrath Labs, € 38,90, bij Ici Paris XL
Geen nieuwe lancering, maar dankzij Ici Paris XL is het merk wel sinds vorig jaar beschikbaar in België. (Je kon het ervoor natuurlijk online bestellen, maar soms test je toch nog liever producten in real life uit.) Prachtige kleuren, véél pigment (dus je hebt niet veel nodig voor een mooi effect) en voor een matte lipstick een comfortabele formule. Het best tot zijn recht komt deze lippenstift natuurlijk wanneer je de kleur voluit draagt. Maar ik dep deze ook graag wat op mijn lippen wanneer ik zin heb in een waasje kleur, of ze te droog zijn voor een volle laag lipstick.
Ik raakte de klassieke rode kleur Elson kwijt na drie keer dragen en die is nog steeds niet boven water gekomen. Intussen heb ik het fuchsia Full Panic.
Rouge Dior Forever Liquid van Dior, € 41.
Deze vloeibare lipstick voel je echt (haast) niet zitten eens hij is opgedroogd, maar zorgt wel voor véél kleur. Ik heb de voor mij perfecte nude 100 Forever Nude en de rode tint 741.
Lip Dose in Problematic van Sleek, € 7,19, via Douglas
Deze lippenstift was een beetje een impulsaankoop toen ik op Douglas enkele producten bestelde die ik nodig had én er 21% korting was voor Singles Day. Had ik écht een nieuwe lipstick nodig? Neen. Maar een fuchsia-achtige kleur ontbrak wél nadat ik grote kuis had gehouden in mijn lippenstiftcollectie. En aan € 5,39 was een eventuele miskoop nog te rechtvaardigen.
De formule is erg goed gepigmenteerd, voelt fijn aan en droogt mijn lippen haast niet uit. Je klikt één keer en hebt dan voldoende lipstick om je mond op te maken. (Ik kan zelfs twee keer mijn lippen stiften met één keer klikken.)
Mocht ik binnenkort een nieuwe oranjerode lippenstift nodig hebben, lijkt You Already Know me een goede optie.
Endles Silky Eye Pen van Pixi Beauty, € 15,50, bij Ici Paris XL
Ook dit cultmerk vervoegde vorig jaar het aanbod van Ici Paris XL. Dit crèmige oogpotlood glijdt even soepel over de huid als een mes door zachte boter. Je kan de formule vervagen voor een smokey effect, maar ook als je een klassiek eyelinerlijntje wil is het een aanrader. De formule blijft een hele dag netjes zitten. Goed geprijsd ook.
Ik heb het diepbruine Black Cocoa, maar er zijn nog 13 kleuren om uit te kiezen.
Im-Possible Mascara van Kjaer Weis, € 34, bij Beauty by Kroonen in Brussels
Dit is niet de enige fijne mascara die ik vorig jaar testte, maar dat hij navulbaar is, geeft hem een voorsprong op de andere. Mooie krul, mooi volume, veel lengte, hij doet het allemaal.
Go Magic Eye Crayon in Copper Love van Kruidvat, € 3,79
Dit oogschaduwpotlood moet absoluut niet onderdoen voor zijn véél duurdere broertjes. Het glijdt vlot over de huid, je vervaagt de formule snel met je vinger (of je gebruikt ze als liner) en ze blijft een hele dag mooi op zijn plek.
Ik kreeg al verschillende berichtjes van mensen die één of meerdere van deze potloden kochten na mijn review en Instagram Reel en ze zijn allemaal verkocht. Need I say more?
POP PowderGel Eye Shadow van Shiseido, € 27
Ik houd doorsnee meer van oogschaduwsticks en vloeibare formules die opdrogen tot een poeder dat onbeweeglijk blijft zitten, maar deze nieuwkomer van Shiseido wakkerde mijn interesse in oogschaduwpoeder opnieuw aan.
De formule is goed gepigmenteerd, voelt erg zacht aan en breng je makkelijk aan. Ook zonder primer blijft ze goed zitten dankzij haar gelpolymeren. Tegen het eind van de dag is ze wel lichtjes vervaagd, maar ze hoopt niet bij elkaar in mijn oogplooi.
Bonus: naast klassieke tinten zitten er ook felle kleurtjes in het gamma. Kiezen kan in België uit 16 kleuren.
Bombbrows Microshade Brow Pencil van Huda Beauty, € 17, bij Ici Paris XL
Ik ben normaal geen fan van wenkbrauwpotloden, maar deze wist me te bekeren: met de érg fijne punt teken ik makkelijk haartjes bij. Met het ingebouwde borsteltje vervaag je alles voor een zachter resultaat en kam je je haartjes op hun plek.
Foundationborstel 1 van Elin Cosmetics, € 27,95
Make-upartiest Sabine Peeters lanceerde eind vorig jaar haar lijn van vegan make-upborstels. Deze foundationborstel werd al snel mijn favoriet: door de afgeschuinde vorm werk je snel en makkelijk foundation/getinte dagcrème/BB cream aan en blend je alles mooi in de huid. Zonder dat je van die ‘streepjes’ krijgt die verraden dat je foundation draagt, wat ik met foundationborstels vaak heb. (En hij voelt zo zacht op de huid.)
Glowish Multi Dew Skin Tint van Huda Beauty, € 37, bij Ici Paris XL
Weinig teintproducten geven mijn huid zoveel glow als deze getinte dagcrème. Dat vind ik wel een foute benaming: deze formule dekt goed en krijgt zelfs rode wangen gecamoufleerd.
Heb je een (erg) droge huid? Dan is de Multi Dew Skin Tint misschien niet je beste vriend: hij kan bij mij in mijn droge plekjes kruipen. Eerst een hydraterende primer of goede moisturizer gebruiken kan helpen.
Bonus: het inclusieve kleurenpallet zodat (haast) iedereen een geschikte kleur vindt. Goed om weten: één tint past bij meerdere huidskleuren. Ik heb zelf de 02 en 03, afhankelijk van het seizoen. 02 draag ik in de winter, 03 in de zomer.
Accord Parfait Nude Tinted Serum van L’Oréal Paris, € 19,99
Ik draag sinds de eerste lockdown, en ervoor eigenlijk ook al, niet vaak meer erg dekkende foundation. Ik geef de voorkeur aan getinte dagcrème meets foundation-hybrides die naast een lichte tot medium dekking ook verzorgende bestanddelen bevatten en een naturelle, licht glowy finish hebben.
Deze is/was een hype op sociale media en ik begrijp waarom. Zijn vloeibare serumtextuur betekent dat je hem makkelijk aanbrengt, met je vingers of een penseel, en je voelt hem niet zitten. Op rode wangen dep ik graag wat extra product met een vinger, maar helemaal volledig dekken doet hij wel niet. Fijn ook dat er hyaluronzuur in de formule zit: dat helpt vocht in de huid houden waardoor fijne lijntjes worden uitgevlakt.
Parfum
Chanel N°5
Chanel N°5 vierde vorig jaar zijn honderdste verjaardag en ik voelde me eindelijk volwassen genoeg om het iconische parfum te beginnen dragen. Tot dan vond ik de aldehydegeur niets voor mij, nu voel ik me chic en gesofisticeerd wanneer ik hem over mijn polsen verstuif. Héél Roaring 20’s.
Miglot Pure Sandalwood Edition 1 (limited edition), 344,50 € for 50 ml
Een parfum dat uit één deurbestanddeel bestaat? Jawel! Miglot selecteerde een prachtige kwaliteit sandelhout uit India. Ik vind het een mooi ‘huidparfum’ dat warm en crèmig geurt.
