6 fragrance-free lipsticks

Lipsticks zonder parfum zijn wat moeilijker te vinden dan hun geparfumeerde versie, maar ze bestaan. Het bewijs: deze zes exemplaren.

Color Riche-lipsticks hebben een vintage poedergeur, die van Maybelline ruiken naar (nogal synthetische) koekjes, die van Yves Saint Laurent naar watermeloen en die van M.A.C. staan gelijk met vanille… De meeste lippenstiften en glossjes bevatten parfum of aroma en dat mag fijn zijn voor de doorsnee make-upgebruiker, wie er allergisch aan is zoals ik (of het bestanddeel liefst vermijd omdat het het grootste allergeen is in cosmetica en niets toevoegt aan een product, behalve dat het lekker ruikt) ontdekt dat lipsticks zonder parfum een stuk moeilijker te vinden zijn. Maar ze bestaan!

In mijn zoektocht ontdekte ik dat vloeibare lipmake-up vaak vrij is van parfum, net als het doorsnee lippotlood (opgepast: Dior heeft een vloeibaar lippotlood waarin parfum zit) en “chubby” potloden, je weet wel, die Crayola-achtige dikke potloden die tussen een getinte lippenbalsem en lipstick in zitten.

Na drie jaar lang de INCI van elke nieuwe lipsticklancering te checken (en die van bestaande producten) heb ik een aardige collectie lipmake-up verzameld waarop mijn huid niet allergisch reageert. Ik vermijd persoonlijk naast het overduidelijke parfum/fragrance op de ingrediëntenlijst (daarin kan linalool zitten waaraan ik allergisch ben) ook “aroma”, vanillin (dat M.A.C-lipsticks bij voorbeeld naar vanillekoekjes doet geuren) en bestanddelen die zijn afgeleid van citrusvruchten (die zitten in ondermeer Jane Iredalelipsticks) omdat ik vermoed dat mijn lippen er niet van houden en er nog meer van gaan uitdrogen. 

Al die bestanddelen zitten alvast niet in onderstaande lipsticks. Nog meer ongeparfumeerde lipsticks vind je hier. (Opgelet: de PureMoist Lipstick van Jane Iredale bevat Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Wax, waarop ik – denk ik – reageer door mijn linaloolallergie, maar dat wist ik nog niet toen ik dat artikel schreef. Er zit namelijk een kleine hoeveelheid linalool in de olie die uit de vrucht wordt gehaald. Maar: dat betekent niet per se dat jij ook gaat reageren wanneer je allergisch bent aan parfum.)

ModernMatte Powder Lipstick in 516 Exotic Red en 525 Sound Check van Shiseido, €  28,50.

Deze matte lipstickformule voel je haast niet zitten en voelt comfortabel aan. Ze belooft 8 uur houdbaarheid en bestaat momenteel in 24 mooie kleuren, van fel tot nude. Begin volgend jaar wordt het kleurenpallet uitgebreid met ondermeer Sound Check, een mooi 60’s koraalnude, momenteel de kleur waarnaar ik grijp op lipstickdagen.

Rouge d’Armani Matte in 600 Attitude, 400, 506 en 500 van Giorgio Armani, € 36,90.

Het modehuis lanceerde deze matte lipstick vorig jaar in 15 rijke tinten. (Armani heeft altijd mooie kleuren.) De formule belooft comfort, maar mijn lippen zijn aan het eind van de dag toch wat extra uitgedroogd.  (Maar ik heb chronisch uitgedroogde lippen waartegen zelfs goede lippenbalsems niet meer voldoende helpen.)

Lip Magnet in 604 Nighttime, 302, 500 en 508 van Giorgio Armani, € 39,90.

Deze vloeibare textuur droogt op de lippen op tot een stain waarvan je haast vergeet dat ze op je mond zit en blijft dan érg lang zitten. Iets té goed zelfs: afhankelijk van de kleur blijven er kleurresten zitten nadat je je make-up hebt verwijderd met een reiniger, maar dat betekent ook dat deze met gemak een vijf gangendiner en een paar cocktails overleeft. Ze komt, zoals je verwacht van Armani, in erg mooie kleuren.

