Make-up multitaskers

Omdat je de Marie Kondo in je hebt losgelaten en met minder véél kan, omdat je licht wil reizen of omdat je liefst alles uit je (prijzige) make-up wil halen: sommige producten zijn handige multitaskers.

“Ik houd van het idee van one stop shopping, dat je één product op verschillende manieren gebruikt,” vertelt Val Garland, artistiek directeur van de make-up bij L’Oréal Paris. “Zo kan je een foundation perfect als concealer gebruiken.”

In tijden van overconsumptie is multitasken met je make-up geen slecht idee. En je kan meteen de aankoop van die dure lipstick verantwoorden. (“Maar ik gebruik hem ook als blush!”) Sommige producten worden meteen als multitaskers in de markt gezet, maar je kan met je favoriete lipstick of oogschaduw ook meer dan je denkt.

Lipstick als blush… 

(Bruin)roze of koraalkleurige lipstick geeft wangen een gezonde gloed. Breng een vleugje op de appeltjes van je wangen aan en werk de kleur uit met je vingers. Door je lichaamswarmte versmelt die mooi met je huid. Opgelet: matte texturen zijn te droog en kunnen je huid er doods doen uitzien, een te glossy finish zorgt dan weer voor een ongewenst highlighteffect. Donkerdere huidjes komen weg met felle(re) kleuren, blekere houden het bij zachte tinten. Stift ook je lippen met dezelfde tint voor een chic effect.

Of oogschaduw 

“Ik gebruik de zacht getinte lipbalsem van de Infaillible 24Hr Lipstick van L’Oréal Paris graag op de oogleden om een glossy catwalkachtige glans te creëren,” vertelt Garland. De tip is het proberen waard, maar heb je gevoelige(re) ogen, check dan zeker of de formule parfumloos is. Ook menthol en muntextracten die voor een tintelend, fris gevoel zorgen mijd je liefst in de buurt van je ogen. (En liefst ook in het algemeen omdat ze je huid kunnen uitdrogen en/of irriteren.)

Crèmeblush op je lippen

Het omgekeerde kan ook: breng crèmeblush aan op je lippen voor een zacht, subtiel kleurtje. Opgelet: deze texturen zijn vaak niet geformuleerd om te verzorgen of hydrateren, wat een lipstick vaak wél doet. Last van droge lippen? Breng eerst wat lippenbalsem aan voor je je mond inkleurt met blush. Gewoon, met je vingertip. Easy does it.

Concealer als contour… 

De concealer die je in de zomer kocht matcht niet meer met je huidskleur? Probeer hem dan eens om je gezicht te contouren! Breng een concealer die twee tinten donkerder is dan je huid aan onder je jukbeenderen, naast je neusvleugels, aan je haarlijn, vlak onder het kaaksbeen en op je slapen. Blend de formule mooi in de huid met een borstel of je vingers.

Of primer 

Een langhoudende concealer werkt ook goed als nude oogschaduw of als primer op je oogleden voor je poederoogschaduw aanbrengt.

Foundation als concealer

“Breng je foundation eerst met een penseel als foundation overal op het gezicht aan. Daarna kan je wat product met je vingers deppen waar je extra coverage kan gebruiken,” tipt Garland.

Oogschaduw in je wenkbrauwen… 

Een bruine, matte tint poederoogschaduw is perfect om wenkbrauwen in te tekenen. Kies een kleur die bij die van je wenkbrauwen past (liefst één tint lichter) en breng ze aan met een wenkbrauwpenseeltje. Fixeer de kleur eventueel nog met wat transparante wenkbrauwgel.

Of als highlighter 

Zachte rozige of gouden tinten kan je ook als highlighterpoeder gebruiken.

Zonnepoeder op je ogen… 

Zonnepoeder zorgt niet alleen voor een instant sun kissed glowop je jukbeenderen, het is ook perfect om je ogen een vleugje kleur te geven. Mat of met glitterdeeltjes maakt niet uit. Breng het poeder simpelweg op je oogleden aan met een fluffy oogschaduwborstel voor een zonnige blik.

Of als contour

Een mat zonnepoeder kan je perfect gebruiken om je gezicht te contouren.

Khôlpotlood als oogschaduw

Je tovert je favoriete oogpotlood makkelijk om tot oogschaduw. Breng een dikke lijn aan in je wimpers en vervaag de kleur naar boven toe met een blendborstel (of met het borsteltje dat aan je potlood zit). Een smeuïgere formule werkt het best.

Gloss als highlighter 

Een subtiele glow op je jukbeenderen creëer je makkelijk met transparante lipgloss. Kies voor een glitterloze versie voor een erg natuurlijk resultaat.

Lippotlood als lipstick

Crèmige, hydraterende lippotloden hoeven vaak geen extra laagje lipstick. Pluspunt: ben je allergisch aan parfum, dan is een potlood een waardige lipstickvervanger. De formules ervan zijn doorgaans geurloos.

De gouden tint of de tint eronder kan je als highlighter gebruiken, met de mat bruine kleur kan je je wenkbrauwen aanzetten.

Hoola van Benefit (€ 34,68)

Er zijn tegenwoordig meer matte zonnepoeders dan vroeger, maar deze klassieker blijft één van de beste. Mooi om een zonnegloed te creëren, maar ook goed als contourpoeder.

Teinte Idole Ultra Wear Stick in 202 Rosy Flush van Lancôme

Een romige blushstick die je ook op je lippen kan gebruiken. Of, waarom niet, op je oogleden? De formule is parfumloos.

The Multiple in Orgasm van Nars (€ 41, bij Parfuma)

Het iconische blushpoeder bestaat ook als multitaskende crèmestick. Je gebruikt deze versie op wangen, lippen of ogen. Groot verschil met de originele: er zitten glansdeeltjes in de formule.

