Je zou willen dat de zomer nooit eindigt? Deze make-uplanceringen doen je misschien van gedachten veranderen en leren je de schoonheid van de herfst – en een frisse teint – appreciëren.

Er hangt al een week of twee verandering in de lucht: de ochtenden en avonden zijn koeler, de bomen beginnen te verkleuren, de dahlia’s staan in bloei, de winkeletalages tonen hoe leuk herfstmode kan zijn (opnieuw een sjaal dragen! En een gezellige, warme trui!), kinderen gaan maandag opnieuw naar school (een verademing voor véél ouders) en alles valt weer in zijn oude vertrouwde ritme.
Alles, behalve je make-uproutine, toch als je net zoals ik bent. De nieuwe make-uplanceringen zorgen er eind juni, wanneer de meeste merken hun nieuwe herfstlanceringen voorstellen, al voor dat ik zin krijg in herfst op mijn gezicht. Dit seizoen betekent dat beskleurige, matte lippen, een frisse, natuurlijke teint en taupe op de ogen.
Uit het ruime aanbod nieuwigheden liggen deze alvast klaar om te testen. (Sommige heb ik al geprobeerd.) De formules zijn, op twee producten na, parfumvrij aangezien ik allergisch ben aan linalool en toegevoegd parfum maar beter vermijd. Afschilferende beskleurige lippen zijn deze herfst nu eenmaal niet meteen een trend.
LIPPEN
Van boven naar onder:
Lo-Fi Lip Mousse in Halo en Echo van Urban Decay (€ 20, bij Ici Paris XL)
Deze potjes zien eruit als blush, maar hun bouncy, pigmentrijke, matte formule hoort thuis op je lippen (hoewel ze op je wangen ook niet zou misstaan). Aanbrengen met je vinger voor een kleurwaasje (en veel kleur op je vinger!), of met de bijhorende applicator voor een vol resultaat. De kleur brengt makkelijk aan en voelt glad op je lippen, met dank aan de siliconen in de formule. Ik droeg Halo één keer en moet het product dus nog verder testen. Maar de houdbaarheid is niet zo fantastisch: na een drankje moest ik het potje opnieuw bovenhalen. Dat kan overal, dankzij het ingebouwde spiegeltje en penseeltje. Handig voor in je handtas.
Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur Mat in 261 Excess en 257 Discrétion van Chanel (€ 36)
Chanel had al een jumbolippenpotlood, maar die had een eerder glossy finish. Lucia Pica, artistiek directeur van de make-up van het Franse modehuis, houdt het dit seizoen mat in haar herfstcollectie en stopte ondermeer een matte versie van Le Rouge Crayon in het gamma. Die is rijk gepigmenteerd en komt in mooie volle kleuren zoals we van Chanel gewoon zijn. (Excess is een warm frambozenrood, Discrétion een zachte nude.) Het potlood belooft een lange houdbaarheid, wat logisch lijkt aangezien mat nu eenmaal beter houdt dan glanzend. Het originele potlood blijft bij mij geen halve dag mooi op zijn plek zitten, maar vervaagt naar een zachte stain. Hopelijk houdt deze matte versie het wat langer vol (en droogt ze mijn lippen niet verder uit).
Rouge d’Armani Matte in 506 Maharajah en 102 Androgino van Giorgio Armani (€ 36)
Armani maakt doorsnee fantastische make-upproducten: de kleuren zijn vol en mooi gepigmenteerd, de houdbaarheid is erg goed, de packaging verfijnd. Met Lip Maestro had het merk al een erg goede matte lipstick, maar het voegt deze herfst een nieuwe optie – in een meer traditionele stick – toe aan zijn collectie.
