Een bekend gezicht dat een eigen make-uplijn lanceert, er is niet veel nieuws aan, maar Trinny Woodall bewijst dat het ook origineel en eigenzinnig kan. Ik testte (eindelijk) Trinny London.

De beste ideeën zijn vaak de eenvoudigste. Trinny Woodall* stopte haar make-up altijd in kleine potjes die ze in haar handtas kon stoppen zodat ze on the go altijd haar make-up kon bijwerken zonder de fullsize producten te moeten meezeulen.
Daaruit ontstond de idee van make-up in potjes die aan elkaar klikken tot een handige stack die je makkelijk in je handtas/weekendtas kwijt kan. In de potjes: no fuss crèmeformules die je met je vingers kan aanbrengen en blenden en die liefst multitasken. De concealer is ook foundation, de lipkleuren gebruik je (vaak) ook als blush, de oogschaduw kan je, afhankelijk van de kleur, met een eyelinerpenseel aanbrengen als liner. (Voor die penselen bedacht Woodall trouwens een clevere oplossing: de T-kit, één kwast met drie opzetstukken om eyeliner te trekken en je lippen en wenkbrauwen vlot in te tekenen.)

Na vijf jaar research en investeerders ronselen lanceerde Woodall in 2017 Trinny London. Naast de producten in stackable potjes zijn er ook primers en concealers in meer traditionele tubes. En een mascara en getinte wenkbrauwmascara die in één verpakking zitten. (Weer plaats bespaard in je handtas!)
Intussen lanceerde het merk zijn skincarelijn en dat is een logische zet: Trinny zelf staat bekend om haar obsessie voor huidverzorging en -behandelingen en de eerlijke video’s die ze daarover post op Instagram. Ik ben vooral benieuwd naar het vitamine C-serum met een érg hoge dosis van de vitamine: 30%.
Getest
Ik houd het merk al van in het begin in het oog en was dan ook blij dat ik het voor een artikel in Billie (eindelijk) uitgebreid kon testen. Trinny London stuurde me een paar producten op om te testen. De gehypte BFF SPF30 Cream, waarvan een beautycollega fan is, mag ik jammer genoeg niet testen omdat ik er allergisch aan ben, maar veel van de andere make-up- en skincareproducten zijn vrij van parfum en linalool.
In mijn stack: de Just a Touch Foundation + Concealer in Bambi, de Lip Luxe in Demon, een T-Tones Eyeshadow Duo met Wisdom en Fortune en de metallic oogschaduw Eyetallic in Juno. Ik testte ook nog de Lash2Brow in Black en Espresso en de BFF Serum Eye Concealer in Maisie.
Trinny London is make-up voor dummies en dat bedoel ik absoluut niet denigrerend. De crèmige formules zijn zo handig om aan te brengen en te blenden met je vingers dat je dat haast met gesloten ogen zou kunnen doen. Omdat het (vooral) crèmes zijn, voelen ze ook comfortabel op de huid.
Ik denk dat het ook een handig ‘instapmerk’ is voor mensen die wel graag make-up zouden gebruiken, maar niet goed weten wat of hoe. Op de website kan je via een vragenlijst ontdekken welke kleuren goed met je teint/ogen/haarkleur matchen. Of je boekt een online consultatie. (In de winkels in het VK krijg je dat advies natuurlijk van een professional.)
Voor fans van uitgebreide Instagrammake-up is Trinny London waarschijnlijk geen ideale match, houd je van naturelle, frisse looks wél. En ook wanneer het wat opvallender mag, kan je je ogen uitspelen met de oogschaduw, afhankelijk van de kleur. Of je lippen met de rijk gepigmenteerde Lip Luxe. Het kleurenpallet is trouwens uitgebreid en inclusief. Of je nu van opvallendere, diepere kleuren houdt of van passe-partouts nudes, ze zijn er allemaal. Ook de teintproducten zijn trouwens inclusief.
Je moet er wel voor te vinden zijn om je make-up met je vingers aan te brengen en dus ook met je vingers in je potjes te zitten. Wat sommige mensen niet zo hygiënisch vinden. Maar als je eerst je handen wast, zie ik daar geen graten in. De producten in potjes zijn trouwens tussen 6 en 12 maanden (veilig) te gebruiken eens geopend.
