Rimpels en pigmentvlekjes staan niet erg hoog op je verlanglijstje? Smeer dan trouw een spf op je gezicht. En niet alleen tijdens je strandvakantie…

Dat je in de zon zonnecrème smeert (veel en vaak) is nogal wiedes, maar ook op niet-zonnige dagen of wanneer je een hele dag op kantoor zit, komt een SPF goed van pas. UVA-stralen worden niet tegengehouden door glas en maar deels door bewolking: je huid veroudert dus ook als je achter het raam in de zon zit of op een bewolkte dag buiten loopt. (Check maar eens de foto van de Amerikaanse trucker William McElligott: de linkerhelft van zijn gezicht kreeg zijn hele chauffeurscarrière lang de volle laag toen hij zijn routes aflegde. De rechterhelft niet. Durf nu nog eens beweren dat de zon geen schade aanricht.)
Wil je je huid optimaal beschermen tegen veroudering door de zon, dan is jezelf overdag terugtrekken in een donkere ondergrondse grot in theorie een puik idee, in de praktijk gebruik je – net iets handiger – élke dag een SPF op je gezicht. Het hele jaar door.
Uitvluchten als “dat plakt” en “mijn make-up glijdt er na een uurtje af wanneer ik zonnebescherming smeer” kloppen trouwens niet. Toch niet met één van deze tien ‘nieuwkomers’.
Zonder parfum
Allergisch aan geurstoffen? Of je smeert liefst zo “clean” mogelijk en vermijdt overbodige ingrediënten? Aan deze twee producten werd geen parfum toegevoegd, maar dat maakt ze niet minder aangenaam om te smeren.
Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 25 van Cerave (€ 12,95, bij de apotheker)
Je bent op zoek naar een hydraterende dagcrème met de bonus van een SPF en je hebt een droge tot normale huid? Dan is deze formule met SPF 25 (vrij hoog voor een dagcrème) misschien iets voor jou. Net als alle andere formules van dit Amerikaanse merk is deze vrij van parfum en belooft ze de huidbarrière (opnieuw) gezond te maken/te houden dankzij een mix van ceramiden, hyaluronzuur, glycerine en vochtvasthoudende ingrediënten. Een erg degelijke formule aan een klein prijsje.
Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF35 van Glossier (€ 21,52)
Geen parfum, toch een lekker geurtje dankzij olie van zoete sinaasappelschil. Je voelt de gelachtige textuur niet zitten eens je haar hebt uitgesmeerd en make-up gaat er prima over. Een erg fijne, dagelijkse bescherming met een plus: antioxidanten als broccoli en vitamine E helpen schade door de zon en andere omgevingsfactoren beperken. Dit is mijn nieuwe favoriete dagelijkse zonbescherming. Alleen jammer dat je er niet zo makkelijk aan komt.
Een kleurtje én bescherming
Handig op hete dagen waarop je er een beetje presentabel wil uitzien, maar je huid voldoende wil beschermen: een getinte crème met een hoge SPF. Je kan deze als zonneproduct gebruiken, maar vergeet niet dat je om de twee uur of na elke zwembeurt en véél moet smeren, net als met een gewone zonnecrème. Smeer je minder dan de aanbevolen hoeveelheid, dan beschermen deze crèmes niet als een SPF50.
Sun Sensitive Delicate Fresh BB Cream SPF50 van Lancaster (€ 25,20)
De zonbeschermingsexpert lanceerde deze lente zijn eerste productlijn voor de zongevoelige huid en stopte er een BB cream in die zich aanpast aan je huidskleur. De crème zorgt meteen voor een gezonde, zomerse gloed, alsof je er al een licht zonnebad op hebt zitten. Laat je niet afschrikken door het donkere kleurtje, ik ben zelf ook niet de meest gebruinde persoon op onze planeet: de tint past zich echt aan je huid aan, maar maakt haar wel een tikje donkerder, alsof je door de zon bent gebruind.
De formule is niet parfumvrij, maar het parfum is wel aangepast aan de gevoelige huid en ruikt heerlijk naar vakantie. Ik heb er alvast niet op gereageerd, ondanks mijn linaloolallergie.
Een kennis met zonneallergie gebruikte de niet-getinte zonnecrème tijdens haar strandvakantie en had voor het eerst geen last van jeukende blaasjes in haar decolleté.
Lancaster zou Lancaster niet zijn als de formule niet, naast tegen UVA en UVB, ook tegen infrarood en zichtbaar licht beschermt.
Anthelios Ultra Getinte BB Zonnecrème SPF50+ van La Roche-Posay (€ 18, bij de apotheek)
Ook deze BB cream is geschikt voor de huid met neiging tot zonneallergie en voor de gevoelige huid. Het merk herwerkte zijn formules waardoor er nu 12 ingrediënten minder nodig zijn – lees: minder kans op allergische reacties – en de formule ook door gevoelige ogen wordt verdragen. De pigmenten passen zich aan je teint aan. Wel jammer dat het vijfde ingrediënt (uitdrogende) alcohol denat is. (In een kleine hoeveelheid schaadt deze alcohol de huid niet volgens Paula Begoun, de oprichtster van Paula’s Choice en een skincaregoeroe, maar ik kan uit de INCI-lijst niet afleiden hoeveel alcohol er exact in de formule zit.)
