Is the Dyson Airwrap worth the splurge?

Op social media is de Airwrap van Dyson een hype, maar is de haarstyler van net geen 500 euro zijn geld waard? Ik testte het toestel uitgebreid uit.

Toen Dyson twee jaar geleden de Supersonic lanceerde, een hightech haardroger die op een lagere temperatuur veel sneller en stiller haar droogt dan zijn soortgenoten, stond de beautywereld een klein beetje versteld. (De kopieën bleven dan ook niet uit.) Wat mij betreft is de Supersonic nog steeds de beste föhn die ik ooit gebruikte en ik ben in het bezit van het allereerste model dat intussen al verbeterd is.

De verwachtingen voor de tweede beautylancering van Dyson lagen dan ook hoog. Ik gokte op een stijltang, toen ik in september werd uitgenodigd in het salon van Dysonambassadeur Toni Kalin in Antwerpen om in avant-première de Airwrap te ontdekken. Maar nee,  de producent van zakloze stofzuigers stopte heel veel tijd (zes jaar ontwikkeling) en research (642 prototypes) in een toestel dat alle soorten styling verenigt: van een gladde brushing over volume tot krullen en golven.

Het toestel komt met zes opzetstukken in de complete box: een pre-styling dryer om natte lokken 80% droog te blazen, zodat ze de ideale vochtigheid hebben om te worden gestyled, een soft smoothing brush voor fijn haar, een firm smoothing brush voor dik haar, een round volumising brush om haar extra volume te geven op de kruin en twee formaten Airwrap-barrels, eentje van 30 mm en eentje van 40 mm om golven en krullen te creëren.

Net als de Supersonic werkt de Airwrap zonder extreme hitte, controleert hij constant de temperatuur en is hij dus een stuk liever voor je lokken dan traditionele haarstylers. (Je beschadigt je haar dus een stuk minder.) Ook hij werkt dankzij de lichte, krachtige V9-motor. Het revolutionaire aan dit toestel is dat het werkt volgens het Coanda-effect. Dat treedt volgens het persbericht op “wanneer een luchtstroom met hoge snelheid naar een oppervlak geleid wordt en de luchtstroming als gevolg van verschil in druk zich aan het oppervlak hecht.” Ik zie het effect – heel primitief – als een mini-tornado die je lokken rond het krulopzetstuk zuigt en zo in een spiraal krult. Het helpt ook om het haar glad en droog te maken of te drogen en volume te geven zonder extreme hitte.

Héél technisch en high-tech allemaal, maar de belangrijkste vraag blijft natuurlijk: werkt het toestel ook goed? Mijn (erg persoonlijke) antwoord: ja en nee. Ik vind de Airwrap als hair style dummy erg handig en snel. Je hebt maar één hand nodig om je haar letterlijk glad en droog te borstelen. Dat kan iedereen.

Ik gebruik de soft smoothing brush omdat ik geen dik, onhandelbaar haar heb. (Een beetje jammer dus dat er een borstel in de luxueuze bewaardoos zit die ik nooit zal gebruiken.) Die maakt mijn haar heel erg zacht en heel erg steil. Jammer genoeg blijft mijn haar niet zo lang mooi glad en naar binnen gekruld als wanneer ik het glad strijk met de Steampod van L’Oréal Professionnel en Rowenta, nog altijd mijn favoriete stijltang. Het voordeel van deze borstel is wel dat die tegelijkertijd droogt en glad maakt en je dus iets minder tijd verliest dan wanneer je eerst je haar volledig moet (laten) drogen voor je er met een stijltang over gaat.

Ik vind de volumeborstel persoonlijk moeilijk werken om volume op mijn kruin te creëren en mijn haar is niet zo glad als met de borstel, maar dat ligt aan mij. Je kan deze borstel het best vergelijken met de dikke ronde borstels met harde haartjes die kappers gebruiken om je haar te drogen. Die vind ik simpelweg niet het makkelijkst om mee te werken. (Bonus aan dit toestel is dat je maar één arm nodig hebt.)

De pre-styling dryer – die je niet met een traditionele föhn kan vergelijken, want je stylet je haar er niet mee – droogt je haar snel zodat je met de andere opzetstukken aan de slag kan. Ik gebruik hem niet vaak, tenzij ik echt geen tijd heb. Ik laat mijn haar gewoonlijk aan de lucht drogen en als het bijna droog is, style ik het.

