Holiday make-up

Je moet je prioriteiten stellen. Slim make-up inpakken betekent méér plek in je koffer voor souvenirs. Of een extra badpak of een vierde paar sandalen.

In je badkamer heb je het elke ochtend maar voor het grijpen en kunnen er makkelijk tien producten op je gezicht belanden, op vakantie heb je een – hopelijk – verstandige selectie gemaakt en ga je back to basics. Als je dat een beetje slim aanpakt, hoeft dat helemaal niet saai te zijn. Met de juiste zweet- en smeltproof formules, felle lipkleurtjes, multitaskers en een goede mascara kom je al een heel eind. Dat bewijzen deze vier make-uptasjes voor vier types.

Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF35 van Glossier (€ 21,52)

Eén van de bestsellers van het cultmerk en dat valt volledig te begrijpen. De gelachtige textuur voelt bijzonder aangenaam en licht en smeert vlot uit. Je kan er makkelijk foundation en concealer over aanbrengen, mocht je dat willen, zonder dat die na een uurtje van je huid glijdt of eraf rolt. Antioxidanten waaronder broccoli en vitamine E helpen de schade die de zon en andere omgevingsfactoren aanrichten beperken. Olie van zoete sinaasappelschil zorgt voor een lekker, subtiel geurtje, er werd dus geen parfum toegevoegd aan de formule.

Het enige nadeel: je moet een citytrip L.A. of NYC boeken (of iemand die naar één van die steden trekt lief vragen of hij/zij de Glossier Showroom-chaos wil trotseren en je bestelling wil meebrengen.) Er bestaan truukjes om de producten toch in België te laten leveren, maar officieel shipt het merk naar Canada, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Zweden en Ierland. België volgt (waarschijnlijk) in de (niet zo heel verre) toekomst.

Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in 551 Watermelon van Dior (€ 32,90)

Deze inkt hult je lippen in een extreem fijn laagje kleur dat erg lang blijft zitten zonder dat je het voelt zitten. Wel jammer dat er, zoals in – gokje – 94% van de lipstickformules, parfum in zit.

High Impact Lash Elevating Mascara van Clinique (€ 23,50)

De formule is niet waterproof, maar belooft wel een hele dag mooi te blijven zitten zonder vlekken of klonteren. Polymeren krullen de wimpers (hoef je je wimpertang niet mee te nemen!) en houden die krul de hele dag vast. Ook als je wimpers van nature niet stokstijf naar voren staan, geeft deze mascara toch een indrukwekkend effect.

Chic in the city

Mooie teint + felle lip + vleugje kleur op de ogen = ideaal op citytrip

Sun Sensitive Delicate Fresh BB Cream Tinted Finish SPF50 van Lancaster (€ 28)

Lancaster stopte een getinte SPF50 in zijn nieuwe gamma voor de zongevoelige huid. De formule beschermt, net als alle andere zonbescherming van het merk, tegen uv, infrarood en zichtbaar licht die allemaal effect hebben op huidveroudering. Het Sensiboostcomplex boost de weerbaarheid van de huid. Het toegevoegde parfum – de formule ruikt zonder naar het schijnt vreselijk – is hypoallergeen.

Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur in n° 17 A la rosée van Chanel (€ 36)

Een vrolijk koraalroze mond staat altijd mooi in de zomer. Deze crèmige textuur blijft tot vier uur zitten, voelt erg comfortabel aan op de lippen en leent zich ook goed tot blush.

Colour Chameleon in Smoky Emerald van Charlotte Tilbury (€ 25, o.m. bij de Bijenkorf)

Een streepje potlood en je creëert overdag een cateye, streepje vervagen en je hebt ‘s avonds een snelle smoky eye die je qua intensiteit goed kan opbouwen. Bonus: deze formule blijft erg lang zitten zonder vervagen (als je oogleden niet vettig zijn, best geen concealer of primer onder aanbrengen dus).

Total Temptation Mascara van Maybelline (€ 14,99)

De formule werd verrijkt met kokosboter voor meer comfort en belooft volume.

Accord Parfait Concealer van L’Oréal Paris (€ 13,99)

De fijne textuur blendt makkelijk met de huid en kan je mooi opbouwen tot je de juiste dekking hebt. Wel fixeren met wat (transparant) poeder voor het langst houdende resultaat. Ik gebruik op warme dagen enkel deze concealer waar nodig, poeder af en klaar.

