Je zou liefst van al op vakantie vertrekken zonder de week/dag/avond voor je vertrek te moeten inpakken? Deze tips en producten maken het in je gehuurde badkamer alvast aangenaam.

De ene maakt een week op voorhand al een nauwkeurig lijstje dat hij/zij keurig afvinkt, de andere propt de avond voordien snel wat kledij en skincare in een koffer. De ene neemt voor de zekerheid de halve badkamer mee, de andere houdt het basic, maar blijkt bij aankomst de belangrijkste producten vergeten te zijn.
Geregeld voor een (paar) nachtje(s) op perstrip gaan heeft van mij een – denk ik – vrij clevere, met een minimum aan skincareproducten reizende vrouw gemaakt. Ik houd het basic, maar zorg ervoor dat mijn huid en die van mijn reisgenoten niets te kort komt. Dankzij deze vier regels:
- Vertrouw op handige multitaskers
Onontbeerlijk in je badkamer, op reis en liefst ook in je handtas: crèmes/balsems die helpen bij droge lippen, pijntjes, nagelriemen, droge vlekken, irritaties, wondjes, muggenbeten… Het parfumloze Cicalfate van Avène is een klassieker uit de apotheek en hielp bij mij onlangs in enkele dagen gescheurde mondhoeken genezen. Wie liever geen petrolatum of minerale olie smeert, kan voor een natuurlijke formule als de parfumloze Paw Paw Ointment van Sukin gaan. Slechts negen ingrediënten waaronder ricinusolie, carnaubawas en papaja-extract beloven de huid te kalmeren en te voeden.
Ook het Grape Water van Caudalie zit standaard in mijn toilettas: het water verfrist op hete dagen, maar kalmeert de huid ook als je bijvoorbeeld iets te lang in de zon hebt gezeten of je huid ergens slecht op reageert.
Handig als je met (kleine) kinderen reist of naar een festival gaat waar douchen vaak geen prioriteit is: de Free From Wish-a-Wash Wet Wipes van Beauty Kitchen (€ 9,99 voor 20 doekjes, bij Holland & Barrett). Ik heb het normaal gezien helemaal niet voor reinigende doekjes wegens (meestal) onvoldoende reiniging en bovendien erg vervuilend, maar deze natuurlijke, parfumloze doekjes zijn composteerbaar. (Beauty Kitchen merkt op dat bio-afbreekbaar niet voldoende is. Het kan jaren duren voor een bio-afbreekbaar doekje is afgebroken.) Deze doekjes zijn handig om onderweg vuile handjes en gezichten een snelle poetsbeurt te geven. (Je kan de doekjes makkelijk afscheuren om ze kleiner te maken zodat je niets verspilt.) Daarna gooi je ze liefst bij het GFT-afval.
2. Ga voor travel-size.
Een binnenkopper: travel-size producten besparen plaats in je bagage en je komt er makkelijk twee weken – of langer – mee toe. Houd staaltjes van je favoriete producten bij (vraag er gerust naar als je afrekent in de parfumerie) of sla een voorraadje in van de mini’s die veel merken van hun bestsellers verkopen.
Ik bewaar in de badkamerkast een grote voorraad travelsized doucheproducten en skincare – laat ons zeggen dat we érg lang op vakantie kunnen voor we zonder zitten – en een setje lege travelflacons die ik vul met mijn allergieproof producten. (Zo’n setje koop je ondermeer bij Hema.)
Goed voor je lichaam én het milieu zijn de I love my Planet Concentrated Shampoo (€ 3,95) en Concentrated Shower Gel (€ 3,95) van Yves Rocher. Met die eerste was je dertig keer je haar, met die tweede neem je veertig keer een douche. (Een koopje dus, aan die prijs.) De formules zijn kort, correct en sls-vrij. Door de geconcentreerde formules in kleinere flacons te stoppen bespaart het merk ook respectievelijk 39% en 50% CO2 en plastic, vergeleken met een gewone flacon van zijn shampoo en douchegel. En de flacons zelf bestaan uit gerecycleerd plastic.