Rouge d’Armani Matte belooft intense kleuren, een lange houdbaarheid én comfort, wat vaak ontbreekt in de doorsnee matte lipstickformule (hoewel dat de laatste jaren al sterk verbeterd is). Deze lipstick bevat 50% meer pigment dan een doorsnee lipstick (lees: nog meer kleur) en bestaat voor 25% uit een “lichtverspreidende gel” die het licht over de lippen verspreidt waardoor je een rijk soft focus-effect krijgt. Esteroliën en gehydrogeneerde jojobabolie zorgen ervoor dat de lipstick zacht en vlot over je mond glijdt en ze het lipoppervlak mooi opvult.
Ik droeg de rozige nude tint 500 Fatale (niet op de foto) voor een avondje Otomat en de kleur overleefde mijn Rock the Kasbah-pizza (foodietip!) goed, maar niet perfect. Bijwerken na je eten kan dus nodig zijn. De formule voelt aangenaam en soepel op de lippen, maar droogde de mijne wel een tikje uit. (Maar ik heb dan ook extreem gevoelige en snel uitdrogende lippen.)
Lip Maestro blijft wat mij betreft langer zitten, maar deze lipstick is voor veel vrouwen makkelijker in gebruik, want geen geknoei met een vloeibare formule. Ik kijk er in ieder geval naar uit om het mooie fuchsia Maharajah te testen, één van mijn favoriete Armanitinten.
OGEN
Van boven naar onder:
Kajal Ink Artist in Sumi Sky 07 van Shiseido (€ 26, vanaf september beschikbaar)
Dit is één van de leden van de nieuwe make-upfamilie van het Japanse cosmeticamerk. Je gebruikt dit dikke potlood als eyeliner of vervaagt het tot oogschaduw. De kleuren zijn intens, maar er zijn ook meer subtiele tinten.
Ik had graag het liquid liner-pennetje aan deze lijst toegevoegd, maar na die eyeliner vijf keer te hebben getest op vakantie, kan ik besluiten dat het gebogen pennetje handig is om een strak, net lijntje te trekken, maar dat de formule na een paar uur afgeeft waardoor het leek alsof ik boven mijn oogplooi zwarte oogschaduw had vervaagd. Hopelijk geeft dit potlood betere resultaten.
Stylo Ombre et Contour in 12 Contour Clair van Chanel (€ 33)
Hetzelfde principe als het Shiseidopotlood: dit matte oogpotlood gebruik je als khôl, liner of als oogschaduw. Dit bruinige taupe staat iedereen en zorgt, al dan niet gecombineerd met een zwart lijntje, voor een gesofisticeerde blik die overal bij past, van een zomerjurkje op een mooie nazomerdag over een casual t-shirt en jeans-combinatie tot een bruin ribfluwelen pak (erg trendy deze herfst).
Tussen haakjes: het Les 4 Ombres-pallet 308 Clair-Obscur van de herfstcollectie is een aanrader als je van subtiele bruintinten houdt. In tegenstelling tot andere oogschaduwpaletten ga je elk van de vier matte tinten gebruiken. De reden waarom ik het niet toevoeg aan deze lijst is omdat ik geen paletten gebruik, ik houd het liever bij oogschaduwsticks en vloeibare oogschaduw zoals het product hieronder.
Illumination Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow in 03 Nude Brown van Helena Rubinstein (€ 38, vanaf half september beschikbaar)
Helena Rubinstein komt eindelijk nog eens met nieuwe make-up: een nieuwe Lash Queen-mascara, waar het merk om bekend staat, nieuwe lipgloss (die mijn hart nooit sneller doet slaan) en deze liquid oogschaduw. Toegegeven, Rubinstein is wat in de vergeethoek terecht gekomen, toch zeker wat make-up betreft, en heeft misschien een wat oubollig imago omdat het merk zich lijkt toe te spitsen op de iets oudere vrouw die meer geld kan of wil besteden aan haar make-up en niet van trendy kleurtjes en leuke gimmicks houdt. Maar als je van een natuurlijke, softe make-uplook houdt, is deze oogschaduw misschien wel een aanrader.
