Je bent allergisch aan parfum, of mijdt liefst van al geparfumeerde skincare en je bent een voorstander van goede budgetproducten? In de supermarkt en bij de kruidenier vind je tegenwoordig goede opties aan een lief prijsje.

De dermatoloog is duidelijk: je bent allergisch aan parfum en moet na de consultatie afscheid nemen van je favoriete producten en elke geparfumeerde verzorging mijden. Er zijn leukere mededelingen in het leven, maar het wordt gelukkig – iets – makkelijker om skincare te vinden die geen parfum bevat én een interessante INCI en een fijn prijskaartje heeft. Je hoeft er zelfs niet meer voor naar de apotheek.
Hoewel het soms wat zoeken is, vind je ook in de supermarkt en bij de drogist goede parfumloze alternatieven voor je naar bloemen geurende dagcrème. Die richten zich voornamelijk tot de gevoelige huid, maar de formules zijn vaak ook prima geschikt voor de droge tot normale huid. (Met een vettere huid is misschien wat meer voorzichtigheid geboden.)
Zo is het Britse skincaremerk Simple sinds kort beschikbaar bij Kruidvat. Het ontwikkelt eenvoudige, basic producten – what’s in a name? – voor de gevoelige huid. Die zijn vrij van onnodig parfum, kleurstoffen, alcohol, zeep en agressieve bewaarmiddelen. Jammer genoeg biedt Kruidvat maar een beperkte selectie uit het gamma gezichtsverzorging aan. Ik kocht in augustus een goede parfumloze deostick van het merk, die is bij ons bijvoorbeeld niet beschikbaar. Naast hydraterende dag- en nachtcrèmes en zachte reinigers zijn er ook twee sheetmasks, een skincarecategorie die vaak baadt in parfum.(Van € 3,49 tot € 9,99, bij Kruidvat.)
Kruidvat zelf biedt met zijn Skin Science Derma Sensitive-lijn érg betaalbare verzorging voor de gevoelige huid. Elk van de vier producten kost € 5,49 en bevat ectoin, Ecoskin en Defensil, bestanddelen die de verzwakte huidbarrière – het grote probleem van een gevoelige huid – moeten helpen versterken. De dagcrème doet zijn job prima: die hydrateert en houdt je huid zacht en soepel.
Mixa specialiseerde zich als budgetskincaremerk in de gevoelige en/of (erg) droge huid en verkoopt zijn vaak met La Roche-Posay-vergelijkbare formules in de supermarkt. Aangenaam smeren doe je ondermeer met zijn parfum- en bewaarmiddelloze Pro Tolérance-dagcrème voor de erg gevoelige huid (€ 10,99). Die dagcrème voor de intolerante, gevoelige, droge huid zit in een clevere pompflacon die bewaarmiddelen in de formule overbodig maakt.
Ook Sukin, het natuurlijke, vegan cosmeticamerk uit Australië, heeft een parfumloze lijn voor de eerder gevoelige huid. Daarin zit de Sensitive Calming Night Cream (€ 19,99, bij Holland & Barrett), een rijke nachtcrème voor de normale tot gevoelige huid. Komkommer en kamille helpen de huid kalmeren, rozenbottel-, teunisbloem- en borageolie beloven een meer elastische huid en diepe hydratatie. Er zit vanillin in de formule, wat voor een zachte koekjesachtige geur zorgt.
Nivea voegde dan weer een parfumloze, verzachtende dag- en nachtcrème toe aan zijn populaire antiageinglijn Q10 Power (€ 12,49/stuk). Die is bedoeld voor de gevoelige huid die snel last heeft van trekkerigheid en roodheden, maar beide formules lijken me ook prima anti-ageingcrèmes voor de droge tot normale huid. De dosis creatine in het volledige gamma werd bovendien tien keer verhoogd, waardoor de producten volgens Nivea rimpels nog efficiënter aanpakt.
Enkel beschikbaar in de apotheek, maar zeker het vermelden waard is Cerave, een Amerikaanse no-nonsense skincaremerk, ontwikkeld met en door dermatologen. Het richt zich vooral tot mensen die last hebben van een droge huid, atopisch eczeem en/of psoriasis met een uitgekiende mix van hyaluronzuur, glycerine, ceramiden en niacinamide die de huid een hele dag beloven te hydrateren en de huidbarrière helpen versterken. Maar er zitten ook producten in die perfect geschikt zijn voor de normale en vette(re) huid. Veel formules gebruik je zowel op lichaam als gezicht, maar er zijn ook specifieke dagcrèmes en een oogcrème. (Van € 4,95 tot € 17,95).

The dermatologist cannot make it any clearer: you are allergic to fragrance and have to go cold turkey, throwing out every fragranced skincare product you own and starting to use fragrance-free formulas. There are nicer things in life but it is starting to be – a bit – more easy to find skincare that does not contain any fragrance and has an interesting INCI and price tag. You do not even have to go to the pharmacy, either. Even though you may have to look around a bit and check the ingredient lists on every product, supermarkets and beauty chains nowadays do offer good fragrance-free alternatives for your day cream that smells like roses.
Take for instance British skincare brand Simple that has made the overseas journey to Belgium and is now available at Kruidvat. It offers simple, basic products – what’s in a name? – for sensitive skin. They are free from unnecessary fragrance, colorants, alcohol, soap and aggressive preservatives. Unfortunately, Kruidvat only offers a small selection of face care from the brand. (I bought the fragrance-free deodorant stick when on summer holiday in the UK but that one will not be available in our country.) You can choose from soft cleansers, day and night creams and a couple of sheet masks. (From 3,49 € to 9,99 €, at Kruidvat.)
Kruidvat itself also offers very budget conscious skincare for sensitive skin with its Skin Science Derma Sensitive range. Each of the four products cost 5,49 € and contains ectoin, Ecoskin and Defensil, a mix of ingredients that has to strengthen the weakened skin barrier, the big problem of sensitive skin. The day cream does what you expect from a basic day cream: it hydrates and keeps skin feeling soft and supple.
Mixa, the French budget skincare brand for sensitive skin, makes formulas that you can often compare to its more expensive pharmacy brand sister La Roche-Posay – both are part of the L’Oréal group. Its Pro-Tolérance Calming Cream (10,99 €) for intolerant skin comes in a handy tube that makes preservatives unnecessary.
Sukin, the natural, vegan cosmetics brand from Down Under, has a fragrance-free line for sensitive skin (but normal skin can use it, too). Its Sensitive Calming Night Cream (19,99 €, at Holland & Barrett) is a rich night cream for normal to sensitive skin. Cucumber and chamomile help soothe skin, rosehip, evening primrose and borage seed oil promise more elastic skin and deep hydration. The vanillin in the formula makes the cream smell like home baked cookies.
Nivea added fragrance-free, soothing day and night cream to its popular anti ageing range Q10 Power (12,49 € a piece). They were developed for sensitive skin that feels itchy and has some redness but both formulas seem perfect anti-aging creams for dry to normal skin to me. The German skincare brand has upped the creatine dose in its formulas so they tackle wrinkles even more efficiently.
Only available at pharmacies but worth the mention is Cerave, an American no nonsense skincare brand developed by dermatologists. It caters especially for people who suffer from dry skin, atopic skin and/or psoriasis with its intelligent mix of hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramids and niacinamide that promises to hydrate skin throughout the day and to help strengthen the weakened skin barrier. But some products are perfect for normal to oily skin, too. A lot of its formulas are suited for body and face but it also offers some day creams and an eye cream. (From 4,95 € to 17,95 €).