Ook een aanrader: de kleinere varianten van Rainpharma’s Aromatherapy Essentials -lijn en zijn gezichtsverzorging. Die koop je in geschenk- en promosets, maar het merk houdt deze zomer ook een écht interessante promoactie: wie vijf gezichtsproducten koopt, krijgt een stevige traveltas (die op de foto’s) met 6 travel-size producten. De no-nonsense formules zijn natuurlijk, veganistisch en worden in België gemaakt. (Wel opletten als je allergisch bent aan of snel reageert op essentiële oliën.)
Ook Beauty Kitchen stopte de bestsellers van zijn gamma natuurlijke verzorging in kleine potjes die makkelijk in je hand- of toilettas passen (en die je makkelijk kan navullen). Zoals het zuiverende, hydraterende Seahorse Plankton 5 Minute Miracle Mask (€ 3,99, bij Holland & Barrett) zodat je ook op vakantie van zondag maskerdag kan maken.
Mijn favoriete parfum stop ik in een navulbaar travelflesje dat je bij Ici Paris XL kan vinden. Of ik neem staaltjes mee van frisse geuren.
3. Keep it basic.
Ja, je kan je volledige skincareregime meenemen op reis (al dan niet in kleinere potjes), maar ik houd het op vakantie meestal basic: een reiniger op oliebasis, een hydraterend serum (ook handig bij airco of op het vliegtuig), zonnebescherming (!!!) en een hydraterende crème die zowel overdag als ‘s nachts kan (dus zonder spf). Je huid kan, als ze niet te veel problemen heeft, wel eventjes verder met enkel reiniging, zonnebescherming en voldoende hydratatie. Zeker zonder de stress en ijzig koude airconditioning-kantoren van je dagelijkse leven.
Deel basic, hydraterende formules als Ultra Facial Cream van Kiehl’s of Moisture Surge van Clinique ook gerust met je partner. Dat bespaart weer wat ruimte en de kans dat hij/zij allergisch reageert op deze formules is vrij klein. (Het kan altijd.)
Ik reis tegenwoordig met de Daily Repair Moisturizer en Antioxidant Booster van Bella Aura die je als onderdeel van de Discovery Kit (€ 50, via Beautywiseshop.be) koopt. Erg duur voor in totaal 50 ml product, ik weet het, maar deze twee parfumloze formules zitten vol antioxidanten, vitamines, peptiden en natuurlijke oliën die je huid helpen beschermen tegen vrije radicalen en haar goed gevoed houden. En ze ruiken heerlijk dankzij olie van bittere sinaasappelschil (wel geen aanrader als je niet tegen essentiële oliën kan). Bovendien doe je lang met 10 ml product. Ik heb de crèmes, alle tripjes bij elkaar opgeteld, al meer dan een week gebruikt en ze zijn nog niet eens halverwege.
4. Bigger is better in de zon.
Eén categorie waarvoor je beter niet op enkel travel-sizes vertrouwt (tenzij je er een héle grote stapel van meeneemt): zonnebescherming. Reken erop dat je met een heel gezin minstens één grote fles zonnecrème op gebruikt tijdens een weekje zon. Omdat je véél en vaak moet smeren. You would love to be able to go on holiday without all the packing stress the week/day/evening before you leave? These tips and products make sure you have everything you need in your rented bathroom.
Some people rely on a carefully constructed list, others just throw clothing and skincare in a suitcase the evening before they go on holiday. Some take half of their bathroom products with them, others keep it basic but discover they have forgotten the most important items when they arrive on their destination.
Going on a press trip quite regularly turned me into a – I think – pretty clever, minimalistic traveling woman. I like to keep things basic but make sure my skin and my fellow travellers’ have everything they need. I just stick to these four rules:
- Don’t forget to pack handy multitaskers.