Dry Matte Liquid Lipstick in 04 Pop Diva van B.A.E., € 6, bij Hema.

Deze vegan formule is intens gepigmenteerd en belooft tot 8 uur te blijven zitten. Dat haal ik niet, na elke latte of lunch moet ik bijwerken. Minder goed dus dan de vloeibare lipstick van Bourjois, maar wél ongeparfumeerd, een grote bonus.

Rouge Graphist Intense Colour Lipstick Pencil in Draw It van Dior, 37,89 euro

Een limited edition die hopelijk aan de permanente collectie wordt toegevoegd. Dit jumbopotlood heeft een matte finish, een lange houdbaarheid en een formule die je haast niet voelt zitten, wat vrij uitzonderlijk is voor een crèmig potlood. Bestaat nog in drie andere tinten waaronder een mooi rood.

Plump & Glow Plumping Lip Gloss van Primark, € 6.

Zelfs als je geen fan bent van lipgloss (ik pleit schuldig) is dit een aangename formule die eerder aanvoelt als lippenbalsem dan als plakkerige gloss. Zonder zoet snoepgeurtje uiteraard. De universele nude staat iedereen en haalt het beste uit je natuurlijke lipkleur naar boven.

‘Lippenbalsembestanddelen’ Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, karitéboter, glycerine en hyaluronzuur in de formule moeten je lippen comfortabel en gevoed helpen houden. Wél jammer van de Menthyl Lactate, een afgeleide van menthol en het zesde bestanddeel in de INCI. Menthol (en afgeleide bestanddelen) zorgen in veel lipplumpers voor het plumpingeffect door je lippen lichtjes te irriteren waardoor ze wat gaan opzwellen en er dus voller uitzien. Ik vermijd het bestanddeel normaal gezien in make-up en skincare omdat het de huid uitdroogt en irriteert, maar dat gezegd, voel ik mijn lippen niet tintelen bij deze gloss en lijkt de formule mijn huid niet te irriteren. Maar: ik gebruik deze gloss niet vaak, bij dagelijks gebruik zouden mijn lippen misschien wel geïrriteerd raken, én ik draag er altijd lippotlood onder dat misschien een soort schild vormt tussen mijn huid en de gloss.

Het blijft jammer en wat bizar dat de gloss dit bestanddeel bevat, aangezien Alexandra Steinherr voor de rest géén essentiële oliën, parfum of andere irriterende stofjes in haar lijn voor Primark Beauty stopte. Meteen de reden waarom ik pas recent deze mentholafgeleide ontdekte, ik ging er vanuit dat ik de INCI niet uitgebreid hoefde te checken aangezien er sowieso geen linalool in zit.

Fragrance free lipsticks might be a bit harder to find than their fragranced counterparts but they do exist. Proof: these six lippies.

The vintage powder smell of Color Riche lipstick, the (a bit synthetic) cookie smell of Maybelline lipsticks, the watermelon smell of Yves Saint Laurent ones and the vanilla fragrance of M.A.C… Most lipsticks and lip glosses contain fragrance or aroma, which might be nice for the average consumer but if you are allergic to fragrance like me (or simply want to avoid it as it is the biggest allergen in cosmetics and only makes a product smell nice but does not add anything else to it), you quickly discover fragrance free lipsticks are a lot harder to find. But they do exist!

During my fragrance free quest I discovered liquid lip make-up is often free from fragrance, as is your average “chubby” lip balm meets lipstick hybrid and lip pencil that you can wear on its own instead of lipstick too. (Warning: Dior has a liquid lip liner pen that is fragranced, so always check the INCI before you buy a new lip pencil.)