Mag het wat meer zijn?

Handige palletjes en twee-in-éénproducten voor wie echt niet zonder make-up kan.

Wonder’fully Real Mascara with Keratin in Extreme Black van Rimmel London (€ 14,99)

De formule belooft lengte en een intens zwarte kleur. Keratine moet je wimperhaartjes verzorgen.

Snap Happy Makeup Kit van Jane Iredale (€ 59)

Een bijna volledige, minerale make-uproutine in één handig limited edition-palletje: drie tinten oogschaduw, een zachtroze blush (die je ook op je ogen kan gebruiken) en een gezichtspoeder.

Dual-Ended Long-Wear Liquid Liner van Bobbi Brown (€ 34)

Twee bruine liquid liners in één tube: de ene is metallic, de andere niet. Beide blijven de héle dag perfect zitten. Handige penseeltjes ook, waarmee je erg fijn kunt werken.

Master Camo Colour Correcting Concealer Palette in 02 Medium van Maybelline (€ 15,99)

Twee correctors, twee concealers en twee highlighters in één doosje voor wie echt niet zonder kan. De crèmige formules – geen uitloopgevaar in je bagage dus – werk je makkelijk uit met je vingers – of met het bijgeleverde penseeltje – en blijven lang zitten.

Alles voor een uitgebreide make-up in handige packaging die niet kan uitlopen en waarvoor je geen penselen nodig hebt.

Insta Duo Contour Stick in Light van Rimmel London (€ 9,99)

De ene kant is een contourstick, de andere een highlighter. Aanbrengen, blenden met de vingers, klaar.

Infaillible Longwear Shaping Stick in 160 Sand van L’Oréal Paris (€ 14,99)

Met één à twee tinten donkerder dan je eigen huid contour je, maar je gebruikt deze stick – in de juiste kleur – ook als gewone foundation. De crèmeformule blendt mooi met de huid en blijft, als alle andere Infaillible-formules, lang zitten.

Guipure Apricot Cheek & Lip Tint van & other stories (€ 15)

Abrikoos geeft je lippen en wangen een vleugje kleur.

Naked Petite Heat van Urban Decay (€ 32, bij Ici Paris XL)

Het originele oogschaduwpallet werd gehalveerd zodat het in je make-uptasje (en handtas) past. Met de zes warme tinten (vijf matte die je ook als liner kan gebruiken, één halfmatte die ook als highlighter werkt) creëer je zowel zachte als opvallende looks. Wel jammer dat het penseel van het grote pallet er niet bij zit en dat de originele prijs (€ 55) niet gehalveerd werd.

Dark Magic Instant Dramatic Volume van Max Factor (€ 19,99)

De naam is indrukwekkender dan het uiteindelijke resultaat, maar deze mascara creëert wél een mooi, naturel volume en meer lengte.

Gimme Brow in 5 van Benefit (€ 27,04, bij Galeria Inno of via benefitcosmetics.com)

Even door je wenkbrauwen met het borsteltje en je geeft ze net dat tikje meer kleur en diepte. Ik ga graag heen en weer met het borsteltje voor meer effect en leg mijn wenkbrauwhaartjes daarna opnieuw mooi in de plooi.

You have to know your priorities. Clever make-up packing means you have more space left in your luggage for souvenirs. Or an extra bathing suit or a fourth pair of sandals.

Getting ready in your bathroom every morning is easy: you just grab whatever you need/want to use, ending up with ten products on your face. It is different when you are on holiday and had to make a – hopefully – smart selection, going back to basics. If you are a clever packer, back to basics does not mean boring. You can do a lot with the right sweat and melt-proof formulas, bright colours for your lips, handy multitaskers and a good mascara. The proof: these four make-up bags for four different types (of holiday).

Pretty basic

Sunscreen + curled lashes + pink lips = the perfect look on laid back summer (holiday) days

Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF35, Glossier (21,52 €)

I get why this is one of the cult brand’s bestsellers. The light gel-like texture feels incredibly nice on your skin and is quickly absorbed. You can use foundation and concealer on top, if you like, without it gliding or peeling off. Antioxidants like broccoli and vitamin E help restrict the damage caused by the sun and other free radicals causing things. The formula is fragrance-free (great!) but sweet orange peel oil gives it a subtle, nice smell.