You need at least one of these in your bathroom at home and on holiday and preferably also in your handbag: a cream or balm that helps tackle dry lips and cuticles, itchy patches, irritated skin, small wounds, mosquito bites… Avène’s fragrance-free Cicalfate cream is a classic and recently helped heal the cracked corners of my mouth. If you like your formulas petrolatum/mineral oil-free, you can go for an all natural formula like the fragrance-free Paw Paw Ointment by Sukin. Nine ingredients in total, like castor oil, carnauba wax and papaya extract, help soothe and nourish (dehydrated, cracked or sensitive) skin.
Another toiletry bag staple of mine is: Caudalie’s Grape Water: it refreshes on hot days but also calms skin when you have spent too much time in the sun for example.
Handy when traveling with (small) kids or at a festival where taking a shower is not a priority: Beauty Kitchen’s Free From Wish-a-Wash Wet Wipes (9,99 € for 20 wipes, at Holland & Barrett). I normally do not like cleansing wipes and will never advise using them as most of them do not cleanse your skin that thoroughly and they are not environment-friendly but these natural, fragrance-free wipes are compostable. (Bio-degradable is not good enough according to the natural skincare brand. It can take years before bio-degradable wipes are completely gone.) They come in handy while out and about to give dirty hands and faces a quick cleanse. (You can tear the wipes to make them smaller so you only use what you need.) After using, throw them in the compost.
2. Go for travel-size.
This is a no brainer, I know: travel-size products take up less space in your luggage and you can easily use them for a fortnight or longer. Keep sample sizes of your favourite products (ask for them at the check-out of your perfumery) or stock up on some mini’s a lot of beauty brands make of their bestsellers.
I have a large travel size shower products and skincare in our bathroom – let’s say we can go on holiday for a long, long time, only using those – but I also keep a refillable set of travel-sized jars and bottles I fill with my favourite, allergy-proof products.
If you want to take care of your skin as well as of the planet, Yves Rocher’s I love my Planet Concentrated Shampoo (3,95 €) and Concentrated Shower Gel (3,95 €) are great options. You can use the shampoo thirty washes, you take forty showers with the shower gel. (A bargain, at that price.) The formulas are short, good and sls-free. By putting the concentrated formulas in smaller bottles, the brand is saving 39% and 50% CO2 and plastic, respectively, compared to its regular bottle of shampoo and shower gel. (The bottles themselves are made of recycled plastic to boot.)
Also great to take with you on holiday: the smaller versions of Rainpharma’s Aromatherapy Essentials range and its skincare. You buy them as a gift or promotional set but the brand has an interesting promotion this summer: if you buy five skincare products, you get a sturdy travel bag (as seen in the pictures) with 6 travel-size products. The no-nonsense formulas are natural, vegan and are made in Belgium. (They are not for you if you are allergic to essential oils.)

3. Keep it basic.
Yes, you could just put your entire skincare routine in your toiletry bag – hopefully in smaller jars) but I like to keep it very basic on holiday: an oil cleanser, an hydrating serum (handy when there is AC everywhere or on the plane), sun protection (!!!) and a cream I can use during the day and at night (so without an spf).
And why not share good, basic hydrating formulas like Ultra Facial Cream by Kiehl’s or Clinique’s Moisture Surge with your partner?
Lately, I have been traveling with Bella Aura’s Daily Repair Moisturizer and Antioxidant Booster that are part of its Discovery Kit (€ 50, via Beautywiseshop.be). It is expensive for a total of 50 ml of skincare, I know, but these two fragrance-free formulas are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, peptides and natural oils that help protect your skin against free radicals and keep it nourished. And they smell lovely thanks to bitter orange peel oil (not a good idea if your skin does not like essential oils, though). A little goes a long way, too. I have been using both creams for up to a week now and they are still pretty full.
4. Bigger is better in the sunshine.
There is one important category where the travel size rule does not apply: sunscreen. (Unless you take a whole lot of travel sizes with you.) You should go through at least one large bottle of sunscreen with the family during a one week-holiday. Because you have to apply a lot of product and apply it often.