En dan zijn er de Airwrap-barrels, wat mij betreft de paradepaardjes van het toestel. Je hebt er twee van elke grootte die elk een andere richting uit blazen, zodat je elke haarhelft in de juiste richting kan krullen. Het mooist zijn krullen die van je gezicht weg worden gezet, verzekerde Toni Kalin me. In het begin was ik wat in de war over welke richting ik voor welke helft moest gebruiken. (Haarstilistdummie, weet je nog?) Maar als je het toestel in de spiegel bekijkt en de pijlrichting van de barrels volgt, zit je goed.

Ik blijf elke keer onder de indruk van het Coanda-effect. Je houdt een lok vast, brengt die in de richting van de barrel en hoppa, het haar krult zich errond alsof het magie is. Alleen trekt de barrel geen supergrote lokken aan en mag je haar niet te nat zijn of er gebeurt niets. Ik blijf het moeilijk vinden in te schatten wanneer mijn haar voor 80% droog is. Bovendien droogt mijn haar niet gelijkmatig: achteraan gaat het een stuk trager. Toen ik mijn haar nog met een shampoo bar waste en het naar mijn gevoel vet en zwaar aanvoelde, moest ik de barrel bij 3/5 van de lokken een handje helpen en plukken haar errond wikkelen. Nu ik het opnieuw met shampoo was, gaat het een stuk beter, hoewel sommige lokken, die waarschijnlijk wat natter zijn, moeilijk te vangen blijven.

Eens er een lok rond de barrel zit, laat je die drogen (het toestel voelt warm aan, maar niet branderig warm) en druk je de cool shot-knop in om met koude lucht de krul te fixeren. Dan het toestel uitzetten, de barrel uit de lok halen en tadaah: je hebt een (pijpen)krul die je wat losser kan maken of zo laat zitten, afhankelijk van de stijl die je wil. Voor iemand als ik die nog nooit met een gewone krultang heeft gewerkt uit angst haar vingers/hoofdhuid/haar te verbranden en omdat ze niet zo’n geweldige haarstylist is, blijft dit een (vrij) snelle en vooral makkelijke manier om krullen te creëren.

Alleen zijn het bij mij eerder losse golven onderaan, geen Julia Roberts-krullen over mijn hele kruin, en blijven ze niet goed zitten. Na een uur zijn ze helemaal uitgezakt, maar mijn haar valt dan wel glad en goed. Omdat ik allergisch ben aan haarlak en stylingproducten met linalool (99,5% van alle producten dus), kan ik die niet inschakelen om de krul te helpen vasthouden. Een parfumloze spray voor beach waves hielp niet. Wel belangrijk om weten: de paar keer dat een kapper mijn haar met een krultang krulde, bleven die krullen ook geen hele dag zitten. Het beste krulresultaat krijg ik als ik mijn natte lokken op pin curls draai, daarmee ga slapen en ze de volgende ochtend losmaak.

Veel hangt af van je haartype en haarlengte. Een collega beautyjournalist met korter, iets dunner haar dan ik is grote fan: bij haar blijven de krullen drie dagen zitten. Ook een kennis met heel veel haar vindt het toestel geweldig. Ik bekeek een aantal YouTube-reviews waarin meisjes met lang haar na een dag nog steeds een mooie wave hadden.  (Het was wel niet duidelijk of Dyson voor die reviews betaald heeft of niet, wat de eerlijkheid van de review zou kunnen beïnvloeden.) Andere collega’s vertelden me dat ook zij geen langhoudende krullen creëren. Dat het toestel geen hoge temperaturen gebruikt kan er misschien ook voor iets tussenzitten. En misschien zijn mijn krullen nooit helemaal droog, maar denk ik dat maar. (Volgens Kalin moeten zeker de wortels goed droog zijn omdat krullen anders sneller uitzakken.)

Ik wilde de Airwrap even fantastisch vinden als de Supersonic. Maar de Steampod maakt mijn haar net iets gladder en iets meer pluisvrij en doet dat voor langere tijd. De barrels creëren snel en op indrukwekkende manier krullen, maar die blijven bij mij niet zitten. En de volumeborstel ga ik waarschijnlijk niet gebruiken.

Mijn advies: ben je geïnteresseerd in de Airwrap, ga hem dan eerst testen. (Toen ik onlangs bij Hudson’s Bay in Amsterdam was, kon je het toestel daar gratis proberen.) En ontdek dan of de krullen blijven zitten of niet.