After three years of checking the INCI of every single lip make-up launch (and those of already existing products) I have gathered quite a nice stash of lip make-up my skin does not react to. I personally not only avoid the very clear parfum/fragrance on the ingredient list but also “aroma”, “vanillin” (that makes M.A.C lipsticks smell like vanilla cookies for instance) and ingredients that are derived from citrus fruits (like in Jane Iredale lipsticks) as I suspect my lips do not like those ingredients either and get even more dehydrated when wearing them.

(Warning: Jane Iredale’s PureMoist Lipstick contains Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Wax, which I think I am allergic to as well but did not know yet when writing that article. The oil that is extracted from the fruit contains a small dose of linalool, which I am allergic to. But it does not mean your lips will react too if you are allergic to fragrance.)

ModernMatte Powder Lipstick in 516 Exotic Red en 525 Sound Check by Shiseido, 28,50 €.

This matte lipstick formula feels so lightweight you’d forget you’re wearing an opaque layer of colour on your lips and feels pretty comfy, especially for a matte lipstick formula. It promises to stay put for 8 hours and comes in 24 pretty colours, from bright in your face colours to subtle nudes. More colours will be added next year, like the pretty 60’s coral nude Sound Check that quickly became the colour I grab when I am wearing lipstick these days.

Rouge d’Armani Matte in 600 Attitude, 400, 506 en 500 by Giorgio Armani, 36,90 €.

The fashion house launched these matte lipsticks in 15 gorgeous colours – Armani always does amazing colour – last year. Their formula promises to keep lips comfortable but mine are always a bit extra dehydrated by the end of the day when I am wearing one of these. (But I have chronically dehydrated lips, no matter what lip balm I use.)

Lip Magnet in 604 Nighttime, 302, 500 en 508 by Giorgio Armani, 39,90 €.

Another one by Armani! This liquid texture dries up on your lips to become a stain and stays put for eternity, or so it seems: depending on the colour you use, you can still see some colour on your lips after taking your make-up off with a cleanser. That also means your lipstick easily survives a five course dinner and some cocktails. Again: very pretty colours, because: Armani!

Dry Matte Liquid Lipstick in 04 Pop Diva by B.A.E., 6 €, at Hema.

A vegan, intensely pigmented formula that promises 8 hours of wear. I have to reapply after every latte or lunch though. It is not as good as Bourjois’ liquid lipstick but it has no fragrance, so bonus points.

Rouge Graphist Intense Colour Lipstick Pencil in Draw It by Dior, 37,89 €

I hope this limited edition gets added to the permanent collection: this chubbyesque pencil has a matte finish, stays put for a long time and feels light as a feather on your lips, which I find exceptional for a creamy pencil texture. There are three other colours to choose from, one of them a very pretty red.

Plump & Glow Plumping Lip Gloss by Primark, 6 €.

Even if you are not a lip gloss fan – that’s me! – this is a comfy formula that feels more like a lip balm than a sticky gloss.  (And it smells not like sickly sweet candy of course like so many glosses do.) The universal colour is supposed to suit everyone and give you a your lips but better colour.

It contains Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, shea butter, glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which I think are nice ingredients to put into lip make-up as they nourish your lips and keep them comfortable. However, it also contains Menthyl Lactate – derived from menthol, an ingredient that plumps your lips by irritating them slightly so they swell up a bit.

I always avoid menthol in lip (or skincare) products as it is known to dry out and irritate skin but I have to say I did not notice any tingling effect that gives away the “plumping effect” in most lip plumpers with this lip gloss. The Menthyl Lactate does not seem to irritate my lips that much. But: I do not wear this gloss that often – I think you might want to avoid wearing it daily – and I always wear lip pencil underneath, which may act like a barrier between the gloss and my lips, who knows.

I just find it bizarre Alexandra Steinherr added this ingredient to the gloss as she very consciously avoided essential oils, fragrance and other irritating skincare ingredients in her range for Primark Beauty. Which is the reason why I only recently discovered the Menthyl Lactate, I just assumed I would not need to worry about checking the INCI in depth.