Nu, goedkoop is het merk niet: mijn stack van 4 komt op € 103. Maar de formules gaan erg lang mee omdat je er niet veel van nodig hebt. En ik kan me inbeelden dat Trinny’s doelpubliek niet het soort mensen is dat een érg uitgebreide make-upcollectie heeft en constant nieuwigheden wil testen, wel mensen die goede basics willen waarmee ze makkelijk en snel elke dag aan de slag kunnen.
Lip Luxe in Demon, € 26,50
Lip Luxe is érg rijk gepigmenteerd: dep je de kleur op je lippen (of wangen) krijg je een mooi waasje. Je kan ze ook vol aanbrengen (met een penseel) voor een rijke, diepe kleur. De formule voelt comfortabel aan en lijkt mijn (immer drogere) lippen niet extra uit te drogen. Ze vervaagt bij mij na enkele uren (of drankjes) tot een stain, maar bijwerken gaat snel. Ze vervaagt bovendien egaal, niet met een naakte cirkel in het midden van je mond, je weet wel wat ik bedoel.
Demon is een mooi helder rood dat mijn gezicht instant een boost geeft. De kleur werkt ook mooi als rozige stain voor een no make-up make-uplook. Let wel op wanneer je deze rode tint als blush gebruikt: je wil er niet rood uitgeslagen uitzien. Je hebt echt weinig product nodig. Ik gebruik het restje dat op mijn vingers overblijft nadat ik mijn lippen heb gedaan om wat kleur op mijn wangen te deppen. Zo krijg je een gezond rozig kleurtje.
Eye2Eye Eye Shadow in Wisdom en Fortune, € 21,50
Dit T-Tones Eyeshadow Duo met Wisdom en Fortune was een limited edition voor de feesten, maar je kan de kleuren wel apart kopen. Wat misschien ook handiger is. Omdat dit potje in twee is gedeeld is het wat moeilijk om de kleuren er mooi uit te krijgen met een vinger. Dat lukt het best met mijn pink. Om ook oogschaduw uit de hoekjes van het potje te halen, gebruik je best een penseel.
Fortune is een “molten rose gold”, Wisdom een “soft neutral taupe”, wat ze allebei ideaal maakt voor dagdagelijkse oogmake-up die volgens mij zowat elke huidskleur moet staan.
Het kleureffect van deze tinten is subtiel, maar je kan ze wel in laagjes opbouwen voor meer intensiteit. Ze zijn trouwens zo crèmig dat ik ze ook makkelijk met mijn vingers in elkaar blend. Jammer genoeg blijven ze op mijn ogen geen hele dag perfect zitten, maar ze creasen ook niet overduidelijk. En aangezien je je stack handig kan wegstoppen, kan je je make-up gedurende de dag ook altijd even makkelijk en snel bijwerken.
Eyetallic in Juno, € 21,50
De metallic oogschaduw voelt poederiger aan, hoewel het een cream to powder-formule is. Juno is een mooi diepgroen dat het groen in mijn bruine ogen goed doet uitkomen. Je kan het in een waasje aanbrengen voor een heel licht kleurtje, maar ook voluit voor groen gaan, wat ik met Oudjaar deed.
Een tip: ik vind het handig om de Eye2Eye in taupe als een soort primer onder deze kleur te gebruiken. Wat ook handig is wanneer je van het werk geen tijd hebt om naar huis te gaan om je op te frissen en je make-up snel wat intenser wil maken voor een avondje uit.
Just a Touch Foundation + Concealer, € 33,50
Je hebt niet veel van deze crèmige foundation/concealer nodig om donkere kringen en rode vlekjes te verdoezelen. De dekking is medium. De formule dekt mijn donkere kringen en rode wangen niet 100%, maar mijn huid ziet er wel beduidend egaler uit en mijn blik frisser.
Je moet het product wel even goed inwerken met je vingers zodat hun warmte de crème, die een vrij ‘stevige’ textuur heeft, met je huid doet versmelten.
Omdat je met zo’n klein potje zit, ga je niet meteen foundation over je hele gezicht smeren, maar dat is dan ook niet de bedoeling.
