Can a rinse-off conditioner really make your hair glossy, smooth and overall better looking in just 8 seconds? I put Elsève’s Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water to the test.

A liquid conditioner that promises smooth and glossy locks in literally 8 seconds is something I want to risk an allergic reaction or two for. Elsève’s (or Elvive’s, depending on where you live) Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water was such an instant (TikTok) hype at its launch in the US in 2020 that I was impatiently waiting for it to be launched in Belgium. The before and after pictures on social media and raving articles and reviews were véry promising. (Note: there is also another version available in the US.) And now Elsève’s Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water has finally launched here our.
The principle of this liquid, “lamellar” conditioner? Thin lamellar layers of active ingredients stick instantly to damaged parts of the hair fiber so they become (temporarily) smooth again and damaged (long) hair becomes easy to comb, soft and shiny. In a wink. Or well, 8 seconds to be precise.
(This principle is a sort of derivative of the principle of micellar water. Simply put: the surfactants in micellar water are held together in micelles, which attach themselves to sebum, sun filters and other impurities on the skin. When you run a cotton pad, soaked in micellar water, over your skin, that is how the dirt is taken off.)

Episode 260 also talks about it, and in yet another episode, which I cannot retrieve again, cosmetics formulator Valerie George, one of the presenters, reviews the product.

Disclaimer: I should not be using this product as it contains fragrance and linalool, both of which I am allergic to. But my curiosity was greater than my fear of an itchy scalp. Or of my hair burning up in flames, as the packaging warns that your hair is flammable as long as it is not dry. (I think that might be due to the high alcohol content in the formula.)
The name of the product is well chosen. Liquid conditioner really means liquid conditioner. The 8 Seconds Wonder Water looks like water but very strongly scented water. I’m not the biggest fan of the scent but that’s personal.
The packaging recommends to apply 20 ml of product on fine to medium hair, which I find difficult to estimate. Maybe a pump system that pumps out the right amount of product would have been handier. (According to my calculations, you get eight uses out of one bottle when using 20 ml every time. That is 1.25 € per use.)
Distributing a watery texture through your hair isn’t easy. I pour some product into my hand and then also apply some directly to my medium long hair, but I feel like I lose quite a lot of product in both cases. You briefly massage the product in, rinse it out and the miracle is done. (Good to know: the formula can heat up when you apply it but that doesn’t happen every time I use it.)
While rinsing out the product, my hair feels incredibly smooth and it is indeed easy to comb through but not that much easier than when I use my usual conditioner. Unfortunately, there is no impressive before and after on my hair. I test the product on the hair on the right side of my head and let it air dry. I notice little difference between the treated and untreated side.
The second time I try it, I blow dry my hair and the treated side feels very smooth and soft and looks a bit more glossy than the untreated side.
Still, I’m not enthusiastically swinging my hair the #wonderwaterwhip way. Maybe I expected too much from the hype, maybe the product just isn’t for my hair (but it’s supposed to work on every hair type according to L’Oréal’s Instagram posts) or maybe I’m just using too little of it?

Kan een vloeibare rinse-off conditioner je haar écht in 8 seconden glossy, glad en er simpelweg beter doen uitzien? Ik testte het Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water van Elsève.
Een vloeibare conditioner die in 8 seconden glad en glossy haar belooft, daarvoor riskeer ik al eens een allergische reactie of twee. Het Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water van Elsève was bij zijn lancering in de VS in 2020 zo’n grote instant (TikTok)hype dat ik vol ongeduld zat te wachten tot het product ook bij ons beschikbaar werd. De voor- en nafoto’s op sociale media en lovende artikels en reviews waren nu eenmaal veelbelovend. (Opgelet: in de VS bestaat ook een andere versie.)
Sinds begin dit jaar is het Dream Long 8 Seconds Wonder Water dan eindelijk ook bij ons beschikbaar. Het principe van die vloeibare, ‘lamellaire’ conditioner? Dunne lamellaagjes met actieve bestanddelen omhullen instant beschadigde delen van de haarvezel zodat die weer (tijdelijk) glad worden en beschadigd (lang) haar makkelijk doorkambaar, zacht en glanzend wordt. In een wip. Of in 8 seconden om preciezer te zijn.
(Dat principe valt wat te vergelijken met dat van micellair water. Simpel gesteld: de oppervlakteactieve stoffen (surfactants aka reinigende stoffen) in micellair water zitten in micellen die zich als het ware vasthaken aan talg, zonnefilters en andere ‘vuiltjes’. Die haal je op die manier van de huid wanneer je met een in micellair water gedrenkt watje over je huid gaat.)
Voor wie een meer wetenschappelijke uitleg van echte wetenschappers wil: in aflevering 223 van de podcast The Beauty Brains komen het product en de technologie aan bod. (Het blijkt geen ‘nieuwe’ technologie.) Ook aflevering 260 gaat erover en in nog een andere aflevering, die ik niet meer terugvind, vertelt Valerie George, één van de presentators en cosmeticaformulator, over haar ervaringen met het product.

Getest
Disclaimer: ik mag dit product eigenlijk niet gebruiken door mijn parfum- en linaloolallergie. Maar mijn nieuwsgierigheid was groter dan mijn vrees voor een jeukende hoofdhuid. Of de angst dat mijn haar in brand vliegt. De verpakking waarschuwt namelijk dat je behandelde haar ontvlambaar is zolang het niet droog is. (Ik gok dat dat ligt aan de hoge hoeveelheid alcohol in de formule.)
De naam van dit product is alvast goed gekozen. Vloeibare conditioner betekent ook echt vloeibare conditioner. Het 8 Seconds Wonder Water lijkt effectief op water, maar dan erg sterk geparfumeerd water. Ik ben niet meteen fan van de geur, maar dat is persoonlijk.
Volgens de verpakking breng je op fijn tot medium haar 20 ml product aan, wat ik moeilijk inschatten vind. Een pompje dat meteen de juiste hoeveelheid product geeft was handig geweest. (Volgens mijn berekeningen haal je in dat geval acht conditionerbeurten uit één flacon. Dat kost je dus een kleine € 1,25 per keer.)
Een watertextuur over je haar verdelen blijkt niet meteen makkelijk. Ik giet wat product in mijn hand en breng ook wat rechtstreeks op mijn halflange haar aan, maar heb de indruk dat ik in beide gevallen ook veel product verlies. Kort inmasseren, uitspoelen en het wonder is geschied. (Opgelet: de formule kan opwarmen bij het inmasseren, maar doet dat bij mij niet elke keer.)
Tijdens het uitspoelen voelt mijn haar ontzettend glad en het kamt inderdaad vlot door, maar niet meteen veel vlotter dan met mijn gebruikelijke conditioner. Jammer genoeg is van een indrukwekkende voor en na op mijn haar geen sprake. Ik test het product de eerste keer op de helft van mijn haar en laat het aan de lucht drogen. Ik merk weinig verschil tussen de behandelde en onbehandelde kant.
Bij een tweede testbeurt föhn ik mijn haar en voelt de onbehandelde kant érg glad en zacht en glanst ze precies meer dan de onbehandelde kant. (Zie foto.)
Toch sla ik niet enthousiast aan het #wonderwaterwhip-zwieren met mijn haar. Misschien had ik té veel verwacht van de hype, misschien is het product gewoon niets voor mijn haar (maar het zou op elk haartype moeten werken als ik de Instagramposts van L’Oréal Paris mag geloven) of misschien gebruik ik er gewoon te weinig van?
