7 fragrance-free lipsticks to get you through the week

Een parfumallergie hoeft niet het einde van je rode lippen te betekenen. Deze lipsticks zijn vrij van parfum, maar boeten niet in aan kleur en/of houdbaarheid.

De dermatoloog en de jeukende vlek na de patchtest op je rug zijn het erover eens: je bent allergisch aan parfum in cosmetica. (In mijn geval aan linalool, een bestanddeel dat je in essentiële oliën vindt, maar dat ook in parfum wordt gebruikt.) Gevolg: je mag van de ene op de andere dag geen geparfumeerde producten meer op je huid smeren. En dan pas besef je dat parfum in véél cosmeticaproducten zit: douchegel, shampoo, bodylotion, dagcrème, cleansers, foundation en je favoriete lipstick.

Het doet pijn om van je hart een steen te maken en die laatste te moeten weggooien. Ik stopte mijn favorieten van Tom Ford in een mooi make-uptasje en borg het onderin mijn beautykast op, voor het geval mijn lippen op een dag op miraculeuze wijze wél parfum zouden verdragen, maar gooide de inhoud na een jaar – toen ik er mentaal klaar voor was – uiteindelijk toch weg. Een huidallergie geneest niet, verzekerde mijn dermatoloog me. Het kan op een dag lijken alsof je huid opnieuw parfum/lanoline/glucosiden/waaraan je ook allergisch bent tolereert, maar uiteindelijk hervalt ze.

Helemaal vermijden is dus de boodschap. Check de ingrediëntenlijst van al je producten. Zit er parfum in, gooi het dan weg of maak er een zus/vriendin/je moeder blij mee.

Na uitgebreide research en een Marie Kondo-waardige opruimactie in mijn make-uplade, weet ik dat deze formules vrij zijn van parfum. En dat ze evenmin aroma of flavor bevatten, wat je kan vergelijken met parfum en dus ook maar beter vermijdt. Er zit ook geen (ethyl) vanillin in dat producten naar vanille doet geuren en je waarschijnlijk ook beter vermijdt als je allergisch bent voor parfum. Ik ruilde mijn favoriete Tom Fordlipsticks, Color Riches van L’Oréal Paris en Lip Pops van Clinique (waarin geen parfum zit, maar wel lanoline waaraan ik ook allergisch ben) in voor deze lipsticks met opvallend veel liquid texturen die lang blijven zitten. En geen paniek: er hangt helemaal geen raar geurtje aan, waardoor je je kan afvragen of het wel zo noodzakelijk is om parfum in lipstick te stoppen.

Lip & Cheek van Fralippolippie (€ 17,50)

Deze vegan, natuurlijke crème met koolzaad-, zoete amandel- en ricinusolie gebruik je op lippen of wangen voor een gezond kleurtje. De kleur houdt op mijn lippen geen hele dag, maar vervaagt zachtjes. Leuk om weten: je kan oprichtster Monique ook vragen je favoriete lipsticktint  – ik zeg maar wat: Lady Danger van M.A.C – na te maken in een vegan, geurloze formule.

PureMoist Lipstick in Gwen van Jane Iredale (€ 25)

Heel mooi gepigmenteerd en ze glijdt boterzacht over de lippen, deze felrode lipstick van het minerale make-upmerk. Een blend van natuurlijke boters, oliën en fruitextracten belooft verzorging en bescherming tegen vrije radicalen. Opgelet: er zit citrusschilolie in de formule, die zorgt voor een lekker geurtje, maar je kan er eventueel op reageren.

Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur in n° 17 A la rosée van Chanel (€ 36)

In tegenstelling tot alle andere lipsticks en glossjes van het huis bevat dit jumbopotlood géén parfum. De crèmige textuur zorgt voor verzorging, glans en veel kleur en blijft tot vier uur zitten. Niet zo lang als de andere lipsticks van het huis, maar je hoort mij niet klagen.

Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Cream in 436 Birthday Suit van Sleek (€ 7,49, bij Di)

De eerste in de reeks geurloze, matte liquid lipsticks met een siliconenbasis is meteen ook de goedkoopste. Vermijd deze formule als je lippen droog zijn, want ze zet droge velletjes extra in de kijker en is niet meteen voedend te noemen. Heb je geen last van droge lippen, dan is dit een goede budgetoptie als je van een volle, matte kleur met een lange houdbaarheid houdt.

Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Foiled Again van NYX (€ 8,45)

Deze liquid lipstick komt in 24 kleurtjes, van nude, rood en roze over koraal tot zwart, groen en blauw, voelt aangenaam op de lippen en houdt lang. Houd je niet van petrolatum, vermijd dan deze formule.

Goed om weten bij dit soort liquid lipsticks: je wrijft je lippen best niet over elkaar zoals met traditionele formules omdat je op die manier soms een oneffen resultaat kan krijgen. Aanbrengen, eventueel wat uitwrijven met je vinger, laten opdrogen en klaar.