CC Cream SPF50 van Chanel (€ 62)
Het Franse huis herwerkte de formule van zijn CC Cream lichtjes omdat niet iedereen die even leuk smeren vond. (Veel mensen vonden de formule te dik, ik ben altijd fan geweest.) De nieuwe formule belooft nog meer hydratatie (met dank aan glycerine, hyaluronzuur en emolliënten) en een fijnere textuur die makkelijker in de huid smelt. Kiezen kan uit zes tinten, best veel voor een getinte crème, die goed dekken. Alleen jammer van dat prijskaartje, dat besef ik.
Zonnecrème met een plus
Deze formules beloven naast een hoge bescherming ook een anti-ageingextraatje en zijn een goede optie als je al wat last hebt van bruine vlekjes.
Soleil-Protect Anti-Brown Spot Unifying Fluid SPF50+ van RoC (€ 17,95, bij Di)
Naast een hoge bescherming belooft deze crème met vitamine C ook pigmentvlekken te verminderen. De vloeibare formule smeert makkelijk uit en is ook geschikt voor de gevoelige huid. (Er zit wel parfum in de formule.)
Foto Ultra Age Repair Fusion Water Texture SPF50 van ISDIN (€ 26,90, bij de apotheek)
Dit Spaanse merk is bij ons niet zo goed gekend en dat is jammer, want het is erg sterk in krachtige zonnebescherming die aangenaam voelt. Deze olievrije formule zou voor een heldere teint moeten zorgen, de natuurlijke collageenproductie boosten en de huid elastisch en goed gehydrateerd houden dankzij hyaluronzuur. Bovenop tegen de zon beschermen natuurlijk.
Nivea Sun Gezicht Anti-Age & Anti-Pigmentvlekken SPF50 van Nivea (€ 13,49)
Ook Nivea waagt zich dit seizoen aan zonbescherming voor het gezicht met lichte texturen die aangenaam smeren en goed onder make-up kunnen. Naast een matterende formule is er ook eentje die huidveroudering helpt tegengaan met een SPF30 of 50. Licochalcone A, een zoethoutwortelextract, werkt als antioxidant en gaat irritatie tegen. Antioxidant Co-enzym Q10 boost de aanmaak van nieuwe huidcellen. Het achtste ingrediënt op de INCI-lijst is wel alcohol denat. (Zie mijn opmerking bij de getinte crème van La Roche-Posay.)
Een vleugje luxe
Voor de zonneklopster die van strandgeurtjes houdt en voor wie geïntrigeerd is door nichemerken.
Terracotta Sun Protect Sun Moisturiser SPF30 van Guerlain (€ 43,50)
Guerlain houdt van de zon en van een bruin kleurtje en dus stopt het merk het Tan Booster-complex in zijn Terracotta Sun-lijn om het bruiningsproces te versnellen, maar het beschermt je huid ook tegen de zon én pollutie. Deze crème kan op gezicht en lichaam en ruikt naar een exotische strandvakantie. Een aanrader voor wie van de zon en een vleugje luxe houdt.
PRE:EMPT SERIES Daily Brightening Moisturizer SPF30 van Perricone MD (€ 62)
Het merk noemt het verzorging voor de millennial, maar dit is vooral een goede optie voor de normale tot vette huid die er wat dof uitziet. De minerale filter zinkoxide beschermt tegen de zon, het NRF2 Antioxidant Support Complex met waterkerskiemen, kurkuma, olijfblad en groene thee belooft de huidbarrière te versterken en watermeloenextract helpt vochtverlies minimaliseren. Mocht ik niet allergisch zijn aan verschillende bestanddelen in de formule, zou ik deze graag testen.

Wrinkles and brown spots are not part of your perfect skin wishlist? Using a sunscreen on your face helps postponing their appearance. And not just when you’re enjoying the beach…
Using sunscreen while out and about in the sun – and using it liberally and often – is as logical as Trump’s brain getting confused by double negatives. But a sunscreen comes in handy on cloudy days or when you are stuck in the office all day, too. UVA rays get through glass easily and are only partly blocked by clouds, meaning your skin does age when you are sitting behind a closed window or walking outside on a cloudy day. (Just check this picture of the American trucker William McElligott: the left half of his face absorbed UVA full on while he was driving around in his truck. The right half did not. Pretty horrifying, right?)
If you want to protect your skin against the harmful rays of the sun the best way you can, you could – in theory – go live in an underground cave during the day. In real life, using an SPF on your face every single day is a much more practical solution. Excuses like “it’s sticky” and “my make-up glides off when I apply a sunscreen first” do not apply for these ten newcomers. One (or more) of them might be a perfect match for your skin.
Fragrance-free
Allergic to fragrance? Or you just like to keep your skincare as “clean” as possible? These two products are fragrance-free but that does not mean they are not a treat to use.
Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 25, Cerave (12,95 €)
You like your hydrating day cream to come with an SPF and you have dry to normal skin? This lotion carries an SPF 25 – pretty high for a day cream. Like all other formulas of this American skincare brand it is fragrance-free and promises to strengthen the skin barrier with its mix of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ingredients that hold moisture in the skin. A very decent formula at a bargain price.
Glossier’s Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF35 (21,52 €)
Although the formula is fragrance-free, it smells nice thanks to sweet orange peel oil. The gel-like texture is very lightweight and perfect under make-up. This is just a very nice daily sunscreen with a plus to boot: antioxidants like broccoli and vitamin E help limit the damage the sun and other environmental factors cause.
Some colour and protection
A tinted cream with a high SPF comes in handy on hot days when you want to look a bit decent and protect your skin at the same time. You can use these products as a sunscreen, just make sure you reapply them every two hours or after a swim and apply them liberally, just like you would a non-tinted sunscreen. If you use less than the advised amount, you do not get the high level of protection an SPF 50 promises.
Lancaster’s Sun Sensitive Delicate Fresh BB Cream SPF50 (25,20 €)
The suncare expert launched its first range for sun sensitive skin this spring and added a BB cream that adapts to your skin tone. The cream gives your skin a healthy, sunny glow in no time. Do not be afraid of the rather dark colour: it really adapts to your skin – I am not the most tan person in the world – giving it the colour you would get after two days in the sun.
An acquaintance with a sun allergy used the non-tinted sunscreen of the range on her beach holiday and for the first time in her life, had no itchy red spots in her cleavage.
The formula is not fragrance-free but the added fragrance is adapted to sensitive skin. I did not react to it, even though I am allergic to linalool. (And it smells divine.)
Lancaster would not be Lancaster if the formula did not protect against uva, uvb, infrared and visible light.
Anthelios Ultra Tinted BB Suncream SPF50+, La Roche-Posay (18 €)
This BB cream is suited for skin with a tendency to sun allergy and for sensitive skin. The brand reworked its formulas so it needs 12 ingredients less than before – less ingredients equals less chance of allergic reactions – and it is suited for sensitive eyes, too. The pigments adapt to your skin tone. A pity, though, that the fifth ingredient on the INCI list is (drying) alcohol denat. (A small amount of this alcohol is okay according to Paula Begoun, the founder of Paula’s Choice and skincare guru who avoids it altogether in her formulas. I cannot derive from the INCI list how much alcohol the formula exactly carries.)
CC Cream SPF50, Chanel (62 €)
The French luxury brand reworked its CC Cream formula slightly as not everyone liked using it. (Many people found it too thick to apply and blend, I have always liked it.) Its new formula promises more hydration (thanks to glycerin, hyaluronic acid and emollients) and a ligher texture that melts into skin more easily. You can choose between six shades – that’s a pretty broad range for a tinted cream – with a good coverage. Just a pity it is pretty expensive.
Sunscreen with a plus
These formulas not only promise to protect, they also carry ingredients that help keep skin young. If you are worried about brown spots or already have them, these might help. (Just like keeping out of the sun.)
Soleil-Protect Anti-Brown Spot Unifying Fluid SPF50+, RoC (17,95 €, at Di)
Next to a high protection – very important if pigmentation spots are a skin issue – this cream with vitamin C also promises to diminish brown spots. The fluid formula spreads easily and is suitable for sensitive skin, too. (It contains fragrance though.)
Foto Ultra Age Repair Fusion Water Texture SPF50, ISDIN (26,90 €)
This Spanish brand might not be that well-known outside the country’s borders but it is good in creating high sunscreen protection that is a treat to use. This oil-free formula is supposed to clarify your skin tone, boost the natural collagen production and keep skin elastic and well hydrated thanks to hyaluronic acid.
Nivea Sun Face Anti-Age & Anti-Pigmentspots (13,49 €)
Nivea got into the sunscreen for the face department this spring with light textures that are easy to apply and work well under make-up. There is a mattifying formula and this anti-ageing one. Licochalcone A, an extract from licorice root, works as an antioxidant and prevents skin irritation. Antioxidant Co-enzym Q10 boosts the production of new skin cells. (The eighth ingredient on the INCI list is alcohol denat but I am guessing the total percentage is not that large that it will dry out skin.)
A bit of luxury
Perfect if you love, love, love the sun and holiday vibes or if you are into niche skincare.
Terracotta Sun Protect Sun Moisturiser SPF30, Guerlain (43,50 €)
Guerlain loves the sun and a tan so it put the Tan Booster complex in its Terracotta Sun range to speed up the tanning proces. But the brand keeps skin protected against the sun and pollution, too. You can use this cream on both face and body and the smell takes you to a tropical beach even when you are not on one.
PRE:EMPT SERIES Daily Brightening Moisturizer SPF30, Perricone MD (62 €)
The brand created the PRE:EMPT SERIES range for millennials but this cream is a good one if you have normal to oily skin that looks a bit dull. Zinc oxide protects against the sun, the NRF2 Antioxidant Support Complex with watercress sprouts, curcuma, olive leaf and green tea promises to make the skin barrier stronger, watermelon extract helps minimize moisture loss. I would have loved to test this formula but cannot as it contains several ingredients I am allergic to.