Lash2Brow, € 33,50
Dit duo is handig voor een weekendje weg/op vakantie omdat je twee producten in één verpakking hebt: de mascara is prima en doet zijn job, maar is niet uitzonderlijk. De getinte wenkbrauwmascara met vezeltjes vind ik wel érg goed. Het borsteltje is fijn genoeg om makkelijk het dunne deel van je wenkbrauwen aan te zetten, de formule geeft je wenkbrauwen meer kleur en wat meer volume en het resultaat blijft bij mij de hele dag mooi. Handig.
Prijs-kwaliteit zit dit product wat mij betreft ook erg goed: voor de betere mascara bij de drogist betaal je ook al snel zo’n € 17.
BFF Serum Eye Concealer in Maisie, € 31
Het getinte oogserum heeft een fijne, lichte textuur, verwacht dus geen volledige dekking. Het product is een mix van een oogserum en een concealer en combineert dus verzorging met een lichte dekking. De formule met peptiden, hyaluronzuur en vitamine C moet op termijn inwerken op donkere kringen en kraaienpootjes en de huid wat verstevigen.
De applicatorkop voelt lekker koel wanneer je het product aanbrengt, wat in de ochtend altijd een fijn gevoel is. Ik gebruik de BFF Serum Eye Concealer graag onder mijn Just a Touch of Foundation + Concealer die meer dekt, afhankelijk van hoeveel laagjes je aanbrengt. Maar dat hoeft niet per se.
Niet goedkoop, maar het merk berekende dat je met deze tube vier maanden toekomt wanneer je het product elke dag gebruikt.

A famous face launching a make-up/skincare brand is nothing new but Trinny Woodall proves a “celebrity brand” CAN be original and quirky. I (finally) tested Trinny London.
The best ideas are often the most simple ones. Trinny Woodall* used to put her make-up products in tiny jars she could take everywhere with her in her handbag so she could always do her make-up on the go without having to drag her full-size products around.
Hence the idea to develop make-up in little jars that click together into a handy stack that you can easily put in your handbag. Inside the jars: no fuss cream formulas you can easily apply and blend with your fingertips and that are (preferably) multitaskers. The concealer is also a foundation, the lip colours can (often) be used as blush, you can use the eyeshadow as an eyeliner, depending on its colour. (Woodall came with a handy make-up pencil solution: the T-kit, three removable make-up brushes to draw eyeliner and make up your lips and brows easily and neatly.)

It took Woodall five years of research and finding the right investors before she launched Trinny London in 2017. Apart from the stackable make-up there are also primers, concealers and a mascara and brow mascara in one in more traditional packaging.
The brand also launched its skincare range recently, which is a very logical move. Trinny herself is known for her obsession with all things skincare and skin treatments and the honest reviews she posts about products on Instagram. I am very curious about the vitamine C serum as it contains a very high dose of the vitamin, 30%.
Tested
I have been keeping an eye on the brand since its very beginnings, so I was very pleased I got to test it for an article I wrote for Billie. Trinny London was so kind to send me some products to review. Its hyped BFF SPF30 Cream is a no go for me as I am allergic to its formula but I know a beauty colleague loves it. But plenty make-up (and skincare) products are free from fragrance and essential oils.
My stack consists of the Just a Touch Foundation + Concealer in Bambi, Lip Luxe in Demon, the T-Tones Eyeshadow Duo in Wisdom and Fortune and the metallic eye shadow Eyetallic in Juno. On top to my stack I also tested the Lash2Brow in Black and Espresso and the BFF Serum Eye Concealer in Maisie.
Trinny London is make-up for dummies and I do not mean that in a derogatory way at all. Its creamy formulas are so easy to apply with your fingers that you could put on your make-up without looking in the mirror. As they are mostly cream formulas they feel very comfortable on the skin, too.
I think the brand is an easy entry into the world of make-up if you are new to using make-up and/or you like to keep things (pretty) simple. You can fill in a questionnaire on the website to discover which colours suit you best or you book an online appointment with a Trinny London MUA or skincare specialist. (Instore in the UK, you can always get the advise of a professional MUA.)
Trinny London probably isn’t a match with fans of complicated Instagram make-up but if you like natural, fresh looks it is. And even when you want to glam your look up a bit, you can make your eyes or lips pop, depending on the intensity of the colour of eyeshadow or Lip Luxe you use.
You do have to like applying make-up with your fingers and therefore putting your fingers in your make-up jars though. Some people don’t find that very hygienic, but if you wash your hands first, I don’t see the problem with that. The jarred products can be safely used for between 6 and 12 months once opened.