Nude Moisturizing Fluid Foundation in 10 van Annayake (€ 43,50, bij Planet Parfum)

Deze hydraterende foundation kan ook als concealer dienen.

Lipliner Pencil in 07 Plum van Clarins (€ 15,90)

Een lekker romige lippotlood dat lipstick overbodig maakt.

Infaillible 24Hr Lipstick in 125 Born to Blush van L’Oréal Paris

Garland gebruikt de zacht getinte lippenbalsems van de vernieuwde Infaillible 24Hr Lipstick graag op de oogleden. Opgepast: de formule is geparfumeerd.

The Double Mirror Cap in Minimal Chic en Rouge G de Guerlain in N°77 van Guerlain (€ 16,90 en € 31,90)

Goed idee van Guerlain: je kan tegenwoordig navullingen kopen van zijn Rouge G-lipstick en die in hulsjes met verschillende prints stoppen. Beter voor het milieu, want je gebruikt de huls steeds opnieuw, beter voor je portemonnee want de navullingen zijn logischerwijs goedkoper dan een lipstick mét huls.

Deze zachtroze kleur staat ook mooi op je wangen.

ENGLISH PLEASE!

“I quite like the idea of one stop shopping, using one product in a multitude of ways,” says Val Garland, artistic director of the make-up at L’Oréal Paris. “Like using a foundation as a concealer as wel.”

Multitasking with your make-up is not a bad idea in these days of overconsumption and consumerism. (Plus, you can justify the price of your new expensive lipstick. “I know it’s expensive but I am using it as a blush, too!”) Some products are put on the market as handy multitaskers but your favourite lipstick or eyeshadow can do more than you think, too.

Lipstick as blush… 

(Brownish) pink or coral lipstick gives your cheeks a healthy glow. Apply some on the apples of your cheeks and blend with your fingers. Avoid matte lipsticks and glossy ones. Matte textures are too dry and may make your skin look dead, a too glossy finish gives a highlight effect.

If you have darker skin, you can experiment with bright(er) colours, if you are quite pale, you might want to stick to soft hues. If you want to go for a chic look, go matchy match and use the same colour on your lips and cheeks.

Or eye shadow 

“I like using the softly tinted lip conditioner of L’Oréal Paris’ Infaillible 24Hr Lipstick on the eyelids to create a glossy catwalk-like shine,” says Garland. Her tip is worth the try but just keep in mind that, if you have sensitive eyes, you might want to check whether the formula contains fragrance. Or menthol or peppermint extract or any ingredient that gives a fresh or tingling sensation. (You might want to avoid those anyhow as they tend to dry out skin and can irritate it.)

Cream blush on your lips

The other way around: apply cream blush on your lips for a very soft and subtle effect. Just keep in mind that blush formulas do not often contain hydrating ingredients, which a lipstick formula does.

Concealer as contour…

The concealer you use in summer does not match your skin tone in winter? Why not use it to contour? Apply a concealer in a colour that is two shades darker than your own skin under the cheekbones, next to your nose bridge, under your jawline… Wherever you want to shape your face. Blend the formule with a contour brush or your fingers.

Or eyeshadow primer 

Apply a long-wear concealer on your eyelids before using a powder eyeshadow.

Foundation as concealer

“You first apply the product with a brush all over the face and then use your fingers to dab on some more foundation on spots that need a bit more coverage,” says Garland.

Eyeshadow on your brows… 

A brown, matte eyeshadow powder works perfectly on your brows. Pick a colour that suits your eyebrows – one shade lighter is perfect – and fill them in with an eyebrow brush. You might want to use a transparant eyebrow gel to fixate the colour.

Or as a highlighter 

Soft pink and golden hues look pretty as a highlighter.

Bronzing powder on your eyes… 

It not only gives your cheekbones a sun kissed glow, bronzing powder looks great on your eyes, too. Whether it is matte or glittery. Simply apply with a fluffy eyeshadow brush for a sunny look.

Or as a contour

A matte – and matte only! – bronzing powder is great to contour your face.

Khôl as eye shadow

Use your favourite eye pencil to create a smoky eye. Draw a thick line in your lashes and smudge the colour upwards with a blending brush (or the tiny brush that comes with your pencil). This works best with a creamy formula.

Gloss as highlighter 

A subtle glow on your cheekbones is easily created with some transparant lip gloss. (You might want to avoid the really glittery ones unless you like an outer space shine.)

Lip pencil as lipstick

Creamy, hydrating lip pencils often do not need an extra layer of lipstick. Bonus: if you are allergic to fragrance, a pencil is a good replacement. Its formula is usually fragrance-free.

The golden hue or the one below can be used as a highlighter. The matte brown is good for drawing in your brows.

Hoola Benefit (34,68 €)

It has become more easy to find a matte bronzing powder but this classic is still one of the best out there. Looks very natural as a bronzer, works as a contour, too.

Teinte Idole Ultra Wear Stick in 202 Rosy Flush, Lancôme

A creamy blush stick that you can also use on your lips. And, why not, your eyelids? The formula is fragrance-free.

The iconic blush powder comes in a multitasking cream version, too. For lips, lids and cheeks. The big difference with the original powder: the cream has tiny shiny particles.

This hydrating foundation can be used as a concealer as well.

Lipliner Pencil in 07 Plum, Clarins (15,90 €) 

A lovely creamy lip pencil that makes lipstick unnecessary.

Garland uses the softly tinted lipbalm from the newly formulated Infaillible 24Hr Lipstick on lids for a shiny finish. The formula is perfumed.

Good idea from Guerlain: you can buy lipstick refills and put them in your favourite double mirror cap(s). Better for the environment and better for your wallet. This pink colour looks good on cheeks, too.
