Water against the sun

Een water dat je huid met een SPF30 tegen de zon beschermt, het klinkt wat tegenstrijdig. Maar ook als erg fijn om te smeren. Dat vraagt dus om een zonnige test.

Garnier en Vichy slaagden er allebei in een zonbeschermend water samen te stellen, geïnspireerd op de lichte texturen die Japanse vrouwen graag smeren. De bedoeling: vrouwen die niet houden van het (soms) plakkerige gevoel van een traditionele zonnecrème een alternatief bieden dat ze wél graag overvloedig en vaak smeren. Uit een studie uit 2010 onder 200 vrouwen bleek dat 1 op 3 zich slecht of helemaal niet tegen de zon beschermde omdat ze het in de eerste plaats vergat, maar ook omdat ze geen aangename textuur vond die ze graag wilde gebruiken.

Vichy belooft met zijn Idéal Soleil Solar Protective Water SPF30 (een SPF50 is waarschijnlijk (nog) niet mogelijk met zo’n vloeibare formule) een formule die op de huid smelt waardoor je haar niet voelt zitten. En veel hydratatie, wat een goed idee is aangezien de zon je huid uitdroogt. (Daarvoor moet glycerine, het achtste ingrediënt in de INCI-lijst, zorgen. Maar de formule bevat ook alcohol denat als elfde bestanddeel dat erom bekend staat de huid uit te drogen. Aangezien het ingrediënt zo ver in de lijst staat, zal dat uitdrogend effect niet zo erg groot zijn.)

De bi-fase formule bestaat deels uit olie en deels uit water. Beide delen hebben zonnefilters gekregen die tegen UVA, UVB en lange UVA beschermen. Je mengt ze goed voor gebruik en bij elke smeerbeurt verstuift de pompflacon één miljoen fijne druppeltjes op je huid. (Dat is 17 keer meer dan een klassieke spray, maar of je effectief méér product smeert dan met een gewone spray meldt het merk niet.)

Kiezen kan uit drie formules: een hydraterende met gefragmenteerd hyaluronzuur, eentje met plantaardig bètacaroteen die het bruiningsproces van je huid optimaliseert en eentje vol polyfenolen van blauwe bes ofte antioxidanten die vroegtijdige huidveroudering moeten helpen bestrijden.

Mijn vriend en ik testten Idéal Soleil Solar Protective Water Antioxidant SPF30 voor het eerst op een zonovergoten speelplaats tijdens het jaarlijkse schoolfeest van zijn dochtertje. De formule smeert erg makkelijk uit – als ze net verstoven is, ligt ze als waterdruppels op je huid – en je voelt haar inderdaad (haast) niet zitten. Als je over je huid wrijft, voel je wel dat er iets op zit, maar je hebt geen plakkerig gevoel. Op het einde van de dag zijn we, ondanks het gebrek aan schaduw, niet verbrand.

Ik vind de toevoeging van parfum jammer omdat ik allergisch ben aan linalool en de kans bestaat dat dat bestanddeel in het parfum zit, maar ook omdat je huid met geparfumeerde formules sneller (gevoelig) kan reageren in de zon. (Ongeparfumeerde zonnebescherming zou je voorkeur moeten krijgen, alleen vind je die niet vaak. Dat heeft dan weer te maken met de zogenaamde sensorialiteit van een product: je zou meer  of toch liever zonnecrème smeren als die lekker ruikt en fijn in gebruik is.) Ik ruik deze formule haast niet waardoor je je kan afvragen of de geur van oranjebloesem, perzik, vanille, tiaré en sandelhout wel nodig is. Maar mijn huid lijkt na twee dagen gebruik niet op het parfum te reageren: de grote eczeemplekken in mijn armplooien, veroorzaakt door een andere  zonnecrème, jeuken niet en worden niet groter.

Na een middagje sprayen hebben we wel wat product van de 200 ml verbruikt. De flacon is transparant zodat je goed kan zien wanneer je product haast leeg is. (Volgens sommige professionals stop je cosmetica best niet in een transparante verpakking omdat de formule kan reageren op daglicht.) Mocht je deze fles meenemen op een weekje strandvakantie, raad ik aan er minstens twee te kopen. Wat zonnebrand betreft gebruik je sowieso liever te veel dan te weinig.

Ik moet zeggen dat ik aangenaam verrast ben door de Solar Protective Water, ondanks de toevoeging van parfum, en dat deze spray deze zomer standaard in mijn handtas zit.

Water that protects your skin against the sun with an SPF30, it seems like an impossible thing. But also like something you would love to slap on. So I put it to the test.  

Garnier and Vichy managed to create a solar protective water, inspired by the light and fluid skincare textures Japanese women love to use. The goal: to give women (and men) who do not like the sticky feeling of a traditional sunscreen an alternative they do love to use often and plenty. A study from 2010 with 200 women pointed out 1 out of 3 did not protect herself against the sun or did not use enough protection because she forgot (!!!) but also because she could not find a pleasant texture she loved to use.

Vichy promises a formula that melts on your skin with its Idéal Soleil Solar Protective Water SPF30 – an SPF50 is probably not possible (yet) – so you get a naked skin sensation. And plenty of hydration, which is a good idea as the sun tends to dry out skin. (Glycerine, the 8^th ingredient on the INCI list has to provide the hydration. The formula also contains alcohol denat., which is said to dehydrate skin. It is the 11th ingredient on the list, so I am guessing the dehydrating effect will be minimal.)

The biphase formula consists of 50% oil and 50% water. Both parts have sun filters that protect skin against UVA, UVB en long UVA-rays. You mix them well before use. The pump sprays 1 million of fine drops on your skin every time you use it. That’s 17 times more than a regular spray but the brand does not mention whether it also means that you use more product than with a regular spray.

You can choose between three formulas: an hydrating one with fragmented hyaluronic acid, one with betacaroteen that gives the tanning process of your skin a boost and one full of blueberry polyphenols that have to help against skin ageing.

My boyfriend and I test the Idéal Soleil Solar Protective Water Antioxidant SPF30 at the yearly school festivities of his daughter’s school. In a sun drenched play yard without shady spots. The formula is very easy to apply: when you spray it on, it looks like water drops lying on your skin that you can quickly massage into skin. It is not sticky at all but leaves my skin feel hydrated and soft. At the end of the sunny day we did not get burned.

I think it is a pity that the brand added fragrance as I am allergic to linalool and there is always a chance the perfume contains linalool. Also because your skin can react to the sun when wearing scented formulas. (It is always best to opt for a fragrance-free sunscreen but you do not find those very often. Brands like to give their sunscreens a nice smell as they think you will more often liberally apply a product when you think it smells nice.) The fragrance of this water is hardly there so you could ask yourself whether it is really necessary to add the scent of orange blossom, peach, vanilla, tiare and santal wood. But my skin seems to be okay with the fragrance after 2 days of use: the eczema spots on my arms, caused by another sunscreen, do not itch and do not get any bigger.

After a sunny afternoon we have used up quite a lot of the 200 ml. The transparent bottle makes it easy to see when you should buy a new one. (Some beauty professionals claim you should not put skincare in transparent packaging as the formula can react to light.) If you plan on taking a bottle of this sunscreen with you on holiday, I suggest buying at least two. Better safe than sorry. Plus, you can never apply too much sunscreen.

All in all I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with this Solar Protective Water, even though it contains fragrance. This one will be in my bag during the summer at all times.