The brand is not cheap: my stack of 4 costs 103 €. But the formulas go a long way as you need little product. And I can imagine that the Trinny London customer is not someone who owns a very extensive collection of make-up products and wants to constantly test new launches. I think the brand speaks to people who want good basics to use every day, that can take them from work to a (dinner) party.
Lip Luxe in Demon, 26,50 €
Lip Luxe is extremely pigmented: you can simply dab a bit of the colour on your lips (or cheeks) to get a pretty stain. Or you apply it full-on (with a lip pencil) for a pout that really stands out. The formula feels comfortable on my lips and does not seem to dry them out (any more than they already are). It fades after a couple of hours (or drinks) into a pretty stain. But it is easy to reapply. And it fades evenly: not in the ‘the inner part of your lips form a bare lip circle while the rest of your lips is still red version. You know what I mean.
Demon is a bright, happy red that gives my face an instant boost. It looks great as a rosy stain for a no make-up make-up look. If you plan on using the colour as a blush, make sure you use very little. And I mean very little as the colour is so intensely pigmented. You do not want to end up with red instead of rosy cheeks. I simply dab what little is left on my fingers (from doing my lips) on my cheeks for a healthy flush of colour.
Eye2Eye Eye Shadow in Wisdom and Fortune, 21,50 €
This T-Tones Eyeshadow Duo with Wisdom and Fortune was a limited edition for the holiday season but you can buy the colours separately. Which might be handier. As the jar is divided into two, it can be a bit tricky on getting the colours out evenly. I use my pink but if you want to get out the eyeshadow in the corners as well, you have to use an eye shadow pencil.
Fortune is a “molten rose gold”, Wisdom a “soft neutral taupe”, so these colours are perfect for your daily going to work or soft weekend make-up and they will suit I think about any skin tone.
The colour effect of these is subtle but you can build up their intensity by layering. They are so creamy I can easily blend them together using my fingers, no pencil needed. Unfortunately, they do not stay put on my eyelids all day long but they do not crease very blatantly either. And as you can easily take your stack everywhere with you, you can easily reapply it throughout the day.
Eyetallic in Juno, 21,50 €
This metallic eye shadow is a cream to powder formula but it feels more powdery to the touch. Juno is a pretty, deep green that makes the green in my brown eyes pop. You can use a thin layer for a hint of colour or you can apply several layers to really make your eyes stand out and/or create a smokey eye, which I did on New Year’s Eve.
I like using the taupe colour of the Eye2Eye as a sort of primer underneath this colour. Which is also handy if you do not have time to go home after work to get changed for a (dinner) party but still want to do a bit of a heavier eye look.
Just a Touch Foundation + Concealer, 33,50 €
You don’t need much of this creamy foundation/concealer to conceal dark circles and redness. The coverage is medium. The formula does not cover my dark circles and red cheeks 100%, but my skin looks significantly more even and my eyes look fresher.
You do need to work the product in well with your fingers so that their heat helps melt the cream, which has a fairly ‘firm’ texture, with your skin. If you like applying foundation all over your face, this is not the product for you as you only use it where it is (most) needed.
Lash2Brow, 33,50 €
This duo comes in handy for a weekend away/a holiday as you have two products in one tube. The mascara does its job: it is fine, but not exceptional. I really like the tinted brow mascara with fibers: the brush is fine enough to easily apply the product to the thin ends of your brows, the formula adds colour and a bit more volume to your brows, and the result stays pretty all day.
Price-wise, it’s a good product, too as you get two products for the price of one. (And a drugstore mascara easily costs 17 €, too.)
BFF Serum Eye Concealer in Maisie, 31 €
The tinted eye serum has a light texture and does not offer full coverage but it does make me look more awake. The product is a mix of an eye serum and a concealer, so it combines skincare ingredients with light coverage. The formula with peptides, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C should act on dark circles and crow’s feet and firm the skin.
I like to use the BFF Serum Eye Concealer under my Just a Touch of Foundation + Concealer, which covers more, depending on how many coats you apply. The applicator tip feels nice and cool when you apply the product, which is always a nice feeling in the morning.
It isn’t cheap but the brand calculated that it lasts you four months if you use the serum daily.