The only downfall: you have to book a trip to L.A. or NYC or ask someone visiting those cities if (s)he wants to brave the Glossier showroom madness to buy some goodies. The brand also ships to Canada, the UK, Sweden and Ireland, Belgium will – probably – follow in the (near) future.

Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in 551 Watermelon, Dior (32,90 €)

This ink gives your lips an intense layer of color that stays put for a very long time without you realizing you are wearing anything on your lips. A pity it contains fragrance, though, as does – I am guessing – 94% of all lipstick formulas.

High Impact Lash Elevating Mascara, Clinique (23,50 €)

The formula is not waterproof but does promise to stay put all day long without clumping or staining. Polymers curl the lashes – so you can leave your eyelash curler at home – and hold the curl all day long. Even if you have a natural curl in your lashes, this mascara will impress.

Chic in the city

Even skin tone  + bright lip + hint of colour on the eyes = ideal on citytrip

Sun Sensitive Delicate Fresh BB Cream Tinted Finish SPF50, Lancaster (28 €)

Lancaster put a tinted SPF50 in its new range for sun sensitive skin. The formula protects against uv, infrared and daily light rays that all affect skin ageing. The Sensiboost complex boost skin’s natural resilience. The added fragrance – the formule smelled really bad without, apparently – is hypoallergenic.

Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur in n° 17 A la rosée, Chanel (36 €)

A bright coral pout brightens up any summer day. The creamy texture stays put up to four hours (not bad for a chubby stick-like formula), feels very comfortable and can be used as a blush, too.

Colour Chameleon in Smoky Emerald, Charlotte Tilbury (25 €, at de Bijenkorf)

You can use this eye pencil to create a cat eye or smudge it for a quick smoky eye. Bonus: the formula stays put without fading or creasing (just make sure your eyelids are grease-free, so no need for concealer or a primer underneath).

Total Temptation Mascara, Maybelline (14,99 €)

The formula is enriched with coconut butter for more comfort and promises volume.

Accord Parfait Concealer, L’Oréal Paris (13,99 €)

The fine texture is very easy to blend and you can easily build up its coverage. Setting it with powder is a good idea to make it stay put even longer. I like using this and only this concealer where needed on hot days when I cannot be bothered using concealer, foundation, highlighter, bronzer and blush.

When you want more

Handy palettes and two-in-one products for when you just cannot go without make-up but want to keep your make-up bag as light as possible.

Wonder’fully Real Mascara with Keratin in Extreme Black, Rimmel London (14,99 €)

This formula promises length and an intense black colour. Keratine is supposed to treat and nourish your eyelashes.

Snap Happy Makeup Kit, Jane Iredale (59 €)

A nearly full-on, mineral make-up routine in one handy limited edition palette: a pretty eyeshadow trio, a soft pink blush – you can also use on the eyes – and a finishing powder.

Dual-Ended Long-Wear Liquid Liner, Bobbi Brown (34 €)

Two brown liquid liners in one tube: one is metallic, the other one is not. For a cateye that stays perfect all day long. The fine applicators make it very easy to create a thin, precise line.

A nice apricot to give lips and cheeks a hint of healthy colour.

Naked Petite Heat, Urban Decay (€ 32, at Ici Paris XL)

The cult palette was halved so it can easily fit into your travel make-up bag. The six warm hues – five matte ones you can use as a liner, too, and one semi-matte one that doubles as a highlighter – are perfect to create soft or more outspoken eye make-up looks. It is a pity it does not come with a brush and that the brand did not half the price of the original palette (55 €).

Dark Magic Instant Dramatic Volume, Max Factor (19,99 €)

The name is more impressive than the actual IRL result but this mascara does create natural-looking volume and length. For a pretty, natural effect.

Gimme Brow in 5, Benefit (27,04 €, at Galeria Inno or on benefitcosmetics.com)

Swipe the brush through your eyebrows for a bit more colour and volume. I like to sweep it back and forth for a deeper colour result, ending by putting the eyebrow hairs back in place.