Vice Liquid Lipstick in Crimson van Urban Decay (€ 30, bij Ici Paris XL of via Urban Decay)

Urban Decay doet nog beter dan NYX Cosmetics met een pallet van 36 kleuren en de keuze tussen een matte of metallic finish. De formule belooft de lippen niet uit te drogen en te blijven zitten tot jij de lipstick eraf haalt. Dat laatste vind ik niet: bijwerken na een kopje koffie of je lunch is (in mijn geval) vereist, maar de formule blijft wel lang zitten als je niet eet of drinkt.

Lip Maestro Lip Vibes in 519 Pink van Giorgio Armani (€ 33,90)

Armani was één van de eersten om dit soort formule uit te brengen en is wat mij betreft nog steeds één van de beste. De kleuren zijn rijk gepigmenteerd, de formule voelt comfortabel aan en blijft érg lang zitten.

You’re allergic to perfume? That does not mean you have to give up on your signature red lip. These lipsticks are free from fragrance, are full of rich pigment and/or survive a cop of coffee.

Your dermatologist and the itchy patch of skin on your back – the result of an allergy patch test – agree: you are allergic to fragrance in cosmetics. Meaning: you can no longer use anything fragranced on your skin. Turns out a whole lot of cosmetics carry fragrance: shower gel, shampoo, bodylotion, day cream, cleansers but also make-up products like foundation and lipstick.

As someone with a linalool allergy I can assure you: it hurts to throw away your favourite lipsticks. I put my precious Tom Ford lipsticks in a pretty make-up bag and buried it deep in my make-up drawer, just in case my lips would miraculously accept fragrance one day. Which they will never ever do. (So I eventually threw them away after a year, when I was mentally ready to do so.) Once your skin has developed an allergy it will stay allergic to that particular ingredient for the rest of your life, my dermatologist assured me. It might seem that after a couple of months of avoiding the ingredient your skin seems to accept it but it will eventually react again.

Avoiding what you are allergic to is the only solution. Check the INCI list of every single cosmetics product you own. If it contains fragrance, toss it away or make a friend/sister/mother happy.

After a lot of research and a toss-away session Marie Kondo would be proud of, I stick to these fragrance-free formulas. They do not contain flavor/aroma or (ethyl) vanillin either, which can still cause a reaction if you are allergic to fragrance. I swapped my favourite lipsticks from Tom Ford, Color Riche from L’Oréal Paris and Clinique’s Lip Pops (no fragrance in those but I am allergic to lanoline, too) for these lippies. And do not panic: they do not smell weird, making you wonder whether it is really necessary to add fragrance to any lipstick at all.

Lip & Cheek, Fralippolippie (17,50 €)

This vegan, natural cream with sweet almond and castor oil can be used on both lips and cheeks and is made by hand by Dutchie Monique who now lives in Berlin. I like this pink but it does not stay put a very long time on my lips. Good to know: you can ask her to turn your favourite lipstick hue – say M.A.C’s Lady Danger – into a vegan, fragrance-free formula.

PureMoist Lipstick in Gwen, Jane Iredale (25 €)

Very well pigmented and a very pretty red. A blend of natural butters, oils and fruit extracts promises to nourish and protect against free radicals. It glides like butter over lips. Warning: the formula contains citrus oil, which gives it a nice aroma but it can lead to an allergic reaction.

Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur in n° 17 A la rosée, Chanel (36 €)

After having to throw away my Chanel lipstick collection, I was extremely happy to discover the brand did not put fragrance in this jumbo pencil. Its creamy texture promises to nourish and gives lips a lot of shiny colour. It stays put up to four hours. I do not like it as much as the regular lipsticks of the brand but beggars cannot be choosers so I am not complaining.

Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Cream in 436 Birthday Suit, Sleek (7,49 €)

The first of my list of fragrance free, matte liquid lipsticks with a silicone base and the cheapest. Do not use this formula if you have dry lips as it tends to draw attention to flaky lips. It is not very nourishing either. If your lips are well hydrated, this is a good budget option if you like matte colours and long-wear.

Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Foiled Again, NYX (8,45 €)

This liquid lipstick comes in 24 colours, from nudes, reds and pinks over corals to black, blues and greens. If you do not like to put petrolatum on your skin, this formula wasn’t made for you.

Good to know with this kind of liquid formula: do not rub your lips together after applying the colour like you would with a traditional lipstick. It can lead to a dodgy result. Apply a layer of colour, maybe smudge it a bit with your pinkie, let it dry and done.

Vice Liquid Lipstick in Crimson van Urban Decay (30 €)

Urban Decay does even better than NYX Cosmetics with 36 colours and a matte or metallic finish. The formula promises to not dry out lips and to stay put until you decide it is time to take it off. I do not think it stays put that well after a cup of coffee or lunch but it does stay pretty if you do not eat or drink.

Lip Maestro Lip Vibes in 519 Pink, Giorgio Armani (33,90 €)

Armani was one of the first to launch this kind of formula and in my opinion one of the best. The colours are rich and richly pigmented, the formula feels comfortable and stays put a long, long time.