Stiekem hoop ik ook dat Dyson binnenkort met een goedkopere versie komt waarin enkel de barrels zitten omdat ik gok dat mensen vooral daarvoor willen investeren in de Airwrap. (Voor 50 euro minder kan je alvast een set kopen met vier opzetstukken in plaats van alle zes.) En hoop ik dat Dyson nog even checkt waarom de krullen niet bij iedereen blijven zitten, dat probleem oplost en een topproduct ontwikkeld heeft.

Pluspunten:

• De lage temperatuur betekent minder schade aan je haar.
• Het toestel is erg makkelijk in gebruik, ook voor hair style dummies.
• De opzetstukken raken niet oververhit, je kan je dus niet verbranden.

Iets minder leuk:

• het prijskaartje: € 499 blijft véél geld, ook al spaar je er een stijltang (ik raad de Steampod aan, die tussen € 199 en € 229 kost) en krultang (de StyleCare Prestige van Philips zou een goede zijn volgens een beautycollega en kost € 119,99) mee uit.
• De styling blijft niet zitten. De krullen zakken in mijn geval erg snel uit en bij een blowout krullen mijn punten snel naar buiten en is mijn haar niet zo pluisvrij als met de Steampod.
• De cool shot wordt niet heel snel koel.

Dyson’s Airwrap is a hype on social media but is the hair styler that costs nearly 500 € worth the splurge? I put it to the test.

When Dyson launched the Supersonic two years ago – the hightech hair dryer that works on a lower temperature and dries hair quicker and less noisy than traditional ones – it kind of blew the beauty world away. (Nowadays, a lot of brands seem to have similar dryers.) I still think the Supersonic is the best hair dryer out there and I have only been using the first model, which has been improved in the meantime.

So expectations were high when Dyson announced it was launching a second beauty tool. I thought I would discover a clever straightener when I was invited to Toni Kalin’s salon in Antwerp in September to discover the appliance in avant première. But no, the producer of fancy vacuum cleaners had put a lot of time – six years of development – and research – it took 642 prototypes – to create the Airwrap, a hairstyling tool that combines all sorts of styling: a smooth brushing, extra volume, curls and waves.

The tool comes with six attachments in the complete box set: the pre-styling dryer to dry wet hair for 80% so it has the ideal humidity to be styled, a soft smoothing brush for fine hair, a firm smoothing brush for thick hair, a round volumising brush to create volume and a 30 mm and 40 mm Airwrap barrel to create waves and curls.

Just like the Supersonic the Airwrap does not need extreme heat to style hair and it checks the temperature constantly, so it is a lot less damaging than traditional hair stylers. It also works on the light but very powerful V9 motor. What makes the Airwrap revolutionary is that it works with the Coanda effect. According to the press release, “the Coanda effect is an aerodynamic phenomenon. Air, when propelled at the right speed and pressure, naturally follows an adjacent surface, entraining surrounding air. The Dyson Airwrap styler creates a spinning vortex of air around the barrel that attracts, wraps and curls hair.”

I imagine the effect to be like a mini tornado that sucks hair around the barrel and curls it that way. It also helps to make hair smooth and dry or to add some volume while drying the hair without needing extreme heat to do so.

That’s all very technical and high tech but the most important question remains: is the appliance worth the investment? My very personal answer: yes and no. I think the Airwrap is great if you are a hair style dummy as it works quick and easy. You only need one hand to literally comb your hair smooth and dry. Pretty dummy proof.

I use the soft smoothing brush as I do not have thick, hard to style hair. (It is a bit of a pity that I will never use the hard smoothing brush.) My hair feels incredibly soft and is straight after using the brush. Unfortunately, my hair does not stay as smooth and straight with the ends curled inwards as when I use L’Oréal Professionnel and Rowenta’s Steampod, my favourite straigthener. On the other hand, the brush works quicker as it dries and straightens at the same time.

I find it hard to use the volume brush to create volume on top of my head and my hair does not get as smooth as with the smoothing brush but that is pretty much me being a bit clumsy when it comes to styling my hair. You could compare the volume brush with the kind hairdressers use when styling your hair, the thick round brushes with hard bristles. The good thing about the Airwrap is you only need one arm but I still find it hard with this kind of brush.