Ik draag niet zo vaak oogschaduw, maar als ik het doe, wil ik een makkelijke formule die de hele dag egaal blijft zitten en niet in mijn oogplooi eindigt. Enter de liquid oogschaduw die opdroogt tot poeder en minstens tien uur perfect blijft zitten. Zowel Giorgio Armani als Yves Saint Laurent hebben vloeibare formules die aan die vereisten voldoen, vandaar dat ik high hopes heb voor deze. (De drie merken behoren tot dezelfde groep en kunnen elkaars research vaak inkijken.) Helena Rubinstein belooft alvast dat de kleur zestien uur (dat is van 7 tot 23u!) blijft zitten en mixt pigment met parelmoerdeeltjes en een beperkte hoeveelheid witte vulbestanddelen zodat de kleuren stralend blijven.
Qua kleur lijkt deze erg op die van Chanel, maar deze tint bevat parelmoerdeeltjes die voor een vleugje glans op je ooglid zorgen wat frisser oogt dan een puur matte kleur. Je brengt de kleur makkelijk aan met het sponsborsteltje, ik vervaag haar graag met mijn vinger voor een zacht(er) effect. Over de houdbaarheid kan ik me nog niet helemaal uitspreken aangezien ik de oogschaduw nog maar één keer snel heb getest, maar ze leek mooi te blijven zitten. Mag ook wel, aan die prijs.
Stylo 4 Couleurs in 02 van Clarins (€ 39)
Al eventjes een hype in het buitenland waar deze vier-in-éénpen al langer uit is. Die bevat drie tinten oogpotlood (zwart, bruin en grijs) en één rozenrood lippotlood die makkelijk over de huid glijden en goed blijven zitten. Ik nam dit potlood mee op vakantie – meer plek in mijn make-uptasje voor lipsticks – en was aangenaam verrast. De oogpotloden van Clarins zijn doorsnee erg goed en ook deze stellen niet teleur. Aan het einde van de dag is je lijntje vervaagd, maar je ziet het wel nog zitten en de kleur eindigt niet ergens samengeklit in je oogplooi. Ook een bonus: je hoeft de potloden niet te scherpen, simpelweg draaien aan de pen en er komt meer potlood uit.
Ook het lippotlood blijft goed zitten, maar haalt geen hele dag. Ik gebruikte het regelmatig als lipstick.
TEINT
Skin Illusion Natural Hydrating Foundation van Clarins (€ 42)
Clarins wordt vaak wat over het hoofd gezien als het op make-up aankomt, maar het Franse merk ontwikkelt erg goede oogpotloden, primers en foundations. De nieuwste aanvulling in die laatste categorie is deze serumachtige foundation die een naturel resultaat belooft.
Ik testte haar al één keertje en kan niet wachten om dat opnieuw te doen. Ik houd van vloeibare foundations – Maestro Fusion Makeup van Armani is één van mijn favorieten – omdat ik ze makkelijk vind om aan te brengen en om dekking op te bouwen. Skin Illusion gaf mijn huid een gezonde gloed en dekt behoorlijk in een kleine hoeveelheid. De SPF en pollutiebescherming zijn een fijne bonus.
Deze formule is trouwens geparfumeerd. Maar omdat ik in mijn gezicht nooit allergische reacties heb gehad en parfumloze foundation moeilijk te vinden is, neem ik het risico. Misschien vormen mijn serums en dagcrème wel een laagje dat als buffer werkt tussen mijn huid en de bestanddelen waarop ik reageer.
Precious Light Rejuvenating Illuminator in 1,5 van Guerlain (€ 45,50)
Deze highlighterpen kwam al uit in 2014 uit, ik denk dat 1,5 een nieuwe tint is. In ieder geval het proberen waard want deze pen belooft schaduwen en donkere kringen in je gezicht te verminderen, rimpeltjes op te vullen en je er uitgeslapen te doen uitzien. Zonder glitter.
Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush in Sonoya 01 van Shiseido (prijs niet meegedeeld)
Deze luchtige blush transformeert op de huid in een dun poederlaagje met een matte finish. (Er zitten wel fijne glansdeeltjes in de formule.) Met een beetje product krijg je al een mooi effect en het zachtroze zorgt bij iedereen voor een gezonde blos. Je brengt het makkelijk aan met je vingers. Bij mij blijft de blush jammer genoeg geen hele dag zitten, maar dat kan ik van weinig blushes zeggen.
Stylo Lumière Instant Radiance Booster Pen van Sisley (€ 47,50)
Een zacht kussentje, gevuld met een formule met blurdeeltjes en pigment die in één haal vermoeidheid en fijne lijntjes belooft weg te halen en schaduwen in je gezicht oplicht. Een soort highlighter, dus, maar dan zonder de glitter. Een erg dure highlighter, dat wel, maar het Franse cosmeticamerk stopte ook nog verzorgende bestanddelen in de formule waaronder hydraterend witte lelie-extract en haverzaadextract dat lijntjes zou gladstrijken. Ik ben benieuwd of dat prijskaartje gerechtvaardigd is.
Flash-Nude (Fluid) Pro-Perfection Tinted Fluid van Filorga (€ 36,90, vanaf oktober beschikbaar bij Ici Paris XL en bij de apotheek)
Het Franse merk lanceerde begin dit jaar een gladmakende primer en komt nu met een volledig teintgamma dat verzorging met make-up combineert: twee primers, deze fluïde foundation en een universeel poeder.
Net als die van Clarins belooft ook deze foundation een erg naturel resultaat. Je kan de formule mooi opbouwen zonder dat je een dikke laag op je huid ziet liggen. Hyaluronzuur helpt je huid vol houden, hexylresorcinol zou pigmentvlekken verminderen. De SPF30 beschermt tegen uv, niacinamide tegen pollutie.
Ook deze formule bevat parfum.
ENGLISH PLEASE!
You wish summer would never end? These make-up launches make it less hard to ease into autumn and make you appreciate the beauty of that season – and a fresh face.
You can feel the change in the air: mornings are crisp, the trees are starting to change colour, dahlias are blooming, shop windows display how fun autumn fashion can be (wearing a scarf again! And a warm, cosy sweater!), kids go back to school on Monday (such a relief for so many Belgian parents) and everything falls back into its usual rhythm.
Everything except for your make-up routine, that is if you are anything like me. I was already dreaming of matte berry lips, taupe eyes and a glowy, natural skin at the end of June, when most brands presented their new make-up launches. So I picked my selection of newbies to test. (Some of them I already tried and approved of.) The formulas are fragrance-free, apart from two products, as I have a linalool allergy and should avoid added fragrances in formulas. Peeling matte berry lips just aren’t that trendy.
LIPS
From top to bottom:
Lo-Fi Lip Mousse in Halo en Echo, Urban Decay (20 €, at Ici Paris XL)
These little pots look like blush but their bouncy, highly-pigmented contents belong on your lips. (You could however use them on your cheeks, too.) Apply the matte formula with your finger for a hint of colour – and loads of colour on your finger! – or use the built-in applicator for a full-on effect. The colour applies easily and feels smooth on your lips (thanks, silicones) but I do not find it that long-wearing. Reapplying after a drink or meal might be necessary. I put Halo on with my finger and had to reapply after a drink. It might stay on longer if applied with the brush, I need to check that. Handy to put in your handbag thanks to the built-in mirror and pencil, though.
Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur Mat in 261 Excess and 257 Discrétion, Chanel (36 €)
Chanel already has a chubby stick-like lip pencil but that one has a glossy finish. Lucia Pica, artistic director of the make-up of the French fashion house, kept the autumn collection matte, so added a matte version of Le Rouge Crayon. It is highly pigmented and comes in six rich and warm colours. (Excess is a warm raspberry red, Discrétion a soft nude.) The pencil promises to stay put for a long time, which seems logical as matte formulas tend to do so. The original Rouge Crayon does not survive half a day on my lips but turns into a faded stain so I am hoping this one stays put for a much longer time without drying out my (already dry) lips.
