4 zero waste beauty products that make it easy to switch to a more sustainable beauty routine

Was een duurzamere badkamerroutine één van je goede voornemens dit jaar? Maar je hebt geen idee waar te beginnen? Deze vier producten maken de overstap naar zero waste beauty alvast héél makkelijk.

Ruil je je oude vertrouwde fles shampoo in voor een solide exemplaar, bespaar je vier plastic flacons. (Een shampoobar gaat normaal gezien veel langer mee dan een vloeibare formule.) Wegwerpwatjes (of nog erger: reinigende doekjes) inruilen voor herbruikbare en er belanden jaarlijks per persoon gemiddeld 1.500 watjes niet in het afval. Beeld je in wat dat zou betekenen, mochten veel meer mensen overschakelen op zero waste beautyproducten.

Ik testte deze vier producten en ben ervan overtuigd dat je het verschil met hun klassieke tegenhanger niet zal opmerken, de extra plek bij het PMD en restafval misschien wél.

Ultra Doux Shampoo Bar Honing van Garnier, € 6,99.

Fijn om te zien dat Garnier steeds meer de kaart van duurzame beauty speelt met ondermeer navullingen voor zijn populaire Ultra Doux-shampoos, wasbare watjes en deze solide shampoo. (Ik dénk dat die laatste de eerste shampoo bar is van een groot traditioneel merk.)

Je hebt nooit eerder een shampoo bar geprobeerd omdat je schrik hebt dat je haar niet even schoon zal aanvoelen als met je vertrouwde vloeibare formule? Die van Ultra Doux bewijst het tegendeel. Je wrijft hem nat over je haar en er ontstaat een rijk schuim dat makkelijk uitspoelt, wat niet van elke vaste shampoo kan worden gezegd. Garnier werkte bovendien aan een formule die snel uitspoelt zodat je minder water verbruikt in de douche.

Mijn haar voelt na gebruik zacht en luchtig aan, zelfs zonder conditioner. Mijn enige puntje van kritiek: de shampoo is stevig geparfumeerd en doet niet alleen mijn haar een paar dagen honingachtig ruiken, maar ook onze badkamer, telkens de shampoo bar ligt op te drogen.

(Tussen haakjes: de formule is dus geparfumeerd. Linalool wordt niet vermeld op de INCI, wat nog niet automatisch betekent dat het bestanddeel niet in de shampoo zit, maar sowieso wél onder een bepaald percentage. Ik mag deze eigenlijk niet gebruiken door mijn allergieën, maar deed het uit te grote nieuwsgierigheid toch.)

Solid Shaving Bar van Lamazuna, € 12,50.

Je krijgt geen schuimovervloed zoals bij een bus traditioneel scheerschuim, maar deze bar over je natte huid wrijven en hij vormt een melkachtig laagje waarover een scheermesje vlot glijdt. Biologische karitéboter belooft de huid te voeden terwijl je scheert.

Deze bar doet wat ie belooft, maar ik vraag me af of je ook geen blok lichaamszeep kan gebruiken om je benen te scheren. Heb je nog een (zero waste) cosmeticaproduct uitgespaard.

Le Papier Matte Lipstick in Classy van Beauty Made Easy, € 13,95, in de (online) apotheek en de natuurwinkel.

Je pelt de buitenkant van deze matte lippenstift af via het koordje zodra de punt niet meer scherp genoeg is. Tot er enkel een stompje overblijft, in plaats van een lege (plastic) lipstickhuls. Clever, toch?

Mijn bevindingen: een mooie, rijk gepigmenteerde rode kleur, een comfortabel aanvoelende, voedende formule met kokos- en zonnebloemolie en karitéboter en een vrij goede houdbaarheid. Na de lunch moet ik wel bijwerken.

Het merk heeft ook getinte lippenbalsems en lipsticks met een meer glanzende finish. Zonder aroma’s of parfumbestanddelen.

Wasbare wattenschijfjes, € 18, via Things by Dings.

Ik gebruik al jaren herbruikbare wattenschijfjes en tot nu toe zijn deze dunne exemplaren uit bamboe en katoen de beste om mascara en andere oogmake-up te verwijderen met je gebruikelijke oogmake-upremover. (Andere opties zijn vaak te dik waardoor je iets te lang moet wrijven, wat niet fijn is voor de tere oogzone, en dan nog niet zeker bent dat je élk mascararestje hebt verwijderd.)