I do not really use the pre-styling dryer unless I do not have the time to let my hair air dry. But it does the job quickly. You cannot compare it to a traditional hair dryer as you do not use it to style your hair, you simply use it to make it the right kind of damp so you can start styling it with the other attachments.

And then there are the Airwrap barrels, which to me are the reason you buy the styler. You get two of each size that both blow in a different direction so you can curl each half of your head the right way. You get the best result when you curl away from your face, Toni Kalin told me. The first time I used them I was a bit confused of the right direction to use. The trick: look in the mirror and follow the direction of the arrows. (I am a hair styling dummy, remember?)

I am still pleasantly surprised by the Coanda effect. You hold a lock of hair, hold the barrel next to it and it magically wraps hair around itself. Good to know, especially if you have loads of hair: the barrel does not wrap big strands of hair around itself and your locks should be pretty dry or nothing happens at all. I still find it hard to know when my hair is 80% dry and ready to style. Plus, my locks do not dry simultaneously: the hair in the nape of my neck stays wet a lot longer than at the sides of my head.

I started using the Airwrap when I was still doing my shampoo bar experiment that made my hair feel greasy and heavy. I had to help most of my locks and wrap them around the barrel as they seemed to be too heavy for the Coanda effect to get hold of them. I have been washing my hair with regular shampoo lately and that seems to work a lot better even though some locks that are probably a bit wetter still need a helping hand.

Once the hair is wrapped around the barrel, you let it dry – the barrel feels hot but not scorchingly hot – and you then use the cool shot button to set the curl with cool air. Turn off the device, take the barrel out of the hair and look: you have created a curl. I have never ever used a curling tong before out of fear to burn my fingers/scalp/hair and because I am not that great at styling my hair: so to me, this is a (pretty) easy and quick way, once you get the hang of it to curl your hair.

But there is a but: I do not get Julia Roberts curls all over, more a sort of loose waves at the ends of my hair and they do not stay put. They have disappeared completely after an hour, resulting in hair that looks polished and smooth. I cannot use any hairspray or styling products to help set the curls as I am allergic to 99,5% of them (they all contain linalool). And a fragrance free beach waves spray did not help. But I also want to make clear that whenever a hairdresser tongs my hair, those curls do not stay put all day long either. I get the best curls when I twist wet locks into pin curls, sleep with them and undo them the next morning.

So a lot depends on your hair type (and length). A colleague beauty editor with shorter, slightly thinner hair than mine is a big fan of the Airwrap: she can keep her hair curly for three days. So is an acquaintance who has a lot of hair. I also saw some reviews on YouTube (that might have been paid for by Dyson, that was not made clear) in which long-haired girls started out with curls and still hade waves at the end of the day. Other beauty editors told me they cannot keep their curls to stay put either. I think the low temperature used might be another explanation as traditional curling tongs use high heat to create a curl. Plus, I am not completely sure whether my hair is 100% dry before I turn on the cool shot. Kalin told me the roots of the hair should be completely dry if you want to keep curls for a long(er) time.

I wanted to love the Airwarp just as mush as I love the Supersonic. But the Steampod makes my hair smoother and more frizz-free and keeps it that way for a longer time than the soft smoothing brush. The barrels create curls in a quick and impressive way but do not stay put. And I will probably not use the volume brush. So would I pay nearly 500 euro for the Airwrap? No. A good styling brush and the Supersonic will give you smooth, voluminous locks. And a good straightener makes your locks 170°C smooth in two goes.

My advice: if you are interested in buying, go out and test it first. (I was at Hudson’s Bay in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, where you could test the Airwrap.) So you can discover whether curls stay put or not.

I secretly hope Dyson comes with a cheaper version in the future that only contains the barrels as I guess they are the reason many people want to make the investment. (You can already buy a set with four instead of six attachments.) If Dyson checks why curls do not stay put in every hair type and solves that problem, it has a great product in hands.

Great:

• The lower temperature equals less damage to your hair.
• The appliance is easy to use, even for hair style dummies.
• The attachments do not get overheated so you do not get burned.

Not so great:

• the price tag: 499 € is a lot of money, eventhough you save investing in a straightener – I like the Steampod that costs between 199 € and 229 €) and curling tongs (Philips’ StyleCare Prestige is supposed to be a good one according to a beauty colleague and costs 119,99 €).
• The styling does not stay put. The curls disappear pretty quickly in my case and the end of my smooth blowout quickly curl outwards and the result is not as frizz-free as with the Steampod.
• The cool shot does not get that cool.