Rouge d’Armani Matte in 506 Maharajah and 102 Androgino, Giorgio Armani (36 €)
Armani does amazing make-up in general: its colour range is warm and vibrant, the formulas stay put a long time, the packaging looks chic and sleek. The brand already has a strong long-wear matte lipstick – Lip Maestro – but adds a new one in a traditional stick to its range.
Rouge d’Armani Matte promises intense colours, long-wear hold and comfort, which often lacks in matte lipsticks (even though they have become a lot more comfortable these past couple of years). This lipstick contains 50% more pigments than your average lipstick (so more colour) and consists for 25% of a “light spreading gel” that spreads the light over lips so you get a rich soft focus effect. Ester oils and hydrogenated jojoba oil make the lipstick glide smoothly over your mouth and fill up its surface.
I wore the pinky nude 500 Fatale (not in the picture) for a night out at Otomat and although the colour survived my Rock the Kasbah pizza (that’s a foodie tip!), I had to reapply it. There was still some colour left but it wasn’t as opaque as when I applied it. The formula feels smooth and pleasant on my lips but it did dry them out a bit. (But I have extremely sensitive and quickly dehydrated lips.) I think Lip Maestro stays put for a longer time than this lipstick but this one might be easier to apply for a lot of women as you do not have to tackle a liquid formula. I cannot wait to try the fuchsia Maharajah, as it is one of my favourite Armani shades.
EYES
From top to bottom:
Kajal Ink Artist in Sumi Sky 07, Shiseido (26 €)
This is one of the members of the new make-up family the Japanese cosmetics brand launched. You can use this thick eye pencil as eyeliner or simply smudge it into eye shadow. The colours are intense – one stroke equals bold colour – but you can choose more subtle shades, too.
I would have loved to add the liquid liner pen to this list but after testing it five times while on holiday, I have to conclude that the curved pen is handy to draw a thin, neat line but that the formula transfers to my eyelid after a couple of hours, making me look like I smudged some black eyeshadow above my crease. Not a good look. I hope this pencil leads to better results. It has the perfect colour for a sunny, summery September day.
Stylo Ombre et Contour in 12 Contour Clair, Chanel (33 €)
Just like Shiseido’s Kajal Ink Artist you can use this matte eye pencil as khol, eyeliner or eye shadow. The browny taupe is a one colour fits all that – whether or not combined with a black liner – makes you look sophisticated in a couple of seconds and goes with anything, from a casual t-shirt and denim look to a more dressed-up dress and heels one.
By the way: the Les 4 Ombres pallette 308 Clair-Obscur from the autumn make-up collection is perfect if you like subtle brown tones. Unlike other eyeshadow palettes you will probably end up using all four matte shades. I did not add it to this list as I tend to not use eyeshadow palettes and stick to handy pens and liquids. Like the next launch.
Illumination Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow in 03 Nude Brown, Helena Rubinstein (38 €, available from half September)
Helena Rubinstein is finally launching some new make-up products: there’s a new Lash Queen mascara, a new lipgloss (gloss just never gets my heart racing) and this liquid eyeshadow. True, Rubinstein is not the most exciting cosmetics brand out there and might have a bit of a dusty image as it tends to focus on the slightly older woman who can or wants to spend more money on skincare and make-up and stays far away from trendy colours and gimmicky products. If you like a natural, soft make-up look, however, you might want to give this eyeshadow a go.