Wassen op 40°C, zonder wasverzachter, erna niet in de droogkast stoppen en ze gaan jaren mee, geloof me. (Natuurlijk worden ze wat grauwer van kleur, zeker wanneer je waterproof mascara en eyeliner verwijdert, maar dat stoort me absoluut niet.)

Ter info: ik kreeg deze wattenschijfjes cadeau bij een beautylancering, de schijfjes die Things by Dings verkoopt zijn volgens mij dezelfde, met de licht exfoliërende (die met het groene randje) als extra.

Do you want a more sustainable beauty routine but you do not know where to start? These four products make the switch incredibly easy.

If you swap your trusted bottle of shampoo for a solid shampoo bar, you skip using four plastic bottles. (A bar tends to last for a longer time than a liquid shampoo.) Switching from cotton pads (or horrible cleansing wipes) to washable make-up pads means the average person will not throw away 1.500 cotton pads a year. Just imagine what it would mean if more people switched to zero waste cosmetics. Pretty impressive, right?

I tested these four beauty products and am convinced you will not notice the difference between them and their classic packaging brothers. But you will save some space in your garbage.

Ultra Doux Shampoo Bar Honey by Garnier, 6,99 €.

It is good to see a big brand like Garnier going for more sustainable options: it launched refills for its popular Ultra Doux shampoos, reusable cotton pads and solid shampoo last year. (I think it is the first bar by a ‘traditional’ beauty brand.)

Are you afraid to try a solid shampoo because you think it will not clean your hair as well as a regular one? This Ultra Doux bar proves it is just as nice and easy to use as a normal shampoo. You massage it into your wet hair so you get a nice and rich foam that easily rinses out. Garnier even made sure the formula rinses out quickly so you waste less water in the shower.

My hair feels soft and airy after using this shampoo, even without a conditioner. (Which cannot be said of every shampoo bar out there.) My only point of critique: the bar is quite heavily fragranced, making my hair smell honey-like for a couple of days and even perfuming the bathroom while the wet shampoo bar dries up.

(By the way: the formula is fragranced but linalool is not mentioned on the INCI. That does not automatically mean it is not used in the shampoo. However, if it is being used, there is only a small dose in the formula that the brand need not mention from EU law but that you could react to if you are allergic to it. So I should not be using this due to my allergies but I did because I was too curious to try it out.)

Solid Shaving Bar by Lamazuna, 12,50 €.

This solid bar does not create the rich foam you get from a traditional shaving foam but it does leave a milky layer on your skin that makes it easy to shave. Organic shea butter promises to nourish skin while you shave.

This shaving bar does what it says but I do wonder whether you could not use a solid body soap instead, thus saving on yet another (zero waste) beauty product.

Le Papier Matte Lipstick in Classy by Beauty Made Easy, 13,95 €, at the (online) pharmacy and at organic stores.

You gradually peel off this matte lipstick as you use it, ending with a little stump instead of an empty (plastic) lipstick case. Pretty clever, right?

This lipstick has a richly pigmented red colour, feels comfortable and nourishing on my lips (thanks to coconut and sunflower oil and shea butter) and stays put pretty well. I have to reapply it after lunch but I have to with most lipsticks.

The brand also offers tinted lip balms and lipsticks with a more glossy satin finish. Free from aromas and fragrance to boot, which is interesting if, like me, you are allergic to those.

Reusable make-up pads, 18 €, via Things by Dings.

I have been using reusable make-up pads for years now and so far, these thin ones from bamboo and cotton are the best ones to remove mascara. Other ones tend to be too thick, which makes it hard to get every scrap of mascara off without rubbing your eyes until your skin turns red.

If you wash them at 40°C (no laundry softener) and do not dry them in the tumble drier, you can use these for years, trust me. (They do not stay bright white, especially not if you use waterproof make-up but I do not mind that at all.)

Good to know: I got these make-up pads as a gift from a beauty brand. But the pads Things by Dings sells are identical (I think), apart from the lightly exfoliating ones with the green rim.