I do not often wear eyeshadow but if I do, I want an easy formula that stays put all day long without smudging or ending up in the crease of my eye. Enter liquid eyeshadow that dries up into a powder on skin and stays put for at least ten hours straight. Both Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent do amazing liquid eyeshadows that tick all these boxes, which is why I have high hopes for this one. (The three brands belong to the same group and get to benefit from each other’s research.) Helena Rubinstein promises this formula stays on your lids for sixteen hours (that’s from 7 until 11 in the evening!) and mixes pigments with pearlescent particles and a limited amount of white fillers so colours stay vibrant.
This particular colour looks a lot like Chanel’s but its pearlescent particles give your lids a hint of shine. You can easily apply the colour with the sponge applicator, I like to then smudge it with my finger for a soft effect. I have only tried this eyeshadow once but it seemed to stay put fine. Which, given the price, is a good thing. (I need to try it a couple more times to decide on whether it gets a place in my make-up drawer or not.)
Stylo 4 Couleurs in 02, Clarins (39 €)
Three eye pencils (black, brown and grey) and one rosy red lip pencil in one handy pen. They glide over skin easily and stay put for quite a long time. I took this pencil with me on holiday – more space for lipsticks in my make-up bag! – and was pleasantly surprised. Clarins’ eye pencils are very good in general so I was pretty sure these would not let me down either. Your line will be faded by the end of the day but you will still see it is there and the colour does not end up somewhere past your crease. Another bonus: you do not have to sharpen these pencils, just turn the pen and you get more product.
The lip pencil is pretty good, too but does not stay put all day long. I used it as lipstick and had to reapply. (As you would with a regular lipstick, too.)
SKIN
Skin Illusion Natural Hydrating Foundation, Clarins (42 €)
Clarins is often overlooked when it comes to make-up but the brand does amazing eye pencils, primers and foundations. Its latest addition to the latter category is a very fluid foundation, like a serum, that promises a natural, barely there veil on your skin.
I tried it once already and cannot wait to use it again: I love a very fluid foundation – I adore Armani’s Maestro Fusion Makeup – as I find it easy to apply and to layer. This one left my skin looking healthy and glowy. The SPF and pollution protection are a nice bonus.
This foundation is not fragrance-free but as I never had any allergic reactions in my face and fragrance-free foundations are hard to find, I decided to give it a go. Maybe the layers of serums en day cream form a sort of protective layer between my skin and the ingredients I react to, too.
Precious Light Rejuvenating Illuminator in 1,5, Guerlain (45,50 €)
I am a bit confused as this highlighting pen was launched in 2014 but I think 1,5 is a new colour in the range. Anyway, it is worth putting it to the test as this tiny pen promises to erase shadows and dark circles in the face, fill up small lines and make you look awake. Without the glitter you normally expect in an illuminator.
Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush in Sonoya 01, Shiseido
This blush mousse transforms into a thin layer of powder with a matte finish on your skin. (There is a bit of shimmer though.) A little goes a long way and this soft pink makes anyone look healthy and glowy. I like the fact you simply apply it with your fingers. It does not stay put all day long on my cheeks, though, but which blush does that, really?
Stylo Lumière Instant Radiance Booster Pen, Sisley (47,50 €)
A soft cushion pen, filled with a formula with blurring elements and pigment that promises to make tiredness and fine lines disappear in one go and light up shadows in the face. A sort of highlighter, yes, but without the glitter. A very expensive highlighter, I know but the French cosmetics brand added nourishing ingredients to the formula like hydrating white lily extract and oat extract that is supposed to fill out fine lines. I am curious to see whether this product is really worth its price tag.
Flash-Nude (Fluid) Pro-Perfection Tinted Fluid, Filorga (36,90 €, available from October at Ici Paris XL and the pharmacy)
The French brand launched a primer early this year and is now adding another primer, a universal setting powder and this fluid foundation to create a complete range that combines skincare with make-up.
This fluid promises a very natural result: you can layer it if you want more coverage without it going cakey. Hyaluronic acid helps skin looking plump, hexylresorcinol is supposed to fade pigmentation spots. The SPF30 protects against uv, niacinamide against pollution.
This formula contains fragrance, too.
